The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Sand spit over the next couple of weeks.

Truth be told, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. We’ve got a solid, consistent sandbar setup here, but the conditions just aren’t playing ball for most of the forecast. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing crazy, but you’ll notice it’s slightly on the mild side.

The only real window that’s worth getting excited about is Thursday morning, the 13th of August. We’ve got a clean-looking morning with a light cross-offshore breeze from the south at 6 mph, and the swell is a modest 2ft, coming from the SW with a long-period of 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and combined wave energy is sitting at 356 – moderate, but with that period it’ll have some push. The wind will keep things tidy, so Sand spit should offer up some fun, well-shaped waves for the intermediate crew. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, but on a Thursday morning you might find a bit of room.

After that, it’s a long stretch of mostly onshore wind and poor quality. From Thursday afternoon right through to the end of the month, the wind is locked in from the west to west-northwest, often onshore or cross-on, with speeds picking up to 12–19 mph. The swell height doesn’t really get above 3ft until the 22nd of August, but when it does, it’s short-period windswell from the WNW at only 7 seconds – that’s messy, choppy stuff, not worth paddling out for. The combined energy on the 22nd afternoon is a moderate 582, but with that period and onshore wind, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a surfing one.

There’s a little flicker on the morning of the 23rd of August – a 2ft SW swell with a long 19-second period, but the wind is onshore from the west at 6 mph, and the overall call is marginal. Not enough to get the heart racing.

Beyond that, the second week is just more of the same: small SW swells, onshore wind, and poor surf conditions. No standout days to circle on the calendar. Sand spit is a consistent spot, but this run is a real test of patience.
