The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Stinson Beach has cookin’ for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook is pretty grim for most of this run. The water is sitting at 62°F, which is about 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real oddball, feels more like a late summer bathtub than the usual chilly Pacific.
We’re looking at a long, frustrating stretch here. From today, Monday the 17th, right through to the morning of Monday the 31st of August, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. That’s nearly two weeks of poor surf conditions. Winds are mostly cross-onshore and choppy, and when they do go offshore, the swell is tiny. The break is fairly consistent, but the quality just isn't there. Even the morning of Sunday the 30th of August has clean-ish conditions with very light winds (swell energy at 714), but the 3ft SW groundswell with a super long 16-second period means it’ll be pretty straight and flat at a beach break like this – better for a point, not so much here.
After that long dry spell, there's finally something to talk about. On Monday morning, the 31st of August, we get a bump. Swell climbs to 7ft from the WNW with an 8-second period. The combined energy is pumping hard (1055). But here’s the catch – that’s big enough to be expert-only territory. The wind is light from the south, so it’ll be cross-on, but not too messy. If you're a strong paddler who loves a challenge, this morning window is the only real standout in the whole 16-day window. But it’s still over a week away, so keep an eye on it – long-range calls like this are promising but not locked in.
For the rest of the run after that? Tuesday the 1st of September drops back to 5ft (WNW) with light onshores, and the energy fades to 428–452. Not worth the drive.
Honestly, if you’re not keen on that last Monday, this is a kite-surfing stretch more than a stand-up paddle session. The cross-on winds and moderate wave energy will keep the kites happy. For surfers, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
