The Lowdown

Hey, Rusty here again. Let's talk about the same stretch, but in feet and miles per hour.

Straight up, we are in for a rough ride. The next two weeks are lookin’ mostly dead for our local surf. Plenty of days with the scores comin’ back zero, and that’s never a good sign.

Kickin’ off Sunday the 16th, it’s a total washout. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the SSW with a long 15-second period – so there’s real groundswell energy in the water (489 combined energy) – but the wind is a cross-on from the WNW at 9 mph, and the report is “poor surf conditions.” That’s the headline. The water is a warm 73°F, which is about 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a bath – but it doesn’t help the waves.

That same story keeps on goin’. Monday the 17th, Tuesday the 18th, Wednesday the 19th, Thursday the 20th – all of ‘em: small swell, onshore wind, and “poor.” The wave energy bounces around, like Tuesday morning we saw 418 combined energy, but with a 2ft wave and a light onshore breeze, it’s not worth paddlin’ out for.

We get a tiny flicker of hope on Friday the 21st morning. The combined energy drops to 248 and the swell is only 2ft, but the call is “marginal.” Wind’s a light cross-on from the WSW at 6 mph – not great, but at least it’s not a gale. That’d be a skunk session unless you’re desperate. Saturday the 22nd morning is even smaller at 2ft, but by the afternoon we get a bump to 3ft and 404 combined energy, still only “marginal.”

The rest of the first week and the start of the second is a real grind. Day after day of tiny, messy swells and poor marks. There is no standout. The only spot we got is North Torrey Pines – a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent beach break that’s fully exposed. But the swell’s comin’ from the SSW, and this spot wants a W swell to really work. The offshore wind direction here is E, and we’re gettin’ everything else.

Even lookin’ way out to Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, it’s the same deal. Swell around 3ft to 3ft, cross-on wind, and poor conditions. There’s a bit of energy on the 29th – 635 combined energy with a 3ft swell – but that cross-on wind from the SW at 6 mph just chops it up.

So what’s the best on offer? Honestly, there isn’t one. Not a single day gets past a “marginal” score. If you’ve got a log and low expectations, maybe the 21st or 22nd gives you somethin’ to do, but don’t get your hopes up. It’s a flat spell. For a spot that’s usually pretty consistent, it’s a quiet patch, but these things turn around. Forecasts change.

Rusty.
