The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the surf coming up for Campus Point. The water’s sitting at 66°—that’s a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so you’ll be feeling that warmth when you paddle out.
The next 16 days are a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some real gems hiding in there. We’ve got a few days of quiet, small surf to kick things off, but hold tight—the real action starts building in the second week. The overall pattern is a slow build, with a couple of standout windows that are worth clearing your schedule for.
Let’s start with the opening. Friday, July 17th, offers small waves, with a 3ft WNW swell at 8 seconds in the morning, but it’s a light cross-shore breeze and the energy is weak (354). The afternoon drops to 1ft from the WNW but with a very long 17-second period—that’s a groundswell—and clean conditions. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Saturday and Sunday, July 18th-19th, stay small, with 2ft to 2ft SW swells, long periods of 17-18 seconds, and light cross-off winds. The energy is moderate (327-492), and the surf is clean but tiny. Monday, July 20th, is a nice little tease: 3ft from the S at 13 seconds, glassy conditions in the morning, and clean cross-off in the afternoon. Energy is moderate (443-487), and it’s a fun, small window.
The real standouts start showing up on the 25th of July. Saturday, July 25th, is the pick of the bunch. The morning brings a 2ft SSW swell with a very long 21-second period, light cross-off winds, and the energy is strong (877). The surf is clean and well-shaped—this is a point break, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in beautifully. It’s a great option for intermediates, with the swell size staying under 5ft. Crowds can be a thing here, so get in early. The afternoon holds at 2ft from the same direction, still clean, but the energy drops a bit (635).
Sunday, July 26th, is another cracker. Morning sees 2ft from the SW at 19 seconds, light cross-off winds, and strong energy (723). The afternoon is similar at 2ft, 18 seconds, with clean conditions and moderate energy (554). This is consistent, clean, and fun all day.
Monday, July 27th, and Tuesday, July 28th, are both worth a mention. Monday morning has 3ft from the SSW at 18 seconds, with a light cross breeze and strong energy (803). The afternoon is clean and 3ft, with very good conditions (677). Tuesday morning is 3ft, SSW, 17 seconds, strong energy (797), and the afternoon bumps to 4ft, 18 seconds, with very good surf (819). That afternoon on the 28th is a solid one—clean, head-high plus waves, and a long period making for proper waves.
Wednesday, July 29th, is a bit of a letdown. The morning is 3ft from the SW at 16 seconds, but the wind turns cross-on, and the surf is marginal. The afternoon stays similar, but the energy is still strong (708-685). It’s surfable, but not the best.
Thursday, July 30th, offers a surprise. The morning is poor with onshore wind, but the afternoon turns glassy with a 4ft WNW swell at 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (381), and it’s clean—a nice little window for a quick session.
The rest of the week into August 1st stays small, with 2ft to 3ft swells, mostly clean or light breezes, but nothing that jumps out as a standout. The energy is moderate (294-374).
So, to sum it up: the best days are Saturday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 26th, with the Tuesday, July 28th afternoon being a close second. The long-period swells over those days will make Campus Point shine. Get out there.
Rusty.
