The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming down the pike for the Point Loma area over the next couple of weeks.

Well, it’s a bit of a slow start, but don't let that fool you. The coming weeks are looking pretty promising, especially for the patient surfer. The water is sitting at 71.1°F right now, which is a solid 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a heck of a lot more comfortable than we normally get, so you can probably leave the thick wetsuit at home.

Things kick off on Saturday the 18th with some small, clean waves at around 2ft from the SW, but the energy is pretty weak (355). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. You'll see a slight uptick through Sunday the 19th with the swell staying in the 2.5ft to 3ft range and the energy picking up into the moderate zone (661-810). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the W, keeping things tidy.

Monday the 20th through Tuesday the 21st holds consistent, clean conditions with light winds and waist-high swell around 2.5ft to 3.5ft. The energy stays moderate (466-514). This is solid fun for a longboard or a fish.

There's a bit of a lull mid-week on Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd, with the swell dropping a touch and the wave quality becoming a bit more ordinary. The energy dips into the lower-moderate range (349-425), but it's still rideable in the mornings.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. For the highlight of this outlook, keep your eyes on Friday the 24th of July. Saturday morning the 25th also looks solid. We’ve got a bump in swell coming from the SW, hitting 4ft with a very long period of 24 seconds on Friday morning. That’s proper groundswell energy, folks, and the combined energy is a solid 923 – that’s strong wave energy. This long-period SW groundswell loves a setup like Point Loma, a sheltered reef and beach break, so it should wrap in nicely. The light cross-offshore wind should keep it glassy. Just be aware, while the period is long, it can make the waves a bit more critical and the lulls between sets longer, so you need to be on your game. Saturday the 25th is a close second, with a long 21-second swell and light winds.

Later in the week, Sunday the 26th through Tuesday the 28th continues with clean, waist-to-chest high swell in the 3ft to 4ft range, with moderate energy (788-973). Conditions are looking user-friendly.

The next real standout arrives on Thursday the 30th of July. The swell picks up to 4ft from the S, but the energy jumps to a strong 1083, and the morning looks clean. And that leads right into Friday the 31st of July – this is probably the best session of the whole outlook. Swell builds to 5.5ft from the SSW, with a combined energy of 1106, making for some powerful, punchy waves. The wind is light cross-offshore and the water is clean. At that size, it’s going to be a big step up – definitely one for the advanced crew, as it’ll be too big for beginners. The following weekend into August looks like it slowly backs off, but stays clean and fun right through to Sunday the 2nd.

So, my call is: the morning of Friday the 31st of July is the absolute pick of the 16-day window for the experienced surfer. For intermediate paddlers, Saturday the 25th of July or the morning of Sunday the 26th of July are your best bets for clean, quality waves without the heavy juice. Get out there.
