Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks at Fort Point.
Alright, so the long-range picture for Fort Point is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got waves on the way, but you’ve got to pick your moments. The first week is full of inconsistent, smaller swells with moderate to breezy cross-offshore winds that keep things rideable but not exactly firing. The real standout, the one you want to circle on your calendar, is the Sunday morning of the 26th of July. That’s looking like the day.
Let’s start with this Sunday, the 12th of July. It’s not looking too flash. Morning has some 4ft swell from the WNW with an average 8-second period and moderate combined wave energy (203). The water is a very unusual 63°, a massive 7° warmer than normal for the time of year. The surf is surfable under a light breeze, but it’s very ordinary. Monday is more of the same story with similar 4ft WNW swell and light wind in the morning.
Tuesday the 14th sees the swell bump up a little, with 4ft from the WNW in the morning and then pushing 5ft by the afternoon with a short period of 7 seconds and moderate energy (423). Wind stays cross-off. Still just ordinary conditions.
Wednesday morning the 15th is where it starts to get a bit more interesting. You’ve got 5ft from the WNW, a light breeze, and the forecast actually says good surf conditions. Combined energy is climbing to a solid moderate level (438). That is a window to paddle out. The afternoon, however, turns into a write-off with a 16 mph west wind and poor conditions.
Thursday the 16th morning shows a jump in size with an 8ft from the NW, a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps right into a strong range (1723). However, the wind turns cross-shore with a chop, and the forecast calls it marginal. At 8ft, this is getting into expert-only territory, and the cross-shore wind will make it messy.
Friday the 17th morning is a good bet. Dropping back to 5ft from the WNW with a gentler breeze (9 mph) and good surf conditions called. That’s a solid option for anyone intermediate and up.
Now, look at the weekend of the 18th and 19th. The swell drops right off to a tiny 2ft, but the period is a very long 17 to 18 seconds from the southwest. This is pure long-period groundswell, which means better shaped waves and long lulls between sets. Combined energy is still decent at around 470+. The wind is light and cross-off, so those smaller sets will be super clean. It’s rideable on a longboard, but don't expect much push. This pattern continues into the start of the following week.
The next real standout is Saturday the 25th of July. You’ve got a 5ft to 6ft WNW swell, a 9-second period, light wind in the morning, and combined energy building back into a solid moderate range (613). The forecast says good conditions. That is worth getting wet for.
But the absolute best on offer is the morning of Sunday the 26th of July. This is the one. The swell comes in at a solid 8ft from the NW with a 9-second period and the combined energy is a very strong 2136. The wind is a light 6 mph from the WSW, blowing cross-offshore. That’s the cleanest it’s going to be. For experienced surfers, this will be an excellent session. The size puts it firmly in expert-only water. The afternoon looks questionable again with a strong onshore breeze.
Monday the 27th is a drop-off back to 5ft with moderate energy and a moderate breeze. The end of the run is just marginal.
So, in summary, you’ve got a couple of windows to work with. Wednesday the 15th and Friday the 17th mornings are your best bets in the first week for clean, fun waves. The weekend of the 18th is small but clean. The big standout, the one on the calendar, is the morning of Sunday the 26th of July for the experts. Don’t sleep on Saturday the 25th either. Get amongst it.
Rusty.
