Westward Beach/Point Dume Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. The only break that’s really in the conversation is Westward Beach/Point Dume, and even then, it’s not looking like it’s gonna be firing any time soon. The water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

We’ve got a long gap here with hardly anything to get excited about. From the start of the period right through to the end of the first week, the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly cross-onshore, making for messy, weak conditions. Saturday the 1st of August might offer a tiny glimmer with a 3 ft S swell at 13 seconds, but the cross-on wind from the south at 10 km/h is gonna keep it bumpy and small. The combined energy is only 258, which is weak, so don’t expect much push.

It stays pretty flat and poor through the next several days. Swell heights drop to 1 ft and the period is short, with the combined energy slumping into the double digits or low triple digits. The wind is light at times, but it’s never really offshore, and the waves are just too small and weak to bother with.

There’s a bit of a pulse around the 7th of August – Friday morning – with a 2 ft SSW swell arriving with a very long period of 19 seconds. That’s groundswell energy, and the combined energy jumps to 307. But – and it’s a big but – the period is so long that at a beach break like this, those waves are gonna break pretty straight and be hard to get a good wall out of. Plus the wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the SSE at 15 km/h, so it’s far from clean. This is more of a spot for the experienced crew who know how to work a long-period swell, but even then, it’s marginal.

The same pattern repeats for the next few days – a long-period SSW swell around 2 ft, but the wind stays cross-onshore and the energy is moderate at best. Nothing is really coming together for a proper session. The 15th of August, a Saturday morning, shows a 2 ft SSW swell with 17-second period and 311 combined energy, but again, the wind is cross-onshore from the south at 10 km/h, and the guidance says the optimum direction is SW, so we’re not getting the best angle.

Honestly, the whole 16-day window is a tough one for surfers. If you’re determined to get wet, the best-looking option is probably the 7th of August morning or the 15th of August morning, but those are barely a 1 out of 10 on the score sheet. The waves are small, the wind is wrong, and the quality is poor. If you’re into kiteboarding, the cross-onshore breeze and small, weak waves might actually be more appealing than trying to paddle-surf this stuff.

So, I’d say don’t hold your breath. The breaks are fairly consistent around here, so it won’t stay this flat forever, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
