The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Morro Rock over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you—this run is looking pretty bleak for a paddle. The swell is there, but the quality is just not cooperating. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, but let’s be real, most of it is a write-off.
The first real chance to even think about a surf comes on Thursday, 16 July. The afternoon shows a clear sky, but that’s where the good news ends. We’ve got a 8ft swell from the WNW, but at a short, weak period of 8 seconds. The wind is a brisk 12 mph onshore from the WNW, which is just going to chop it up. The combined energy is moderate at 911, but with that wind, it’s going to be a bumpy, messy paddle. The water temp is 59°F, which is about average for the time of year. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a traditional surfer.
Friday morning, 17 July, is a slight improvement. The swell drops to 5ft, still from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind lightens right off to a 3 mph onshore breeze from the WSW. The combined energy is still moderate at 755. It’s a marginal call, but it might be the cleanest window in the whole outlook. The afternoon wipes out again with a 5ft swell and 9 mph onshore wind.
Saturday, 18 July, is a tease. The morning has a tiny 3ft swell from the SW, but it’s a beautiful, long-period groundswell of 18 seconds. The wind is glassy from the WSW at 3 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 938. This long-period swell is better suited for a point or reef, not a beach break like Morro Rock, so it might break too straight. Still, if you’re keen, it’s the most promising session in the first week. The afternoon is a no-go.
From Sunday, 19 July, through to the end of the month, it’s a grim stretch. Swell heights bounce between 2ft and 6ft, but the wind is almost always onshore, cross-on, or cross-shore, leaving the surf poor. There’s a long gap of days with no real recommendations. The combined energy values are all low or moderate, and the scores are consistently zero. The setup is just not working for us.
The second week doesn’t get any better. A few days late in July show some size again—like the 28th with an 8ft swell from the WNW at 8 seconds, but it’s 12 mph onshore wind, making it messy and big. This is only for experts, and even then, it’s not clean. The 29th has a 6ft swell with lighter wind, but the period is still short at 8 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate. The quality is still poor.
To be honest, the standout window in this whole 16-day outlook is that Saturday morning, 18 July. The 3ft, 18-second SW groundswell with glassy conditions is your best bet. It’s clean, it’s got energy, but it’s tiny and long-period. The other faint glimmer is Friday morning, 17 July, with the light wind. For the rest, you’re fighting the wind and the chop. Morro Rock is a consistent spot, but it’s not delivering good surf this time.
Rusty.
