The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, lookin’ at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, the start is a real slow grind, and if you're itching for a wave, you're gonna have to be patient. The water is sitting at a balmy 71°F which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year at TCs—a full 5°F above average, so you might not even need a spring suit.
Kicking off from Sunday, August 23rd, we've got nada. Tiny little 1ft SW slop with a long 19-second period but mixed with messy cross-onshore breezes. Combined swell energy is weak, only hitting 199. It's a write-off all the way through the end of August. Every morning and afternoon is just poor surf conditions—either choppy, wind-rippled, or cross-shore junk. That 2ft–2ft stuff that pops up mid-week is still plagued by onshore winds and weak period combo energy around 200-275. Not worth paddling out.
We finally see a glimmer on Saturday, August 29th with the morning showing 3ft from the SSW and a light offshore breeze. It's still marginal at best, with a score that barely registers, but the direction is starting to line up with what TCs likes—SW. The combined energy is starting to build to 480, so there's *something* moving out there.
Then we hit the Sunday, August 30th morning—and this is the first real moment of hope. It's glassy, dead flat wind from the SW at just 3 mph. The swell is 3ft from the SSW at 15 seconds—proper long-period groundswell. This will wrap in nicely as a clean, small reef wave. It's not gonna be huge, but if you want a longboard or a fun fish, this is your window. However, that afternoon the wind swings onshore and the period drops to 8 seconds, so the session is short-lived.
The first week of September is still mostly a battle with cross-onshore winds keeping things choppy, but the combined swell energy starts getting serious. By Thursday, September 4th, the SSW groundswell is pushing 3ft with a 17-second period and the combined energy is 590 in the morning. Still just a "marginal" call due to the wind, but if it cleans up, that's a lot of water moving.
The standout of this whole outlook has to be Saturday, September 6th, morning. We get a 3ft SSE groundswell at 15 seconds with a cross-shore wind. The combined energy hits 639, and for TCs, SSE is slightly off the optimum, but it's still a solid, clean-feeling groundswell. The offshore direction is holding steady, and for an advanced reef break like this, that's the ticket.
Beyond that, heading into the second week, Monday, September 7th delivers the biggest heights we see: 4ft from the S at 14 seconds, with combined energy climbing to 682. But the winds are stubbornly cross-onshore again, so it's a bit of a tease. Bigger numbers but messy conditions.
Overall, it's a slow start with a couple of brief windows. The glassy Sunday the 30th is your best early bet for a clean, small wave, and if you can wait, the morning of Saturday September 6th looks the most promising for a proper session at TCs. Keep your eyes peeled, because the energy is building, and the forecasts can change.
Rusty.
