The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Swamis. Let’s be real — the next week and a half is a bit of a grind. We’ve got runs of small, weak swell and onshore winds that just won’t let up for a while. The good news? There’s a pulse of proper energy trying to build towards the end of the run, but you’ll need patience.
The surf kicks off Sunday the 23rd of August with a tiny 2ft southwest groundswell, but it’s a long-period 19-second job. That would be a dream anywhere else, but here the conditions are poor, with an onshore westerly breeze making a mess of it. The combined swell energy is moderate (402) but the water is a balmy 73°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 5° above average. That’s a nice little bonus for sitting out there waiting for a clean one.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are more of the same — tiny 2ft to 2ft southwest swell, onshore or cross-onshore wind, and the wave comment is poor. The combined energy dips then jumps around (353 to 414), but it’s all small and messy. No real reason to paddle out unless you’re desperate.
Wednesday the 26th is the first glimmer. The swell picks up to 4ft from the south, with a 12-second period. The combined energy is moderate (757). The wind goes cross-shore in the morning — that’s a major positive. It’s still not perfect, with the comment calling it marginal, but that’s the best we’ve seen. Thursday and Friday are similar, with slightly smaller swell (4ft to 3ft) but still that south energy. The wind stays light, so it’s not blown out, just not really firing. The energy is hanging in the moderate range (448 to 603).
The weekend of the 29th and 30th of August keeps the marginal vibe. Swell sits around 4ft to 4ft from the south-southwest, with a 15-16 second period. The combined energy is climbing — 868 and 891 on Saturday. That’s a sign of the bigger stuff to come. But the wind is still cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. A bit frustrating.
Then we hit a bit of a lull from Monday the 31st of August into Tuesday the 1st of September. Swell drops back to 3ft to 3ft, energy drops, and the wind is still cross-onshore. Poor to marginal. A gap of a few days where it’s just not worth it.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Thursday the 3rd of September, the swell starts to build again. By the afternoon, we’ve got 3ft from the south-southwest, but the period is back up to 19 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (1075). That’s a serious groundswell. The wind is offshore (WNW) and light. That’s the combo we’ve been waiting for. The morning of Friday the 4th of September is even better: 4ft of SSW swell, 17 seconds, and the combined energy is very strong (1212). The wind is offshore at 6 mph. This is the standout of the whole forecast period. This is the one to circle. The best waves on offer, with clean conditions and proper energy.
The rest of the second week stays solid, with swell holding around 4ft to 5ft, and periods of 14-16 seconds. The energy is strong to very strong all the way through (1061 to 1759). But the wind is a problem — it’s cross-onshore from the SW or SSW, spoiling the shape. By Sunday the 6th of September, the swell hits 7ft in the afternoon, but it’s coming with a moderate cross-onshore breeze. That’s big, but it’s going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. For experts only, and even then, it’s not the best call. The session to truly aim for is Friday the 4th of September morning.
Rusty out.
