The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Fort Point.
Right off the bat, the next week and a half is a bit of a bust. The first decent surf doesn’t show up until Wednesday, August 26th, with a solid 6ft swell from the WNW. The morning looks clean with a light breeze, but the combined energy is a moderate 636 – that’s some push behind it. The problem is, this is a sheltered spot, and it’s only good for advanced surfers; it’s also inconsistent, so don’t expect a constant flow. The afternoon of the 26th sees the swell jump to 8ft, which is big and grunty, but the wind picks up, making it marginal. The real standout is the morning of Thursday, August 27th. We’ve got that same 6ft WNW swell, but the wind drops to a mere 3 mph from the SW, making it a nearly glassy morning. The energy is still strong at 615, and the water temp is about average for this time of year. It’s not huge, but it’s the cleanest, most surfable window we’ve got in the whole 16-day run.
Then we hit a bit of a lull through the end of August with some messy cross-shore winds, before another highlight pops up on Sunday, August 30th. The morning shows a solid 6ft swell from the NW with a gentle breeze and strong energy (936), but the wind is cross-off, not quite as perfect as the 27th. The real gem is Monday, August 31st. The morning is glassy with a 3 mph SW wind, a 7ft NW swell, and a combined energy of 816. That’s a solid, clean, powerful swell – the best on offer for the whole period. But remember, over 8ft it’s expert territory, so this is for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets blown out again.
After that, the first days of September look weak and ordinary again. The waves are just too small or the wind is too messy to get excited about. So, the play is: mark your calendars for the morning of the 27th of August, and especially the morning of the 31st of August. That’s as good as it gets here.
Rusty.
