The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. Let’s break down Bolinas Jetty over the next couple of weeks.
Right out of the gate, I’ll level with you – it’s a long, slow stretch of mostly just okay surf. The water’s at 58°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a little silver lining if you’re gonna paddle out.
The first real bright spot is Wednesday morning, July 15th. We’ve got a clean 5 ft swell from the WNW with a light cross-offshore breeze. The combined wave energy is moderate (432), and it’s the cleanest window we’ll see for a few days. The swell period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but for a break this friendly to beginners, it’ll be a fun little session.
Thursday morning, July 16th, is the next highlight. The swell builds to 6 ft from the WNW, with clean cross-offshore winds. Energy is climbing into the moderate range (723). That’s starting to get a bit stout for the newbies, but for the more experienced, it’ll offer some decent little walls. The afternoon gets bigger (8 ft) and windier, so that’s for the advanced crew only.
After that, we hit a real dry spell. From Friday the 17th through the end of the month, the surf drops off hard. We’re talking knee-high mush, mostly cross-onshore, and the scores are low. The period jumps up to 15-17 seconds for a few days, but the swell size is tiny (2 ft or less), so it’s just a long-period ripple. For a spot that’s usually fairly consistent, this is a real bummer, but it won’t stay this way forever.
Looking way out, Sunday morning, July 26th, shows some promise. The swell picks up to 6 ft from the WNW, with a moderate energy reading of 1121. The wind is light and cross-shore, keeping things clean. That’s a solid wave for a Sunday, but it’s a week and a half out, so take it with a grain of salt.
Monday morning, July 27th, is another decent call with 5 ft WNW swell and clean cross-offshore winds. Again, a long-range look, so it’s a promising maybe.
If you’re aiming for the best, hit Wednesday morning July 15th or Thursday morning July 16th. The rest of the time, you’ll be staring at flat water. Hang tight, it’ll come back.
Rusty.
