Table - best surf conditions forecast for Point Loma over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s look at what we’ve got coming up for Point Loma.
The next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag, but there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. For the most part, we’re dealing with small, weak swell and average conditions, but a couple of standout windows pop up, especially towards the end.
We kick off on Friday, July 10th, with a SW swell around 3ft at a long 15 seconds. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Don’t get too excited though, as the wind is a light cross-shore and the overall wave energy is moderate (382). It’s pretty poor, honestly. That theme carries through the weekend and into the next week. Saturday and Sunday see similar waist-high swell, 3ft from the SW, with lighter winds. Conditions clean up a bit by Saturday afternoon with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the surf remains very ordinary.
Monday the 13th through to the following weekend are small. Swell drops to around 2ft to 2ft, with periods shifting around. Tuesday the 14th afternoon actually sees a sweet little 2ft swell from the SW with a very long 18-second period and a gentle offshore wind. That’s a clean window, but for advanced surfers only due to the size and the way long-period swells hit a sheltered spot like this. Energy is moderate (263). The rest of that week is mostly junk, with onshore winds and chop ruining things by Wednesday afternoon. There’s a notable jump in swell on Saturday, July 18th. The morning shows 3ft from the SW at 18 seconds, moderate energy (454), and clean conditions. That afternoon the energy bumps up a bit more (430) and the forecast suggests good surf conditions.
The true standout, however, lands on Sunday, July 19th. That morning we get a 4ft south swell with moderate energy (921) and a gentle offshore wind from the WNW. That’s as good as it gets in this stretch – clean, a little bit of push, and offshore. This is the one to circle on your calendar. After that, Monday the 20th holds in with 3ft SW swell and clean conditions, but the southerly wind creep back in on Tuesday the 21st, turning the surf choppy and poor again.
The second week fades fast. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are a write-off with rain showers and onshore winds. We get a brief flicker on Friday the 24th with a moderate offshore wind from the NW cleaning up a small 2ft swell. Then, another promising window hits on Saturday, July 25th. The morning shows a 4ft south swell, 12-second period, light cross-offshore wind, and good surf conditions. The afternoon gets even better with a gentle offshore wind and clean lines. Energy is moderate (630). It’s a long way out, so treat it as a promising prospect rather than a lock.
Overall, don’t waste your time on the first week unless you’re desperate for a paddle. Point Loma is a sheltered spot, so it needs that perfect combination. For the best of the best: Sunday morning, July 19th is your top pick. The backup is Saturday, July 25th.
Rusty.
