The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Fort Point.
First off, we’re looking at a solid run of waiting through the next few days. The surf picks up a little late in the piece, but the first week is mostly ordinary. The swell is small and inconsistent, and the wind is cross or cross-off, but the real standout doesn’t appear until Thursday, August 27th.
Let’s talk about Thursday, August 27th. That morning we’ve got a 7ft NW swell pushing in with a period of 8 seconds. Combined wave energy is strong at 923. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SW, keeping the surface clean. This is a proper bump in size and energy, and it’s the first time the surf really gets going. For advanced crew only – 7ft is solid for this spot.
The best of the whole run, though, is the following Saturday, August 29th. The morning sees a 7ft WNW swell, period 8 seconds, and combined energy hits 1249 – very strong. Wind is a gentle cross-off again, so clean conditions. This is a big, powerful swell that will have Fort Point working. Another one for the experienced.
Then, Sunday, August 30th is absolute magic. The morning is glassy – complete calm, 5 km/h from the SW, a 7ft NW swell with 8-second period, and combined energy of 1128. This is a standout morning. Glassy, clean, and pumping. That’s a session you’ll remember.
After that, the run continues into Monday, August 31st with a 6ft NW swell in the morning, good energy (635), and cross-off wind. Thursday, September 3rd, is another glassy morning with a 3ft W swell, period 10 seconds, and calm wind – a nice clean, smaller day for a paddle.
Keep in mind, Fort Point is an advanced spot, and it’s inconsistent. It doesn’t break often, so when it does, you want to be on it. It’s also sheltered from most directions, and the optimum swell direction is NW. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no wild anomalies.
The second week has some promising pulses, but it’s a bit more uncertain. The real call is to be ready for that last week of August and into the first days of September.
This is Rusty, signing off.
