The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks. We're looking at a pretty slow start, so don't rush out the door just yet. The early part of the run is full of small, underwhelming surf, but there's a bit of a pulse building towards the end of the first week and into the second.
First up, we have to talk about the water. Over at Campus Point, the water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's very unusual, and honestly, it feels like bathwater out there.
The first few days are a grind. Thursday the 20th through to Tuesday the 25th of August are all about tiny, knee-high waves. The swell is hovering around 1.0ft to 2ft from the SSW, with periods mostly in the 13 to 14-second range. The combined energy is weak, sitting between 109 and 208, so there's just no grunt behind it. The wind is light and mostly cross-off or cross, so the surface will be clean, but you'll be scratching for anything to ride. Honestly, it's not worth paddling out unless you're desperate for a float.
Then we get a little bump on Wednesday the 26th. The swell picks up to 2ft in the morning and 3ft in the afternoon from the south, with the period holding around 13-14 seconds. The energy jumps into the moderate range at 366 and 476. Light, cross-off winds keep it clean. This is the first window where you'll actually get a few proper waves, but it's still on the small side.
Thursday the 27th sees a bit more size, with 4ft swell from the south. The morning has a bit of a cross breeze, but the afternoon cleans up nicely with light cross-off winds. The energy is strong at 655 and 586. This is a solid session for the average surfer.
Friday the 28th of August is a bit of a drop-off, but the afternoon session cleans up with 2ft swell from the SSW and light cross-off winds. The energy is still moderate at 333. Good for a quick session.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th is a bit of a frustration. The swell sticks around 2ft to 2ft from the SSW, but the wind goes cross-shore, creating small ripples. The energy is moderate (300-371), but the surface quality isn't as good. The Sunday afternoon of the 30th does clean up nicely with cross-off winds, making it a better option.
The start of the new week, Monday the 31st, is a good option. Clean, light winds and 2ft swell from the SSW with 271 energy. Not big, but clean.
After that, we hit a bit of a lull again on the 1st and 2nd of September with small, weak swell, but then we get a real standout on the 3rd of September. Thursday the 3rd brings a 8ft WNW swell in the afternoon. The period is short at 6 seconds, so it's a bit of a disorganized, choppy mess, but the energy is strong at 593. The winds are light and cross-off, so it'll be clean. This is a big day, but the short period means it'll be a bit of a handful and probably only for the experienced crew. Friday the 4th of September settles down a bit with 5ft to 5ft WNW swell, moderate energy, and clean conditions. That's a solid finish to the outlook.
The standout here is the afternoon of Thursday the 3rd of September. The 8ft WNW swell, even with the short period, is the biggest, punchiest swell we see. For the more consistent and clean options, the afternoons of Wednesday the 26th, Thursday the 27th, and Friday the 4th of September are your best bets.
Rusty.
