The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s get into it for North Torrey Pines.
Right now, the water temperature is sitting at 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – you’ll feel that little extra bit of warmth on your feet.
Honestly, the next week or so is pretty quiet. We’ve got small swell with some decent long-period energy coming in, but the wave comment keeps calling it poor. The first real chance to get a surf in won’t come until around Tuesday morning the 25th of August, and even then, it’s only marginal with a 2ft swell from the SW and a high period of 16 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (416). The winds are light and offshore, which is the main positive, but the size and quality just aren’t there for a standout.
Things start to get more interesting towards the end of the first week into the second. The real standout window looks like Thursday the 3rd of September into Friday the 4th of September. On Thursday afternoon, we see a 3ft SSW swell with a very long 20-second period, pushing the combined energy into strong territory (1025). Then Friday morning the 4th of September is the best on offer: a 5ft SSW groundswell with a 19-second period and a very high energy reading (2062). The wind is light cross-onshore, which is not perfect glass, but it’s light enough to keep things clean. The long period will make these waves steep and powerful, better suited for a longer board or a point break if you can find one, but this is a solid, promising swell.
Remember, though, this is a beginner-friendly break, and with the swell over 5ft on Friday, it might be pushing the limits for less experienced paddlers. Crowds can be a factor here sometimes, so get out early.
Beyond that, the second week looks a bit more mixed. The 6th of September brings a 6ft S swell, dropping in period to 15 seconds, with light cross-onshore breeze. The energy is still strong (1453) but the quality dips back to marginal.
So, the best bet is to keep an eye on that Thursday the 3rd and especially Friday the 4th of September. The rest of the window is pretty small or compromised, so don’t expect a whole lot for the next ten days.
Rusty.
