The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here.

We’ve got a waiting game on our hands at Blacks Beach. The next 16 days are looking pretty flat, so don’t hold your breath for anything decent just yet. The first few days are a total write-off with tiny swell and poor conditions, but we do have a few pulses of energy late in the run that could be worth keeping an eye on. For the first week or so, you’re basically looking at knee-high dribble with light offshore winds. It’s clean, but there’s just nothing to ride. The water temp is sitting at 21°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’s not freezing while you’re sitting there waiting.

The first real sign of life appears around Wednesday the 26th of August. We get a jump in swell from the SSW, bumping up to 3 ft early, and then pushing to 5 ft by the afternoon. The combined energy is moderate to strong, hitting 619 and then 1052, but the period is short at 13 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be pristine. The morning of the 27th looks cleaner with a cross-shore breeze and a 4 ft SSW swell, but the quality is still marginal.

The standout is shaping up to be the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August and then into the weekend. On Thursday afternoon, we’ve got 5 ft of SSW swell with a 14-second period and light cross-onshore wind. Combined energy is strong at 1048. It’s the first real push of size and power, and while the wind isn’t perfect, it’s manageable. For experienced surfers, this is where it gets interesting. The water will be a bit jumbled, but there’s enough there to make it worthwhile.

Then, Saturday the 29th of August is the pick of the whole run. The morning has 4 ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, cross-shore breeze, and combined energy of 994. The afternoon bumps up to 4 ft, 16 seconds, and energy of 1109. That long period is a classic groundswell – it’ll wrap nicely into Blacks Beach, but be mindful that a long-period SSW swell at an exposed beach break like this can get a bit shifty and close out. Still, for the advanced crew, this is the best chance for a proper session. It’s a clean, offshore wind at 6 mph in the morning, so the conditions are about as good as we’re going to get.

After that, it drops off again. Monday the 31st sees a return to small, weak surf, and the rest of the run stays marginal. There’s a brief uptick on the morning of the 4th of September with 5 ft from the WNW, but the period is short at 9 seconds, so it’ll be fat and messy.

Overall, the first week is a bust. The end of August and very start of September offer a few clean, punchy days if you’re patient. The real highlight is Saturday the 29th – that’s the one to circle on the calendar. It won’t be epic, but it’s the best we’ve got.

Rusty.
