Beacons Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Beacons, a beach and reef setup that’s very consistent and wide open to the west.

Right now, the water is sitting at 74°, which is a solid 6° above the long-term average – that’s very unusual for this time of year, so it’s feeling more like a summer bath than early spring. Good for a longer session without the chill.

But here’s the honest truth: the next few days are flat out average at best. Monday 14 September and Tuesday 15 September serve up tiny, weak swell around 2ft to 4ft, with a cross or cross-on breeze messing things up. The combined energy is mostly in the low to mid hundreds (341 to 381), so there’s just not enough push for a proper wave. It’s poor.

We start seeing a bit of life from Wednesday 16 September morning – the swell lifts to 3ft from the SSW, period jumps to 17 seconds (that’s a proper groundswell) and the combined energy hits 522 (moderate). The wind goes light and onshore though, so it’s still marginal, not something to get excited about. Thursday 17 September and Friday 18 September are much the same story – small, light onshore winds, marginal conditions at best.

The first hint of something half-decent arrives on Saturday 19 September morning – 3ft of SSW swell with an 18-second period and light cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy is 550 (moderate) and it’s about the best of a quiet run. Still, it’s not a standout – just the pick of a poor lot.

From Sunday 20 September through to the end of the forecast window, it’s a long stretch of small swell (2ft to 4ft), mostly onshore winds, and combined energy hanging around 300 to 700. There’s a glimmer on Tuesday 29 September morning with 2ft of SW swell and a very long 18-second period, plus a light cross-onshore breeze, and the combined energy jumps to 523. That’s the most promising session in the second week, but it’s still marginal – more of a longboard cruiser than a barrel machine.

The standout? Honestly, there isn’t a proper standout here. If I had to pick one, it’s Tuesday 29 September morning – the combination of very long period (18 seconds) and moderate energy (523) suggests some cleaner lines, especially on the reef sections at Beacons, where longer period groundswell tends to shape up better than on the beach. The light cross-onshore breeze is a slight negative, but it’s the best you’ll get.

Crowds are often around here, so expect company if the surf looks even slightly decent.

Keep your expectations low for the next couple of weeks – it’s a quiet spell.
