The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about Stinson Beach. It's a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, so let's get into it.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. We've got a small, long-period SW groundswell rolling in on Wednesday the 19th, with a 15-second period, but it's only 2ft. The morning starts clean with a light 3 mph SW wind, but the energy is weak (424). By afternoon, the wind swings WNW and cranks up to 12 mph, making the surface a choppy mess, so don't bother. Thursday the 20th is even worse – a bumpy 5ft NW windswell with a short 7-second period and a light cross-onshore breeze just isn't worth it. This pattern holds through the rest of the week and into the next. The wind is almost always coming from the West or WNW, cross-onshore or onshore, which ruins any chance of clean waves. You'll see a few glimmers of hope with some light morning winds and a bit of long-period energy, like on Sunday the 23rd with a 1ft 19-second swell, or Monday the 24th with a 2ft 18-second swell, but the swell heights are just too small to get excited about.
The real standout, and the only one worth circling on the calendar, is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning looks like a proper event. We're expecting a solid 8ft NW groundswell, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is strong as hell at 1672. The best part? The wind is light and offshore from the WSW at just 3 mph. That's going to make for some clean, lined-up waves. Now, at 8ft, this is definitely for experienced surfers only – it's going to be a powerful, heavy day. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
There's another mention on the 26th of August with a 6ft NW swell, but the wind is already cross-onshore, so it won't be as clean. The 2nd of September is the one. The crowd at Stinson is sometimes an issue, so expect some company if you're paddling out for that morning session.
So, to sum it up: a long, slow stretch of poor conditions, then one big, powerful day on the horizon for the experts. We'll have to wait and see if that forecast holds. For the beginners, the water will be too big on the 2nd of September, and the rest of the window is flat and choppy.
Rusty.
