Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming up for Bolinas. Gotta be straight with you—this stretch is looking pretty lackluster for a while. The first week is a real grind of tiny, weak, or messy waves. There are glimmers of something more interesting later on, but you’ll have to be patient.
The water is sitting at about 58°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a small comfort.
We kick off on Saturday the 4th of July with a poor outlook. The morning shows a weak 3 ft swell from the WNW with a short period of 8 seconds and weak energy (286). There's a light onshore breeze, and conditions are poor. Afternoon drops to a tiny 2 ft from the SW, even though the period jumps to 19 seconds—that’s a long-period groundswell, but it’s just too small to do anything with. Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th stay poor to marginal with tiny 2 ft to 3 ft SW swells and cross or cross-on winds. Not worth suiting up.
Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th bring a slight rumble of energy with combined energy values climbing into the 700s and 800s, but the swell remains small—2 ft to 3 ft—and the wind is mostly cross or cross-off. It’s still marginal surf at best. The real tease comes Thursday the 9th of July. For the morning, the swell jumps to 7 ft from the WNW with a short period of 9 seconds, and energy is strong at 1336. The wind is clean and cross-off from the NW. This is the biggest, cleanest surf of the whole period, but heads up—at 7 ft, it’s probably too big for beginners and pushing into the realm of intermediate to advanced surfers. Unfortunately, the afternoon gets even bigger at 8 ft, but the period drops to 8 seconds and it looks a bit raw considering the size and short period combo.
Friday the 10th of July morning is your best bet if the big Thursday morning isn't your thing. Clean, cross-off wind from the WNW with a 6 ft swell from the WNW, period around 8 seconds, and moderate energy (713). It’s the only session in the first 10 days that rates "very good." But after that, the weekend of the 11th and 12th drops back into marginal, choppy territory.
We then hit a rough patch from Sunday afternoon the 12th through Wednesday the 15th—lots of onshore and cross-on wind, and the swell hovers around 4 ft to 6 ft but the quality is poor. The energy levels are moderate but the wind ruins it. Then, Thursday the 16th of July morning brings in a surprise: a clean 2 ft swell from the west with a very long 19-second period, and solid energy (619). It’s small, but those long gaps and clean conditions could make for some fun, lined-up waves on a point or reef if you know where to look. Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th trails off again with tiny, weak swells and clean but mostly cross-off wind. The energy drops steadily, and by the final weekend, it’s all below 2 ft.
If there’s a standout here, it’s the Thursday the 9th morning session. Big, clean, and good energy, but respect the size. Friday the 10th morning is the other real moment—clean, solid, and more manageable. The rest is mostly skunk territory.
Rusty, signing out.
