The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for North Torrey Pines. It’s a bit of a slow start, so don’t be in a rush to get the wetsuit on just yet.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet period for this stretch of beach. The first few days are a write-off, with poor surf conditions and a light, cross-onshore breeze messing up what little bump there is. The swell is tiny, around 3ft, and the energy is just not there (476). It’s a beginner spot at the best of times, and right now, it’s not doing anyone any favours. This quiet spell stretches through the weekend and into the start of the new week.
There’s a glimmer of hope around the middle of the week, starting on Wednesday, July 24th. The swell starts to build, with a S swell pushing up to 5ft and a period of 13 seconds. The energy picks up to a solid moderate level (1293), and the wind is light and onshore, keeping things clean enough. It’s still marginal, but it’s the best we’ve seen so far. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The real standout – and I mean the only one worth getting excited about – is the week after. On Monday, July 27th, we’ve got a SW groundswell running at 5ft with a very long period of 19 seconds. The energy is pumping at (1784), and the wind is light and onshore, which is a huge plus for this beach break. That long period swell will have some real punch, but it might make the waves a bit straight and fat here at the beach. It’ll be a bit of a challenge, but for the more experienced surfer, it’s the best session on offer. At 5ft, it’s still manageable for a competent intermediate, but the power will be there.
The following day, Tuesday, July 28th, holds similar energy (1709) with a 5ft SSW swell, but the wind is a bit more cross-onshore, so it won’t be as clean. The spot is fairly consistent, but crowds are possible, especially on a day like this. After that, the swell starts to back off and fade away into the first few days of August, with conditions dropping back to poor.
Overall, it’s a long wait for a short window. The best bet is Monday, July 27th, with that long-period groundswell and light wind. Thursday, July 30th is a decent backup, but it’s a step down. Keep your expectations low for the rest of it.
Rusty.
