The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about Rat Beach for the next couple of weeks. It’s a reef break, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ve got to pick your moments. The water’s about normal for this time of year.

I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: the next 16 days are mostly a bust. There’s a long stretch of nothing until the morning of Wednesday, July 16th. That morning, you’re looking at a tiny 1ft swell from the SW, with a 16-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, which is good for shape, but the combined energy is only moderate (175). The wind is offshore from the SE, so the surface will be clean. It’s surfable, but just barely. You’ll be on a longboard.

The morning of Thursday, July 17th is pretty much the same: 1ft SW swell, 14-second period, clean offshore wind from the SE, but the wave energy is weak (87). Again, small and clean.

The one day that stands out is the morning of Monday, July 28th. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the SW, with a 18-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong 468. That’s a real difference. The wind is light and cross-shore from the SW, so it’ll be a bit textured, but for this inconsistent spot, that’s the best you’re going to get. 3ft might be a bit much for a total beginner on a reef, but it’s a proper wave. The afternoon of the 28th also has a bit of size, but the wind is more cross-shore and the conditions are more marginal.

The rest of the period is flat, too windy, or just poor. The morning of Sunday, July 26th is glassy, but with a 1ft swell and weak energy (88), it’s a lake.

So, to be honest, it’s a pretty bleak outlook. The first week is a total loss. The second week offers a few clean, small windows, with the morning of Monday, July 28th being the only real highlight. It’s a rough run for this break.
