The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s be real – Point Loma is stuck in a slump for the next week. Waves are tiny and the conditions are just average. From Tuesday the 18th through to the end of Thursday the 27th, we’re looking at swell from 1ft to 4ft, with combined energy mostly in the weak to moderate range (345, 333, 384). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The real standout is the weekend of the 29th and 30th of August.
Alright, early on – Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th of August – we’ve got 2ft of SW swell, with a super long period of 16 seconds. That’s groundswell, and with that period, it’s better for a reef and beach setup like Point Loma than a straight beach. Winds are light and cross-off or offshore, so the surface is clean, but the wave height is just too small. The energy is weak (345, 384). Thursday the 20th is even weaker, with some cross-shore bumps. Friday the 21st to Sunday the 23rd is more of the same – 1ft to 2ft, clean but small. The period is still long (13 to 19 seconds), but with no size, it’s just a long-period dribble. Water temp is about average for this time of year.
Now, the real shift. The weekend of Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August is the best on offer. On Saturday the 29th, we’ve got 3ft of SW swell, period 17 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 664 in the morning and 743 in the afternoon. That’s moderate to strong energy for this spot. Winds are light and cross-off – clean and glassy. Sunday the 30th is similar, with 3ft of SW swell, period 16 seconds, and energy of 688 in the morning. This is the pick of the whole forecast. The swell direction is right on the optimum SW, and the light winds mean smooth conditions. Expect some crowds, because it’ll be the best it’s been in a while.
Monday the 31st of August still holds some good energy (429 to 407) and 3ft of SW swell, but it’s a step down. After that, into September, it fades back to ordinary small stuff.
So, bottom line: the first week and a half is flat. The standout is the 29th and 30th of August – clean, glassy, long-period SW groundswell with enough energy to make it worth paddling out. That’s your window.
Rusty.
