The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Fort Point. This is a sheltered beach and reef break, only for advanced crew, and it’s inconsistent – doesn’t break often, so you gotta pick your moments. Right now we’re in a quiet spell, but there’s a run of clean waves coming.
First real chance is Saturday, July 18, morning. Swell is only 2ft from the SW, but the period is 17 seconds – a proper groundswell. Combined energy is moderate. The wind is a light cross-offshore, so the surface will be clean. It’s small, but with that long period, you’ll get some shape.
Sunday, July 19, morning is similar: 2ft W swell at 15 seconds, light cross-off wind. Clean but weak.
Now, Friday, July 24, morning is a standout little window: 2ft SW swell with a massive 24-second period. Energy jumps up. That kind of period brings real power and shape. Light cross-off wind. Fort Point can handle it. Crowds are possible here, so expect company.
Saturday, July 25, morning is even better: 3ft SW at 21 seconds, energy is strong. Same clean conditions. This is a great small-wave day.
Sunday, July 26, morning keeps the theme: 3ft SW at 19 seconds, strong energy, clean.
Then we get a size bump. Monday, July 27, afternoon has 4ft SW at 19 seconds, energy is very strong. Still cross-off and clean.
The absolute best is Tuesday, July 28, morning: 4ft SW at 18 seconds, very strong energy. Light cross-off wind. This is the session to target.
Wednesday, July 29, morning is almost as good: 4ft SW at 16 seconds, very strong energy. Clean.
Thursday, July 30, morning is big: 8ft from the NW at only 9 seconds. Short-period, steep, messy. Energy is extreme, but only for experts. The short period will make it fat.
Friday, July 31, morning drops to 7ft WNW at 10 seconds, energy is moderate. Cross-off wind. Still big but a bit more rideable.
Saturday, August 1, morning is 5ft WNW at 10 seconds with light winds. A decent end to the run.
Best bets: Tuesday, July 28 and Wednesday, July 29 mornings – that’s the sweet spot for clean, powerful waves at Fort Point.
