The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s shaping up for Tracks (Nanakuli) over the next couple of weeks. It’s a mixed bag, but there’s a definite window to keep an eye on.
We’re starting off with pretty ordinary conditions. The swell is tiny – only about 2 ft from the SSW with a long 16-second period – and the wind is cross-off from the E. That gives us clean faces but very little push. The water temp is sitting at 79.7°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for mid-July. The first few days, from Friday the 17th through Saturday the 18th, are marginal at best. Not worth paddling out unless you’re desperate for a float.
Sunday the 19th sees the wind swing offshore from the ENE, still only 2 ft, but it’s a bit cleaner. Still, the wave energy is low (combined energy around 150-236). Monday the 20th afternoon brings a slight uptick – 2.6 ft from the S, 16-second period, and offshore ENE wind at 12 mph. That gives us the first real glimmer of hope. Combined energy jumps to 406 (moderate). Tuesday morning the 21st is similar, with 3 ft S swell, 14-second period, and gentle offshore breeze. Solid enough for a fun little session on a longboard.
Then things get interesting. Wednesday the 22nd morning shows a very long 24-second period from the SSW – that’s proper groundswell – but only 2 ft and cross-off wind. The energy is moderate at 705, but with such a long period and small size, it might be a bit tricky at this beach-and-reef setup. Not a standout.
The real standout comes on Sunday the 26th. The morning session offers 3.3 ft from the SSW, 17-second period, and offshore ENE wind at 16 mph. Combined energy is 617 (moderate), and the conditions are described as “very good.” This is the best wave quality across the whole outlook – clean, decent size, and that offshore wind will keep the faces smooth. If you can only pick one session, this is it. Keep in mind the swell is just over 3 ft, so it’s fine for intermediates, and the period is long enough to give good shape. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so get out early.
After that, Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th drop back a bit in size and energy, but still offer clean conditions with offshore winds. By Thursday the 30th, the wind goes light and even glassy on Friday the 31st. On the 31st, we have 2 ft from the SSW, 16-second period, with glassy conditions and combined energy up to 422 in the afternoon. That’s a nice window for a clean, relaxed surf, though the swell is small.
Heading into August 1st, Saturday morning looks okay with 2 ft SW, 15-second period and light cross-off wind, but then the wind picks up in the afternoon.
Overall, the best bet is Sunday July 26th morning. That’s the one that’ll have you grinning. The glassy morning on Friday July 31st is also a good option for a clean, mellow session
