The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about Pleasure Point-Sewer Peak. We're looking at a long, dry stretch ahead. For the next two weeks, it's pretty grim. There are no standout sessions, no proper waves to get excited about, just small, weak, cross-shore slop. From Tuesday, August 4th right through to Wednesday, August 19th, it's the same story: tiny swell, light cross-shore winds, and conditions that are, to be blunt, a write-off for surfing. We're talking swell heights of just 1ft to 2ft for the first week, struggling to hit 3ft right at the end. The water temp is sitting at 59°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, with an anomaly of only 0.9°F – nothing unusual there.

The whole 16-day window is essentially a gap with no recommendations. Even the best day, Saturday, August 15th, is only a marginal call with a 3ft SSW swell and combined energy climbing to 493 – moderate energy, but the conditions are still cross-shore and poor. For a reef break like this, a long-period groundswell is the dream, and we do see the period stretching to 19 seconds on a few occasions like Friday, August 7th and Tuesday, August 11th. That's proper groundswell, which at a point break like Pleasure Point can produce some lined-up walls, but the swell heights are just too tiny and the wind is never clean offshore – it's always that cross-shore breeze messing it up. The optimum direction is SSW, and that's what we're getting, but without any size or clean wind, it's a waste.

Honestly, there's nothing here that'll get your heart pumping. If you're a beginner, the swell never gets over 5ft, so that's not a problem, but there's also no real wave to learn on. It's more of a paddle-around situation. For the experts who know this break, you'd be waiting for a proper south swell and some glass – and you're not getting it. The whole period looks more like a flat spell than anything worth chasing.

Rusty.
