Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be honest: Stinson Beach is looking at a pretty lean run over the next 16 days. There’s a big gap at the start with absolutely nothing to recommend. The first faint chance to get wet isn’t until the morning of Monday, July 6th, and even that’s a real scraper.
From Thursday, July 2nd through the weekend, it’s all poor conditions. Tiny waves running 2ft to 4ft, with onshore and cross-onshore breezes messing things up. The water’s at 62°F, which is a good 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s really unusual, so at least the swim will be warm, but the surf is a bust.
Monday morning, July 6th, gives us a tiny 3ft SW swell with a long 16-second period. There’s some energy there (702 units of combined swell energy – moderate), but the wind is onshore and the quality is marginal. You’d be scratching for a ride.
The best of a bad lot comes Tuesday morning, July 7th. The swell is still small at 2ft from the SW, but the period is a very long 19 seconds. The energy is moderate at 746. The wind is a light breeze out of the west, making it a light cross-onshore. It’s not glass, but it’s the cleanest window in the whole forecast. This is your quietest bet for a few long-waiting, clean waves.
Wednesday morning, July 8th, the swell bumps to 3ft SW at 18 seconds, and the energy jumps to a strong 1217. But again, that cross-onshore breeze is there to mess up the surface.
From Thursday, July 9th, the size picks up to 6ft to 7ft from the WNW, but the period drops to a short 7-8 seconds. That’s weak, wind-driven slop. The winds get stronger, making it choppy and lumpy. For a few days there, with that size and terrible shape, it’s going to look way more fun for a kite than a paddle board.
Saturday morning, July 11th, has a moment with almost no wind (SW, 3 mph), but the swell is a short-period 6ft WNW mess. Still marginal.
The last real glimmer is Thursday, July 16th. We’ve got a bigger 7ft NW swell with a short period (8 seconds), but the wind is glassy offshore (SW, 3 mph). The combined energy is a strong 1273. That’s got some punch, and the clean air will make for some steep, hollow beach-break wedges. For strong, experienced surfers only, that’s your best shot all forecast. It’s way out there, so file it under promising but less certain.
Beginners should steer clear once the swell hits 5ft or so, which is from July 9th on.
Bottom line: it’s a long, slow period. Keep hopes up for Thursday the 16th and maybe Tuesday the 7th for a quiet session.
Rusty.
