The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Pescaderos. It’s a quiet stretch, beginner-friendly, but we’re looking at a pretty drawn-out stretch of flat or marginal conditions before anything really starts to shape up. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
Things start off on Wednesday, August 19th, with tiny waves around 2ft from the SSW, and a long period of 15-16 seconds. That’s a groundswell, but it’s weak – combined energy is only around 277 to 302 (moderate). The wind is light and cross, so the surface is okay, but there’s just not enough push for a proper ride. Thursday and Friday drop off even more, swell dropping to 1-2ft, and the conditions are poor. It’s a bit of a flat spell, with only a few days where the waves are even surfable, but nothing you’d get excited about.
We finally get a bit of a pulse on Saturday, August 29th. The afternoon looks promising: clean conditions with a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the W at 10 mph, and the swell picks up to 2ft from the SSW, period 16 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 440 (moderate), and the guidance says good surf. It’s still small, but the wind is right, and it’s clean. This is the standout window for the whole outlook – Saturday afternoon, August 29th, at Pescaderos. The swell direction is SSW, which is close to the optimum WSW, so it’s angled well.
Sunday, August 30th, offers similar conditions but with a bit more wind in the afternoon – 12 mph from the W, still cross-off, so it’s clean. Swell is 2ft from the SSW, period 15s, energy around 450 (moderate). It’s a solid follow-up day.
Then we get into September with a bit more size. On Monday, August 31st, the afternoon sees a 7ft swell from the WNW, but it’s a short period of 6 seconds – so it’s going to be a bit messy and choppy, more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers. The energy is 507 (strong), but the quality is marginal. September 1st afternoon is better: 5ft from the WNW, period 6 seconds, with clean cross-off wind, and rated as good surf. Same for the morning of September 3rd – 4ft from the WNW, period 9s, clean cross-off, good conditions.
Overall, if you’re a beginner, the small, clean windows around August 29th and 30th are your best bet. For more experienced surfers, the bigger but short-period swells in early September might offer something, but don’t expect magic. Keep an eye on that Saturday the 29th – that’s the pick of the run.
