The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty.
Alright, folks, let’s be real about this stretch. Looking at Hollywood Beach, the next two weeks plus are a tough watch. The forecast is filled with poor surf conditions and weak, messy energy. There’s a real gap at the start with nothing worth paddling for, and it just drags on. We’re talking about over a week straight of “poor surf conditions” coming up, which is a rough run. The swell is tiny, the wind is on it or cross-on it most of the time, and honestly, it’s a kite surfer’s kind of setup, not a paddle surfer’s.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the very end of the month. For the morning of Saturday, August 29th, we see a spike in energy. The combined swell energy jumps up to a moderate 411, with a 3ft SSW swell. That’s not huge, but it’s the biggest we’ve seen in weeks. The swell is from the SSW, which is a solid direction for this exposed spot, and those 17-second periods are a true groundswell with some real push. The wind is light and straight onshore, which is a bummer, but with almost no wind, it’ll be clean. The water temperature is a wild 70°F, which is 6°F warmer than normal, so it’s much warmer than usual for this time of year.
Hollywood Beach is a fairly consistent spot, but it’s also often crowded. For a spot that’s been flat for so long, when that swell finally shows up on the 29th, expect company. It’s a small window of hope after a long, flat slog. The crowds will be there, but if you get it right, the trade-off is a clean, long-period swell that’s got some life to it.
So, the stand-out is that Saturday morning the 29th and then the morning of Sunday the 30th, with similar energy at 407 and a 3ft SSW swell. The wind is light and onshore again, keeping it clean. It’s the best we’ve got, and it’s promising, but it’s a long way off, so don’t lock it in just yet.
Rusty.
