Alright my friends, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's cookin'.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We've got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, so don't rush to wax your board just yet. The first real opportunity doesn't show up until Wednesday morning, July 15th, and even then it's a small one. Before that, from now through to Tuesday the 14th, it's mostly onshore or cross-onshore breezes messing up a tiny swell, and the wave energy is weak, barely hitting 312 (combined energy) at the start. You'd be fighting chop for nothing.
Let's talk about Wallys (our only spot in the guide). The water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is a whopping 4°F above normal for this time of year – that's much warmer than we're used to, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
Here’s how it plays out. Monday morning the 6th we see a tiny 2ft swell from the SSW, with a nice long 16-second period, but a light cross-onshore breeze kills it. The energy is weak at 312. The rest of that week is a write-off: dirty wind, poor surf conditions, and scores that say "paddle back in." The weekend of the 11th and 12th is the same story – small 2ft swell but cross-onshore winds and chop. The combined energy drops to around 213. We're in the doldrums.
Now, Wednesday morning, July 15th, is our one true standout, and it's a special one. The swell drops to just 1ft from the SW, but hold on – the wind goes glassy. That's right, glassy conditions with a super long 18-second period from the SW (which is almost the optimum direction from the WSW for this point break). The energy is still low at 166, but for a point break like Wallys, that long period groundswell will wrap in and produce clean, lined-up waves. It's only for advanced surfers, and it's an inconsistent break, so you'll have to be patient, but the quality of the wave itself on that morning will make it worth the wait. The afternoon glass is gone, replaced by a cross-onshore.
After that, we slide back into the poor stuff. Nothing worth mentioning until Sunday, July 19th. That morning brings a bump in swell to 3ft from the SSE, with a solid 15-second period and the combined energy jumping to 559 (moderate energy). However, the wind is cross-shore. It's a "marginal" call. The afternoon sees a 3ft S swell with energy at 621, but it's onshore. For a point break, this could still offer some fun waves for experts if you can find a clean pocket, but don't bet the farm on it.
The long-range stuff into the third week is all small and messy with cross-onshores again. The one bright spot is that Wednesday morning, July 15th. Mark your calendar. It's not a big day, but it's a clean one.
Remember, if you're a beginner, anything over 5ft is a no-go, and over 8ft is experts only. We don't see that here, so it's safe for everyone size-wise, but the conditions are the problem.
Rusty, signing off.
