Table - best surf conditions forecast for Point Loma over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s break it down. Point Loma’s got a bit of a mixed bag coming up. The first few days are pretty average, but there’s a couple of sessions that stand out.
We start off on Wednesday afternoon, the 8th of July. The southerly groundswell is a long-period 16 seconds, pushing in at 3 feet from the SW. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore, and the water is a touch warmer than normal at 69°. The combined energy is moderate (557). It’s clean, but it’s a small, long-period swell, so it’ll be a bit more drawn out at this sheltered reef-and-beach setup. For the more advanced crew, it’s a decent window.
Thursday and Friday, the 9th and 10th, are a write-off. The wind swings to the south and becomes cross-onshore, chopping it right up. The swell stays small at 3 feet, and the energy drops a bit. Not worth paddling out for.
The weekend, the 11th and 12th, is more of the same – poor conditions with cross-onshore winds and choppy waves. The swell period drops to 14-15 seconds, but the wind just ruins it.
Monday the 13th through Thursday the 16th, we get a bit of a reprieve. The wind turns light and cross-offshore, and the waves are clean but small – 2 feet to 4 feet. The energy is moderate (268-420). The 16th of July (Thursday afternoon) has a WSW wind at 3 mph, making it glassy, with 3 feet from the W. It’s surfable, but it’s ordinary.
Now, here’s the standout. Saturday the 18th of July (morning). The swell is 3 feet from the SW, with a very long period of 18 seconds. The wind is a gentle offshore from the NW, and the combined energy is strong (444). The forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” This is a clean, long-period groundswell at a sheltered spot, which is a good combo. It’s best for the advanced crew here, as the long period can make the wave a bit more critical on the reef. Crowds are possible, so get in early.
The following week gets a bit more interesting, but it’s further out. Monday the 20th of July (afternoon) picks up a 6 feet SSW swell with a 13-second period and a cross-offshore wind from the WNW. The energy is high (964), and conditions are clean. This is a larger swell, so it’s more for the experienced. Then Tuesday the 21st of July (morning) has a 3 feet SW swell with 16 seconds, offshore wind, and clean conditions. The energy is strong (640). Both are worth a look, but the 20th is the bigger one.
After that, from the 22nd to the 23rd, the swell drops back to 3-3 feet, but the wind stays offshore, keeping it clean. It’s surfable but nothing special.
So, overall, the best on offer is Saturday the 18th of July (morning) for the clean, long-period swell, and Monday the 20th of July (afternoon) for the bigger, cleaner SSW swell. The rest is small and average.
