Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for North Torrey Pines. I gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a bit of a tough one. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, but the surf quality is looking pretty flat and messy for the most part. There are no real standouts to get hyped about; it’s a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions.
We start off from Saturday the 4th of July, and it’s not pretty. The swell is tiny at 3 ft out of the SSW, with a period of 14 seconds. That longer-period groundswell would be nice if it had some size, but combined with a moderate wave energy of 478 and cross-onshore winds from the WNW at 9 mph, it’s choppy and weak. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year (about 4° above average), so the water feels nice, but the waves just aren’t there.
Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th keep the same pattern: tiny 2 ft to 3 ft SSW swell, onshore winds, and poor surf conditions. The energy does climb a bit on Monday afternoon, hitting 743, but it’s still a wind-affected mess. Tuesday the 7th sees a slight bump to 3 ft swell, with periods around 18 seconds, and the wind backs off to a lighter breeze at 6 mph. That cleaner window on Tuesday afternoon with onshore wind is the closest we get to something rideable, but it’s still marginal at best. For a break like North Torrey Pines that’s fairly consistent, this is a real bummer.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is more of the same. Swell heights hover around 3 ft to 4 ft, mostly from the SSW, but the wind stays cross-onshore from the SSW or SW, keeping it choppy. The wave energy fluctuates between 300 and 900, but it never translates into quality. On Wednesday the 8th morning, we see 4 ft at 16 seconds, but again, cross-onshore wind and small wind ripples ruin it. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th are repeats—poor surf, cross-onshore winds, and the swell just drifts away.
From July 11th onwards, it gets even smaller. The swell drops to 1 ft to 2 ft from the SW and SSW, with periods ranging from 13 to 18 seconds. The energy plummets, dropping to around 200-300. Winds are light and mostly onshore or cross-onshore, but there’s simply no power. The 13th of July offers a glimmer with a 2 ft S swell and a 13-second period, but it’s still marginal. The 18th and 19th of July see a small uptick in swell (3 ft to 3 ft) from the SW and S, with onshore winds and moderate energy (up to 893 on the 19th afternoon), but again, it’s just not clean enough to recommend.
Look, for a beach break like this, with the swell being so small and the wind mostly onshore or cross-onshore, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s no punch, no decent wave face. At a spot that’s fairly consistent, this stretch is unusually quiet. But forecasts change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long. Keep an eye on it, but don’t rush down.
Rusty.
