The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for the next couple of weeks. The real window to watch is from Monday August 31st into early September, when a solid west-northwest swell fills in with clean winds.
Right now we’re in a long run of tiny, ordinary waves. Campus Point is seeing tiny south-southwest swells around 1ft, with a long period of 13 to 19 seconds. The combined energy is low to moderate (114 to 223), but on a point break those long-period waves can wrap in nicely. The water is way warmer than usual for this time of year—about 69°, a full 6° above normal—so you can leave the thick rubber at home. Winds are light and cross-offshore from the west-southwest, keeping it glassy, but the size is only good for a longboard or a funboard. That pattern holds from the 21st through the 26th of August.
By Tuesday the 25th of August afternoon, we see a slight bump: a 2ft south swell with a 17-second period, combined energy hits 301. Still moderate, but the wind picks up to a moderate breeze from the west-northwest at 15 mph, stirring up some chop. Wednesday the 26th of August afternoon brings a 3ft south swell, 13-second period, and combined energy of 419. That’s solid moderate energy. Winds are gentler, cross-off from the west-northwest at 9 mph. This is where a shortboard starts to feel fun.
The change comes Thursday the 27th of August. Morning surf has a 3ft south swell at 12 seconds and energy of 553—strong territory. It’s a bit crossed up with light winds, but the afternoon cleans up nicely. Winds shift to west at 6 mph, still cross-off, and the swell holds at 3ft. The forecast says *good surf conditions* then. That’s your first real highlight.
From there we build through the weekend. Saturday the 29th of August afternoon: a 2ft south-southwest swell with a 16-second period and combined energy of 478. Winds are gentle and cross-off from the west at 9 mph. Clean lines rolling in. Sunday the 30th of August morning is the same: 3ft south-southwest, 15 seconds, 478 energy, and light offshore winds. That’s the sweet spot for Campus Point—not too big, not too small, and silky.
The standout is Monday the 31st of August morning. We get a 5ft west-northwest swell with an 8-second period. Combined energy is 431. Winds are cross-off from the west at 9 mph. That’s real size for this spot. It’s a short-period swell, so at a beach break it might close out, but at Campus Point the reef will groom it. The afternoon jumps to 6ft but the period drops to 6 seconds, and the wind cranks up to 15 mph from the west-northwest, making it bumpy. The morning session is the pick.
We fade into September. Tuesday the 1st of September morning has a 3ft west-northwest swell, 8-second period, energy 239. It’s cross-breeze from the south-southwest, not ideal. Then it drops to 1ft by the afternoon with energy down to 75—essentially flat. Wednesday the 2nd of September brings a 2ft south swell, 12-second period, energy back to 298, with light winds. Ordinary but rideable. Thursday the 3rd of September has a tiny 1ft south-southwest swell but with a very long 20-second period. That’s a pure groundswell—long waits between sets, but clean waves when they come. Winds are light and cross-off.
Friday the 4th of September is a write-off: light rain and onshore winds from the south and south-southeast. Swell around 2ft with a 17-second period, but the chop will ruin it. Skip it.
We close out Saturday the 5th of September with small clean surf: 2ft south-southwest, 16-second period, energy 215, light cross-off winds. Not a standout, but a nice way to end the run.
If you want the best session, hit Monday the 31st of August morning. That 5ft west-northwest swell in clean cross-off winds is the most size and quality we’ll see. Water’s warm, the point will be working, and the crowds might show up, but it’s worth it.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
