The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first few days are pretty ordinary. We’ve got a tiny, inconsistent swell rolling in, but the real juice is a long way off. The standout, no question, is the Sunday morning session on the 30th of August. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. Before that, you’ll be scratching your head a bit, but there’s a little window on Friday the 28th that might just get the blood pumping.
We're looking at Fort Point, a sheltered beach and reef setup that needs the right direction. It’s an advanced wave, and it’s inconsistent, so don’t expect a party wave every set. The water is running a balmy 65°F, which is a solid 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a full-on tropical anomaly, so a spring suit might be all you need.
The Long Wait for the Good Stuff
The first few mornings are small, with a weak 1ft to 2ft SW swell, but the wind is light and glassy. That Sunday morning, the 23rd, the wind is dead calm – glass – and the water is like a mirror. But the swell is short and weak. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it. Monday through Wednesday (24th-26th) are the same story: small, weak SW pulses, with clean cross-offshore winds in the mornings. The afternoons get a bit windier and cross-shore, making things messy.
Thursday the 27th is more of the same. We get a tiny bump in size to 4ft, but the period drops to a pathetic 6 seconds, which is just wind chop. The energy is weak (248). Not worth the paddle.
Friday the 28th – A Glimmer of Hope
Now, Friday morning the 28th is where it starts to get interesting. The swell jumps to a solid 6ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is light and cross-offshore, and the energy is moderate to strong (597). The forecast says "expect good surf conditions." This is the first real window for a decent wave. The afternoon gets blown out again by a strong cross-shore wind, so make it a dawn patrol.
The Sunday Standout – 30th August
This is the one. Sunday morning the 30th of August. The conditions come together perfectly. The swell hits 7ft from the NW, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind? Dead calm – glass. The energy is a powerful 1340 (very strong). This is the biggest, cleanest swell of the forecast period. The only catch is that at 7ft, it’s getting into the “experts only” territory, especially on a reef. The south-west facing beach might be a bit of a close-out with that short period, but if the direction lines up right, it could be a classic. The afternoon gets messy again, so it’s a morning mission.
The Second Week – Mixed Signals
The rest of the run is a bit of a mixed bag. Monday the 31st has a solid 6ft WNW swell, but with a strong cross-shore wind, it’s going to be lumpy. Tuesday the 1st of September is smaller and weaker. Wednesday the 2nd is glassy in the morning, but the swell is back down to 1ft.
There’s a flicker of hope on Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September. The swell is only 2ft to 3ft, but it’s from the SW with a long period of 17-19 seconds, and the energy is moderate (566-577). The wind is light and cross-offshore. This is your classic long-period groundswell. It will wrap nicely into the point, but it might be a bit too straight for the beach. Still, it’s a clean, fun option.
The final weekend, the 5th and 6th of September, sees a return of the WNW swell at 5ft to 5ft, but the wind is howling – 15-22 mph – making for a lumpy, blown-out mess. The 7th of September is glassy again, but it’s only 4ft with a 10-second period, so it’s a clean but small wrap.
The Verdict
If you’ve got one day to surf, make it the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. That’s the big, clean, glassy winner. Friday the 28th is a solid second choice. The rest of the time you’ll be picking through small, clean, but weak swells, or fighting the wind. For the more experienced crew, those long-period SW swells on the 3rd and 4th of September could offer some fun, wrapping lines.
Stay stoked, and I’ll see you out there.
