Table - best surf conditions forecast for North Torrey Pines over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s get real about North Torrey Pines. It’s gonna be a bit of a rough ride for the most part. We’ve got a long stretch of weak, messy conditions to start, but there’s a flicker of hope late in the window if you’re patient.
The first real surf to paddle out for is on Wednesday afternoon, July 8th. We’re looking at a modest 4ft swell from the SSW, but the period is a lovely 16 seconds – that’s some proper groundswell energy. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting at 759, so don’t expect a lot of push. The wind is light and offshore out of the West, which will keep it clean. The water is sitting at 71°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a springsuit. The downside? The forecast calls it marginal, and it is a beginner spot, so it’s not going to be epic. Still, for a Wednesday afternoon session, it’s the best we’ve got for a while.
After that, things go south. From Thursday, July 9th, through to Saturday, July 18th, it’s a wasteland. The wind is mostly cross-on or cross-shore, the swell drops to 2ft to 3ft, and the period is all over the place. The wave energy goes from 737 down to 192, and every single session is labelled as poor or marginal. There’s nothing to get excited about for nearly a week and a half.
Then, finally, things start to wake up on Sunday, July 19th. The morning shows a 4ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1458 – that’s moderate energy, finally. The wind is light and cross-on, so it’ll have a bit of texture, but it’s a huge step up. By the afternoon, the swell drops a touch to 3ft, but the period stretches to 18 seconds, and the energy is still strong at 1112. It’s still marginal, but this is the window to watch.
The standout, if you can hold out, is Monday, July 20th. The morning sees a solid 6ft SSW swell, with a 14-second period and a healthy 1388 energy. The wind is a light cross-on. By the afternoon, the swell sits at 6ft, the wind shifts to a clean offshore from the West, and the energy is still 1197. This is the best combo of size and clean wind on offer. That 6ft is getting into the territory where it might be too much for beginners, but for anyone intermediate and up, this is the day to circle on the calendar. Just keep in mind that long period groundswell like this can break a bit straight on a beach break, but North Torrey Pines can handle it.
After that, the swell drops back down through the 21st and 22nd, and it fades into poor conditions again.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. Don’t bother. The real action is Sunday, July 19th and especially Monday, July 20th. That Monday is the pick of the bunch – clean offshore wind, solid chest to head-high swell, and decent energy. It’s a long way out, so the forecast could shift, but right now, that’s the one to aim for.
Rusty.
