Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for North Torrey Pines over the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you – it's not the most exciting outlook I've seen. The swell is small and the wind is often messy, so we've got a long stretch of pretty average conditions before anything resembling a decent wave shows up.
The real kicker is that the first actual recommendation for a surf doesn't come until Sunday, July 5th. We're looking at a solid gap of no good surf from now until then. Even then, don't get your hopes up too much. On Sunday afternoon, we've got a tiny 2ft SSW groundswell with a very long 18 second period. The combined wave energy is weak (448), and while the wind is offshore from the WNW at 9 mph, the overall surf quality is described as "poor." The water temperature is running at a noticeably warm 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Moving into Monday, July 6th, the conditions are still marginal. Monday morning brings 3ft of SSW swell at 16 seconds, with the combined energy bumping up a bit to a moderate 529. The wind stays offshore from the W at 9 mph, but the forecast suggests marginal surf due to questionable tide. The afternoon is similar, with a 2ft SSW swell but a very long 20 second period and stronger energy of 741. Still, it's a marginal call.
Tuesday, July 7th, is more of the same. The morning sees 3ft of SSW swell at 18 seconds, with the energy climbing to 857. The offshore wind holds from the WSW at 9 mph. But again, it's described as marginal. The afternoon drops slightly to 3ft and 790 energy under offshore W winds.
Wednesday, July 8th, the wind shifts. Morning has a 4ft SSW swell at 16 seconds with strong energy at 945, but the wind turns cross-onshore from the SW at 9 mph, making it choppy. The afternoon gets a bit lighter with WSW winds at 6 mph, still cross-onshore, with 4ft swell and 766 energy. Still just marginal.
Thursday, July 9th, is cross-onshore all day with 3ft SSW swell at 16 seconds and moderate energy (724 in the morning, 677 in the afternoon). Still marginal, still not great.
From Friday, July 10th, right through to Tuesday, July 14th, the outlook turns to "poor." The swell drops down, the wind stays unfavourable, and there's just no quality on offer. Wednesday, July 15th, shows a brief flicker of marginal conditions with a tiny 1ft SW groundswell at 18 seconds, but the energy is weak at 258.
Finally, around Thursday, July 16th, we see the best option of the whole period, though it's still not a standout. Thursday morning has 4ft of short-period W windswell at just 8 seconds. The energy is moderate at 366. The wind is cross-onshore from the SW at 9 mph, creating choppy conditions. This is a beach break setup, and with a short, weak swell and onshore wind, it's going to be a bumpy mess – honestly, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell size is not too big, so beginners could still be out there, but the quality will be poor.
The rest of the run into late July is just small, weak, and often cross-onshore or offshore but with tiny swell. Nothing to get excited about. For an exposed beach break like North Torrey Pines, a blank run like this isn't unusual.
So, what's the call? There is no true standout here. The best you're looking at is the marginal window around Sunday, July 5th through Tuesday, July 7th, when the offshore winds will at least keep the surface clean, but the swell is small. The energy is moderate to strong for the size, thanks to the long groundswell periods, which means longer waits between sets. Surf the points or reefs if you can, as this long-period swell (over 15 seconds) will be breaking a bit too straight and fast for beach breaks.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay poor for long.
Rusty.
