Alright, let’s get into it. Ol’ Rusty here, lookin’ at what’s on the cards for our local stretch.
To be straight with you, the first few days are flat as a pancake. We’ve got a real slow start. The first day where there’s even a whisper of a surfable wave is Monday, July 6th, but even then it’s just marginal, with tiny 2ft SSW swell. Honestly, nothin’ to get excited about until a bit later.
The real turning point looks like Wednesday, July 8th afternoon. That’s when the swell starts to show some teeth. We see a bump up to about 5ft from the WNW, with only an 8-second period, so it’s short-period windswell, not the cleanest groundswell, but the wind is light and cross-offshore from the W, which should keep things clean. The combined swell energy is moderate to strong (630). This is the first session that feels like it’s worth paddling out for. The break is Pescaderos, which is fairly consistent and beginner-friendly, but with the swell size just over 5ft, it might be a touch too much for the real newbies. It’s a pretty exposed spot, and the swell direction is WNW, which isn’t the absolute optimum (WSW), but it’s workable.
The next standout, and the one that might be the pick of the whole period, is Monday, July 13th afternoon. The swell is about 4ft from the WNW with a short 8-second period, but here’s the magic: it’s glassy. Slight air, no wind, clean as a whistle. That’s a rare treat. The combined swell energy is moderate (363), and the conditions are calling for “expect good surf conditions.” For a spot like Pescaderos, that’s about as good as it gets in this window. The morning of that same day is also glassy, but with a smaller 3ft swell. If you can only get one session, aim for the Monday arvo.
After that, the swell backs off again into the second week. There are a few afternoons – like Thursday, July 16th and Friday, July 17th – where the swell is tiny (2-2ft) but the wind goes cross-offshore and clean. Those are great for a longboard or a foiler, but not for a proper shortboard session. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit might feel a bit more comfortable than usual for July.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day look, the best on offer is the Wednesday afternoon, July 8th and the glassy Monday afternoon, July 13th. Everything else is small, and a lot of it is just poor. Don’t hold your breath on anything past that first week unless you’re happy with knee-high slop.
Rusty.
