Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got for Blacks Beach.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks aren’t shaping up to be a classic run. The surf is small and the conditions are messy. We’re looking at a long stretch where the good stuff just isn’t there. For the first week-plus, from Friday morning right through to the end of the second week, the waves stay tiny, mostly knee to waist-high at best. The real problem is the wind. It swings around from the west, then west-northwest, and later settles into a south-southwest cross-onshore flow that just chops everything up. It’s frustrating because there’s some long-period groundswell in the water, with periods up to 18 seconds, but the size is just too small to do anything with it.
The water temp is running a touch warmer than normal at 69°, which is nice, but it’s not enough to save the surf.
Let's break it down day by day. Friday morning, July 3rd, has a 3ft south-southwest swell with a long 16-second period, but the wind is onshore from the west at 9 mph and the overall wave energy is weak (408). The report is clear: poor surf. Friday afternoon is the same story. Saturday the 4th is a little worse, with a cross-onshore wind adding plenty of chop to the 3ft swell.
Sunday the 5th through to Wednesday the 8th shows marginal conditions with that tiny swell size. On the morning of Tuesday the 7th, we get a 3ft south-southwest swell with a nice 18-second period and a light offshore wind from the west-southwest at 6 mph. The combined energy jumps up to 837, which is actually moderate. That’s the closest we get to something surfable. The waves would be super clean but they’d be breaking real straight on the beach, and with a period that long, you’d need a point or reef to really make the most of it. Still, it’s a marginal call at best.
From Thursday the 9th onward, it’s back to poor conditions. The wind turns more consistently cross-onshore and choppy, and the swell drops back to 3ft or less. By the second week, around July 13th and 14th, the swell bottoms out at 1ft to 2ft with energy readings falling to around 129 to 254. That’s nothing to get excited about.
There is one small blip on Saturday, July 18th. We get a 3ft south-west swell with an 18-second period, light west winds at 6 mph, and a moderate combined energy of 496. It’s the best looking day in the entire run, but even then the forecast is poor. It might offer a few clean, lined-up waves if you’re happy to surf small, but it’s not a standout.
Look, if you’re a kiter, this stretch of beach might look more interesting than it does for us with paddles, especially when that cross-onshore wind blows. For a surfer, it’s a lean couple of weeks. Hang in there.
Rusty.
