The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks for Fort Point. This is a consistent spot on paper, but the quality is going to be a mix bag, so we need to pick the moments.
The whole outlook is dominated by cross-offshore winds from the SW to WSW. Those winds keep the surface clean but mean the wave faces are never truly glassy. We’ve got moderate wave energy overall, rating between 310 and 738 (units of combined swell energy) across the period, so there’s always something pushing in, but it’s rarely going to be offering up classic, punchy walls because of the wind angle.
The standout in the first week lands on Friday, August 21st morning. Swell builds to about 4 ft from the WNW with a combined energy of 412. It’s got a decent 7-second period, so it’s a bit soft, but the winds are manageable at 9 mph and it’s clean. That morning session looks the pick of that week. By Friday afternoon, it jumps to 6 ft with a 457 combined energy, but the wind picks up to 16 mph, making it a bit of a battle. That size is getting into expert territory for this setup.
After that, things settle into a pattern of small but clean cross-off conditions through the following week. The real highlight for the whole outlook, though, happens on Monday, August 31st morning. Swell is 6 ft from the NW with a 7-second period, and combined energy hits 738 – that’s strong energy for this spot. The wind is light at 6 mph, keeping it clean. That’s the session you circle on the calendar. It’s a long way out, so don’t bank on it, but if that NW direction lines up with the optimum NW direction for Fort Point, it could be an absolute diamond.
Overall, it’s not a period of pumping perfection, but there are a few good clean windows for a paddle out. The deep long-range standouts on the 31st and into September 1st are the best bets for a proper session.
Rusty, signing off.
