The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, looking at the surf over the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it's a dry spell for most of the period. The early part of the outlook is pretty grim, with a mix of onshore wind and lumpy, messy conditions that just aren't worth paddling out for. The only real glimmer of hope, and I mean a proper glimmer, comes right at the very end of the forecast in the last week of July.
The first real recommendation doesn't come until Saturday morning, July 25th at Stinson Beach. It's still a marginal call, but this is the best we've got. We're looking at a long-period southwest groundswell with a period of 21 seconds, producing a modest 3ft wave. The combined swell energy is strong at 1101, so there's power in the water, but the real beauty is that the wind is swinging light offshore from the southwest, with barely a breath of air. That should keep things glassy and clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year. This is a fairly consistent spot, so you can expect some waves. For a beginner-friendly break, the size is perfect, but don't expect it to be empty; crowds are sometimes a thing here.
Sunday morning, July 26th looks similar with a clean, offshore southwest wind and a 3ft, 20-second period swell with a combined energy of 1115. It's another marginal option, but the conditions are shaping up to be pretty darn good for a summer session. The swell is small, but those long, clean lines will be a treat.
From Monday, July 27th, the wind starts to swing cross-on, and the surf becomes more of a chore. The quality drops off, and the conditions get choppy again. So, in short, there's a big gap of nothing until the final weekend of July. That's a solid 10 days of waiting. For the area, a blank run like this isn't too unusual, but it tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change. For now, the real standout is the morning of Saturday July 25th and Sunday July 26th – that's your window.
Rusty.
