The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m lookin’ at TCs, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The setup is a sheltered reef break that needs a good SW swell and clean conditions to really fire, but for the next couple of weeks, the wind is just not playing ball.
Right now, through the second half of July and into the first week of August, the swell is small and messy. The first couple of days have a tiny 1ft swell from the SSW, but the wind is cross-on, making it choppy and pretty much unrideable. The combined energy is weak (131), so there’s just no power in the water. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a bit of a weird one for the locals.
We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions here. The swell stays tiny and the wind stays cross-on or onshore for days. The best you’ll see is a bit of a bump in energy around the 18th and 19th of July, with the swell climbing to 2ft and the combined energy hitting into the moderate range (252 to 394), but the wind is still crap. It’s a real frustrating period.
The first real sign of life shows up on Friday, 24th July. The swell picks up to 3ft in the morning, with a long period of 14 seconds from the South, and the wind goes light and onshore. The combined energy jumps to 621 (strong). It’s still only a "marginal" call, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The afternoon gets a bit wilder with 4ft S swell and a 16-second period, but the wind swings cross and gets moderate, which will mess it up a bit with a cross-chop (energy 1091).
The standout, if you can call it that, is Saturday, 25th July morning. The swell hits 5ft from the South, with a 15-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, and it’s got a lot of energy (1424). The wind is a gentle cross-on from the WSW, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but it’s the biggest and most powerful day of the whole period. This is a session for experienced surfers only, as it’s a bit too big for beginners. The long period means it’ll have long lulls between sets, so the paddle out might be easier, but it’s a reef, so watch out. The afternoon of the same day is still big (5ft) but the wind picks up, making it choppy.
After that, the swell drops back down to 2ft for the 26th and 27th, with a long period again (19 seconds), but the wind stays cross-on. The energy is still strong (742), but the quality is poor. For the rest of the period into the end of July and early August, it’s the same story: small swell, cross-on winds, and poor conditions.
To be honest, this place is a desert for paddle surfing for most of the next 16 days. The wind is just relentless in the wrong direction. If you’re a kite surfer, the set-up on the 25th might look interesting, but for a regular surfer, it’s a long wait for a very average window.
