Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Torrey Pines State Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and quiet. We’ve got a long stretch of "poor surf conditions" until we hit the 6th of July, and even then, it’s only "marginal." The water temp is sitting at 69°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That's a nice thing for the wait, at least.
From Thursday the 2nd all the way through Sunday the 12th of July, it's mostly small, weak swell with combined energy readings mostly in the 400 to 500 range (moderate energy), and a lot of that time the wind is either on it or cross-on, making things choppy. It’s just not doing anything for us.
The only time things start to look slightly interesting is around Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th of July. On Monday morning we see the swell height hit 3 ft from the SSW with a long 16-second period, and energy bumps up to 557. By Monday afternoon that energy jumps to 667, still with a 20-second period on a 2 ft SSW swell. That’s a nice long groundswell, but it’s breaking pretty straight for a beach break like this. Tuesday the 7th morning shows 3 ft from the SSW with an 18-second period and energy at 880, but the wind is cross-on from the WSW at 9 mph, so it’s gonna be a bit choppy. Tuesday afternoon cleans up a bit with lighter 6 mph onshore wind and 3 ft swell.
For the best of a pretty average stretch, I’d point you to Monday the 6th afternoon. That 20-second period groundswell with 2 ft from the SSW and energy at 667 is about as good as it gets here in this window. Clean, light winds, and a bit of juice.
Honestly, for a beginner-friendly spot like this, the lack of size and the persistent onshore flow mean you’re not missing much. If you’re desperate, paddle out Monday afternoon or Wednesday the 8th morning when the wind is light and the swell is 4 ft from the SSW with energy at 768. That’s the biggest we see, but it’s still marginal. The period drops to 16 seconds, so it’s not as clean as the earlier groundswell.
After the 8th, it fades fast. By the 13th of July, the energy drops to 290 and the swell is only 3 ft, and by the 14th it’s down to 2 ft. Really fizzles out.
So, one standout: Monday the 6th afternoon. Otherwise, keep your board in the car and check back later.
Rusty.
