The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what we’ve got for Pescaderos. It’s a fairly exposed spot, works best with a swell from the WSW, and it’s a beginner-friendly wave that’s fairly consistent.
To be honest, the next week and a bit is a bit of a struggle. The surf is small, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, with a long period swell around 14 to 19 seconds. That kind of long period groundswell can be a bit too straight for a beach break like this, and the wind is pretty much always cross or cross-off, so it’s not looking clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year. The combined swell energy is mostly moderate (around 128 to 242), but it’s just not producing anything rideable. We’re looking at a real dry spell from the start right through to the 27th of August, with nothing but "poor surf conditions" or "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" on a couple of afternoons.
The first real glimmer comes on the afternoon of Friday the 28th of August. The swell picks up to 1ft from the SSW with a very long period of 20 seconds and the energy jumps to 343 (moderate). The wind goes cross-off at 9 mph, and the call is "expect good surf conditions". That’s the best day of the first week, and the standout by a long way. That long period will mean proper groundswell lines, and with that clean wind, it’ll be worth a look for a few mellow ones. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have a few others on it.
After that, we drift back into marginal stuff with small swell until we hit the afternoon of Tuesday the 1st of September. That’s the second standout. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the WNW, period is a short 9 seconds, but the energy is 309 (moderate) and the wind is a light cross-off at 6 mph. Clean conditions again, and the call is "expect good surf conditions". It’s still small, but that’s the best size we’ve seen.
The second week stays small and marginal. The afternoon of Wednesday the 2nd of September sees the biggest swell of the whole run at 5ft from the WNW, but the period is short at 9 seconds, the wind is a moderate 12 mph cross-off, and it’s only a "marginal" call. It’s a bit of a nothing burger for most of the second week, with small swell and cross winds. There’s no real standout after the 1st of September.
So, if you’re keen, pencil in the afternoon of Friday the 28th of August for the cleanest, longest period waves, and the afternoon of Tuesday the 1st of September for the slightly bigger, cleaner but shorter period stuff. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
