The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s how the surf’s stacking up for the next couple of weeks at Campus Point.
Alright, straight up – this is a lean run. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, mediocre conditions with only a few brief windows where it’s worth paddling out. The first decent moment isn’t until Tuesday morning, August 18th. For the most part, we’re looking at knee-high windswell.
Campus Point is a point break, fairly exposed with a cross-off wind preference from the north-west. The water’s sitting at 70°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – nearly 7°F above average, which feels more like midsummer.
Tuesday August 18th morning brings the best of a weak run: the swell bumps up a little to around 3ft from the WNW, but the period is a short 8 seconds – so it’s a bit of a jumbled, weak windswell. Combined swell energy is moderate at 225. Winds are light cross-off from the WSW, so the face will be clean but the waves won’t have much push. It’s surfable but ordinary. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell drops to 2ft from the SSW, but the period stretches to 16 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell, which at a point break like this will produce clean, lined-up waves. The combined energy is moderate (317) and conditions are actually good. This is the only real standout: small but clean, glassy-style conditions with that long-period energy peeling nicely along the point. A fun little session if you’re not after size.
Wednesday August 19th is similar – small, clean, and surfable both morning and afternoon with 2ft from the SSW at 15 to 16 seconds (energy 281 / 273). Light WSW wind keeps it tidy. Again, not big, but the quality is there.
After that, it fades out. From Thursday 20th through to Saturday 29th August, we see a whole lot of nothing special – swell drops to 1ft or 2ft, some days are just poor with cross-shore wind messing it up. The energy stays below 200 most sessions. The morning of Saturday 29th August finally shows a flicker: 2ft from the SSW at 15 seconds, combined energy 279, light cross-off wind, and “expect good surf conditions.” But then the afternoon gets blown out by a 12 mph W cross-off.
Overall, if you’re keen, aim for the Tuesday 18th afternoon or Wednesday 19th – they’re the only proper clean, glassy little gems in a two-week stretch of flatness. The rest is either too small, too short-period, or just ordinary. Crowds are often a thing here, so expect company even on the small days.
Rusty.
