The Lowdown

Right, mate, Rusty here, looking at our local stretch. It’s gonna be a real waiting game for the next week or so. We’ve got a whole lot of small, weak, and pretty average conditions to sit through before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year.

We’re looking at North Torrey Pines (Torrey Pines) mostly. Honestly, for the first five days or so, it’s a struggle. Thursday the 20th through to Tuesday the 25th, we’ve got swell heights barely scraping 3 ft, coming from the SSW with weak energy in the 200 to 500 range (combined swell energy). The wind is light but mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the word on the street is “poor surf conditions.” It’s not really worth the rubber.

Around Wednesday the 26th, there is a bit of a lift. The swell bumps up to 4 ft – 5 ft from the SSW, with period around 13 seconds and the combined energy jumps to over 1000 (1052-1182). That’s moderate energy. But the wind is a gentle cross-onshore breeze, making it fairly choppy. It’s still only a marginal call at best, maybe a little fun for a log if you’re desperate.

The real standout, or what passes for one in this flat spell, shapes up on Friday the 28th. The afternoon sees a long period SSW groundswell at 19 seconds, pushing 3 ft swell. That long period (over 15 seconds) will mean well-shaped, powerful lines, but at a beach break like North Torrey Pines, it might break a bit too straight. The combined energy is moderate at 955. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it could be reasonably clean. Crowds are always possible here.

After that, it fades again. Saturday the 29th has some similar energy (combined energy 1109) with 4 ft SSW swell and 16-second period, but the wind is light cross-on again. It’s all just a bit marginal.

The start of September looks very flat again, with tiny 2 ft – 3 ft swells and weak energy. There’s a little bump on Friday the 4th with a 5 ft WNW swell, but it’s only 9-second period (short period, weak energy). Not much to get excited about.

Overall, for the next 16 days, there are no true standouts. The best on offer is probably Friday the 28th afternoon, but even then, it’s for the patient surfer. For the level of surf on offer with the wind, this setup would honestly look more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on most days. Keep checking back, forecasts can change.

Rusty.
