Table - best surf conditions forecast for Morro Rock over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me break it down for Morro Rock over the next couple of weeks. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—we’ve got a rough run ahead.
Right now, starting Thursday July 9th, it’s ugly. Water is a little colder than usual at 58°F (about 2° cooler than average), and the wind is cross-onshore making it choppy. Swell is only 5 feet from the WNW with a short 8-second period. The combined swell energy is just 285–weak.
Your first real shot at a paddle happens Friday July 10th morning. The swell jumps to 8 feet from the NW, still a short 8-second period, but light onshore wind. The combined energy is strong at 1,112, but tide conditions make it questionable. Not a standout, just the best of a slow start.
Saturday July 11th through Monday July 13th is a flat spell—swell drops to 3 feet or smaller, light cross-onshore winds, and low energy (between 140 and 231). You’ll want to skip these days.
Tuesday July 14th morning brings a weak pulse: 5 feet from the NW, light onshore, but again marginal. Wednesday July 15th morning has a better size of 7 feet from the NW with combined energy at 1,097, but period is still short at 8 seconds and it’s cross-onshore.
Now, the one true standout. Look ahead to Friday July 17th. Early that morning, the swell is only 2 feet from the WNW, but the period jumps to 18 seconds–that’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy is 601, and we get light offshore wind from the WSW. Clean, lined-up, glassy conditions. It’s small, so bring the longboard or a fish, but for pure quality, this is the day. The long swell will wrap into the point nicely.
The long-period carries through Saturday July 18th and Sunday July 19th, but the swell stays tiny (2 to 3 feet) and the winds shift more onshore or cross-onshore later. Saturday morning is still okay with that 18-second period, but it’s not like Friday.
Then Monday July 20th through Thursday July 24th, it fizzles to nothing. Swell is 1 foot or less, periods shorten, and energy readings drop to single digits. The combined energy on July 22nd is a pathetic 4. That’s a dead ocean. Afternoon winds on the 20th and 24th get up to 12 mph cross-onshore, which would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddling.
So here’s the deal: The first week is marginal. The one day to circle on your calendar is Friday July 17th morning for that clean, long-period 2-foot groundswell with offshore wind. After that, you’ve got a long run of flatness. This area knows how to go quiet, so don’t stress—forecasts can change, but right now, patience is your best move.
Rusty.
