The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a real mixed bag coming our way at Campus Point over the next couple of weeks. The water temp is sitting where you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Overall, don’t get your hopes up for anything epic. The first week is dominated by tiny, weak swell. We’re talking a long period groundswell from the SSW, but at 1ft to 2ft it’s barely a ripple. The energy is in the moderate range, hitting around 277 on Wednesday morning, but it just doesn’t have the size. A light cross-off wind will keep things clean on Wednesday afternoon, making it the best of a pretty average bunch early on. The swell is coming from the SSW, which isn’t the optimum W direction for this spot, so it’s not really wrapping in well.
Thursday and Friday stay small, with the energy dropping into the 100s, and the surf is just ordinary. The weekend and into the start of the following week is more of the same – tiny, weak swell with light cross-off winds. It’s surfable, but you’ll be fighting for knee-high lumps.
We hit a total blank period from around the 28th of August, with all zeros or poor surf, before things start to look a little more interesting right at the end of the run. The standout action, if you can call it that, is the last few days of August and into September. On the 29th of August, the afternoon session sees a bump in energy to 440 from a 2ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, and it’s clean. The morning of the 30th of August is also clean with similar energy. Then, on the 31st of August, we get a bit of size – the morning has 5ft of WNW windswell, but it’s a short period, very low energy at 6 seconds. That’s a messy, lumpy wave. The energy is strong at 507 that afternoon, but the period is still a terrible 6 seconds. It’s going to be a bit of a washing machine. This is really only for the experienced crew, as it’s over 5ft and short-period.
The first promise of something decent comes on the 2nd of September. The morning has a 4ft WNW swell at 9 seconds, with a light WSW wind, clean, and moderate energy at 340. That’s the best look of the whole forecast. The afternoon of the 2nd gets a bit bigger and windier, but the morning session on the 3rd of September is also a solid bet with 4ft and clean conditions. Keep an eye on the forecasts as we get closer.
Rusty.
