Table - best surf conditions forecast for Rincon - Rivermouth over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for us. The standout is Rincon - Rivermouth, a classic point break that picks up a lot of west-northwest energy. The water is sitting at a very warm 69°F, which is much warmer than what we usually get this time of year, so it’s a bit of a treat.
The first few days are pretty quiet, with tiny surf. From Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 26th of August, we’re looking at knee-to-waist high waves at best, mostly from the south-southwest with a very long period swell. The energy is weak to moderate (68 to 180), and the light cross-off winds will keep the surface clean, but it’s really just small, ordinary conditions. The early morning of the 26th is the same story, but by that afternoon a 5ft swell from the west-northwest shows up, though it’s on a short period of 6 seconds, making it a bit lumpy and marginal.
The real change comes on Thursday the 27th of August. The afternoon brings a 5ft west-northwest swell with a light cross-off breeze, and the wave energy bumps up to 252, which is moderate. The conditions are clean, and it’s a solid step up. Friday the 28th has a similar vibe, with a 1ft swell from the south-southwest, but it’s got a very long period of 19 seconds, and the wave energy is building to 295. The light cross-off wind cleans it up, making for a good session.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th of August looks even better. Saturday afternoon has a 3ft south-southwest swell with a 16-second period and a crisp cross-off breeze, with wave energy climbing to 427. Sunday morning is the pick of the early part, with a glassy 3ft south-southwest swell, 15-second period, and a light 5 km/h cross-off wind. The wave energy is sitting at 350, and it’s just clean, long lines.
Monday the 31st of August is a stand-out session. The morning has a 3ft west swell with a 9-second period and a light cross-off wind, but the afternoon is the real deal. A 6ft west-northwest swell, short period of 6 seconds, but the wind is glassy and the wave energy is 346. It’s a powerful, punchy wave that will be a lot of fun for intermediate surfers. The 5ft+ height means it’s a bit much for beginners, but the point break setup will handle that energy well.
The first week of September keeps the momentum going. Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon has a 7ft west-northwest swell, 6-second period, and glassy conditions, with wave energy at 365. That’s a bigger, more powerful wave, and the light wind will keep it clean. Wednesday the 2nd has a 3ft west swell in the morning, and the afternoon sees a 4ft west swell, both with light cross-off winds. Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon has a 2ft south-southwest swell with a very long 21-second period, and the wave energy is a strong 524. The wind is cross-shore, which makes it a bit trickier, but the long period means the waves will have serious shape and energy.
The best of the whole window is on Friday the 4th of September. The morning has a 3ft south-southwest swell with a 19-second period and a light cross-off wind, and the wave energy is a solid 613. The afternoon is the same, with a 3ft south-southwest swell, 18-second period, and wave energy at 523. The conditions are very clean, and the long period groundswell will peel perfectly down the point. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Expect crowds though, as it’s a spot that’s often busy.
The weekend of the 5th and 6th of September sees a drop in quality. A cross-on wind from the south-southeast on Saturday kills the waves, making them choppy and poor. Sunday morning is marginal, but the afternoon of Sunday the 6th has a 4ft west swell with an 8-second period, light cross-off wind, and wave energy at 336, giving us a decent end to the run.
Rusty.
