The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you. The next couple of weeks at Blacks Beach are a bit of a mixed bag, and we're in for a long wait before anything really gets going. Let's break it down.
We start off in a pretty poor state. The water is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a weird one, but it won't help the waves. The first week is a grind. From Wednesday morning the 15th through to Sunday the 19th, it's mostly messy, cross-shore chop with tiny, weak swells. The combined energy is way down, barely cracking 200-300 (moderate wave energy) on the best days, and the winds are all over the place, keeping things choppy and ugly. You're not missing anything.
The tide and swell start to show a little life on the 19th, with a jump in swell height to 6ft, but it's still just a marginal call. The wind is offshore, so that's a plus, but the swell period is a bit short, and the overall energy is still nothing to write home about.
Then we hit a bit of a lull again. The waves don't really clean up. The best run looks like it's going to be late in the second week. Mark your calendars for the 25th of July – that Saturday. There's a pulse of SSW swell that hits 7ft, and while the combined energy jumps up to 1917 (strong wave energy), the wind is cross-on from the WNW, which is going to put a bit of a chop on the face. Still, at 7ft, that's big enough to get the heart pumping, but it's also getting into the territory where it's only really for the experts. The swell period is a middling 13 seconds, so it's not a proper groundswell, but it'll have some punch.
After that, the following week from the 26th into the 29th drops back to a more manageable 3ft to 4ft, with light offshore winds on the 27th and 28th. That's your best bet for clean, fun waves. The swell direction is SSW, which is good for this spot, and the periods are long (17-18 seconds), meaning better shaped, more powerful waves with longer lulls. The energy is moderate to strong (1033-1105), so it's not a full-on bomb, but it's a nice, clean, long-period groundswell.
So, the standout? Honestly, for the whole window, there's no single day that screams "world-class." The best bet is a toss-up between the bigger, but wind-affected, swell on the 25th, and the cleaner, more manageable conditions on the 27th and 28th. If I had to pick one, I'd say the 27th and 28th of July – the waves are a solid 4-4ft, the wind is offshore and light, and the long period from the SSW will give you some proper, clean walls. It's not a massive day, but it's the most likely to give you a good, clean session. Get on it.
Rusty.
