The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checkin' in with the local outlook. We're lookin' at Point Loma, a spot that's a bit of a mix with beach and reef under your feet. It's an advanced wave, so this ain't for the groms just findin' their feet.
Alright, right now the water temp is sittin' at about 69°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, no weirdness there.
First up, this Saturday the 22nd, we got tiny little waist-high waves pushin' in, about 1ft to 2ft from the southwest. The period is real long, 18 seconds, which is a classic groundswell, but with that size, it's just not got the grunt. Winds are light and cross-off, so the surface is clean, but it's one of those days where you're paddling more than you're riding. The energy is weak, so don't expect any punch.
Sunday the 23rd looks similar, still small but a little cleaner with a light offshore breeze from the WNW. Swell from the southwest, period still long, and the energy bumps up a touch, but we're still in knee-to-waist-high territory. It's surfable, but you won't be writing home about it.
Monday the 24th, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Morning has some clean little waist-high dribblers from the west-southwest, but the afternoon gets messy with a cross-shore wind, and the wave comment says poor conditions. Not worth the paddle for the afternoon session.
Tuesday the 25th is a repeat of the same small, clean, offshore wind conditions. It's consistent, but the size is just not there.
Now, Wednesday the 26th, things get interesting, but not in a good way for us. The swell bumps up to about 5ft from the south-southwest, and the energy is strong, but the wind is a cross-onshore. That combo will chop it right up, and with the period dropping to 14 seconds, the quality is going to be poor. Honestly, with that cross-onshore wind and the beach/reef setup, it might be a better day for the kite surfers than the paddle crew.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are a write-off. The swell drops back down, the wind is messy, and the wave comment is outright "poor." We're looking at a solid gap here with no good surf.
But hang tight, because Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th look like the best of this first week. The swell holds around 4ft from the southwest, period is a solid 15 to 16 seconds, and the energy is moderate. The wind is light and offshore or cross-off, so it's gonna be clean. The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions." This is the window to get out. It's not a standout epic, but it's the most fun you'll have in this run.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Monday the 31st of August right through to Thursday the 3rd of September, it's poor. Wind picks up, swell drops, and the wave comments are all "poor" or just "surfable but ordinary." There's a big gap of days where you're better off stayin' on the beach.
Now, lookin' further out, Friday the 4th of September shows some promise, but it's still a week away. The swell jumps to about 4ft from the south-southwest, and the energy is strong, but the wind is cross-shore and the comment says "marginal." It's a maybe.
The real standout in this whole forecast is Saturday the 5th of September. That morning is lookin' good. We got a 5ft swell from the south-southwest, a solid 17-second period, and the wind is a clean offshore from the northwest. The energy is very strong, and the comment says "expect very good surf conditions." The afternoon cleans up even more with a light offshore. This is the one to circle on your calendar, but keep in mind it's a long way off, so don't bet the house on it yet. Sunday the 6th of September gets a bit bigger, 6ft to 6ft from the south-southwest, but the period drops and the wind is cross-shore, making it a bit of a mess. At that size, it's gettin' into expert territory anyway.
So, if you're paddling out this week, hit Saturday the 29th or Sunday the 30th. For the long range, keep an eye on Saturday the 5th of September, that's the one that's got the potential to be a proper session.
Rusty.
