The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about the next couple of weeks at Point Loma (Point Loma-Ralphs). The water temperature is sitting right around average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
We’ve got a long, drawn-out period of small, clean, but pretty ordinary surf ahead. The opening week is all about tiny waves and light winds, with the odd moment of decent conditions. The standouts are going to be the very end of the forecast and into early September. There's a real gap between now and the good stuff.
Looking at the first few days, starting Wednesday the 19th, we have a tiny 3 ft SW swell with a very long period of 16 seconds. The combined energy is weak (368). It’s clean, but small. Thursday and Friday stay in that 2 ft to 2 ft range, with weak energy dropping to 201. The winds are light and cross-offshore, keeping it tidy, but it’s just not worth getting too excited about. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is more of the same, with heights dropping to 1 ft and 2 ft on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The energy is weak at 211 and 307 respectively. It’s clean, but you’ll be hunting for a wave.
We get a slight uptick on Monday the 24th morning with 2 ft of SW swell, a 18-second period, and moderate energy (427) with clean conditions. It’s the best of a very average bunch for the first week. Tuesday the 25th afternoon also sees a boost in energy to 418, but again, it’s small.
The real highlight kicks off on Saturday the 29th of August. The swell bumps up to 3 ft to 3 ft from the SW, with a period around 16-17 seconds. The combined energy finally pushes into moderate territory, hitting 565 and 602 on Saturday and Sunday. The wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. This is the best run of the whole forecast. The wave direction is from the SW, which is very close to the optimum for this break. That Sunday the 30th will be the pick of the trip, with 3 ft of clean, lined-up SW groundswell and light winds (W at 6 mph). It’s a solid, consistent option for the advanced crew.
Heading into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st brings a 4 ft W swell, but the period drops to a short 8 seconds. Combined energy is 414. It’s not the best quality, and the shorter period means it won’t have the same push. Wednesday the 2nd afternoon is back to a clean 2 ft SW swell with a 17-second period and moderate energy (422), with a gentle offshore wind. This is another good call for the late afternoon.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half are small and clean but not very powerful. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August are your standout days, with a fun, clean SW groundswell. The longer period swell will be best at the point and reef sections, as it might get a bit too straight for the beach breaks. Keep an eye on the forecast for the first few days of September too, as it looks promising.
Rusty.
