The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you — the next couple of weeks at Pipe are shaping up as a real shocker. We’re talking about a flat spell that stretches from now, right through to the end of the outlook. Don’t get your hopes up.

The first session worth a mention isn’t until Saturday morning, August 15th. Even then, it’s a marginal call at best. You’ll be looking at a tiny 3ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-onshore from the SW at 6 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. The swell period is 16 seconds, which is a proper long-period groundswell — that would usually mean some punch, but there’s just not enough size. Combined wave energy is only moderate, coming in at 393. The water is way warmer than normal for this time of year at over 72°, so no worries about a winter wetsuit, but you’ll be doing more floating than surfing.

Things don’t improve. Monday morning, August 17th, is another so-so option with 2ft SSW swell, but it’s onshore wind again. Same story on Tuesday morning, August 18th, with a 2ft SSW swell and a light cross-shore wind from the south — at least that’s a bit cleaner, but it’s tiny. Wednesday morning, August 19th, offers a similar 2ft SSW swell with a cross-shore breeze from the SSE at 9 mph, so again, slight cross-chop but rideable if you’re desperate.

There’s a glimmer way out in the forecast — Monday morning, August 24th sees a 1ft SW swell with a long 18-second period and light onshore wind. It’s marginal. And Tuesday morning, August 25th, a 2ft SW swell with a light cross-onshore from the south. Small.

Honestly, the only standout — and I use that word loosely — is Saturday morning, August 15th, but it’s not worth a drive. For a break like Pipe (a reef setup that rarely breaks in these conditions), this is a dire run. It’s inconsistent on a good day, so this blank spell is rough but not totally unusual. With a consistent onshore SW wind pattern and barely a ripple of swell, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.

Keep an eye on it, but for now, don’t bother waxing up. I wouldn’t hold my breath.
