The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you—the outlook for North Torrey Pines over the next couple weeks is pretty grim. Honestly, if you’re looking for a proper surf session, this stretch is gonna disappoint. The first few days are a write-off: Monday 13 July afternoon with 2ft of weak S swell (combined energy 402) and onshore west wind. Tuesday and Wednesday morning are just as bad—poor conditions, small waves, choppy. You’d be wasting your time paddling out.
We finally get a glimmer of something on Wednesday 15 July afternoon—marginal, 2ft from the SW with a 16-second period (combined energy 309) and light onshore wind. Still, the wave quality is questionable. That’s the best we see for the first week. Thursday 16 July through Sunday 19 July is a mix of small, short-period windswell and cross-shore winds—not worth getting wet. The water temperature on the 13th is 72°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year—very unusual, but not exactly a consolation when the surf is flat and messy.
The only time the swell gets any real size is around Thursday 23 July and Friday 24 July. On the 23rd we’ve got 6ft of S swell (14-second period, combined energy 1393) and 7ft on the 23rd afternoon (energy 1622). That’s decent height, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is coming from the south, not the west which this place needs. With that size, it’s borderline for beginners—over 5ft, so keep that in mind. The period is 14 seconds, so it’s a groundswell but not super long. Still, the conditions are marginal at best; the scores only hit a 3 out of 10 on the 23rd morning. That’s your best bet, but it’s nothing to rave about. After that, the swell fades through the 28th, back to marginal knee-high stuff with cross-onshore breezes.
Honestly, for a break that’s usually fairly consistent, this run is poor. But forecasts can change, so don’t lose hope entirely. For now, I’d say keep an eye on the 23rd and 24th if you’re an expert looking for bigger, unclean waves—otherwise, wait for something better.
