The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Point Loma.
Right off the bat, we've got a pretty steady run of small, clean waves coming our way. It's not gonna be a massive, barn-storming swell, but for a stretch of the summer, it's got some real charm. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The weekend kicks off with a light, 3ft South-West swell, but the energy is actually decent for the size – we're looking at a combined energy of 459. It's a long-period groundswell at 18 seconds, which will give those waves some good shape but long gaps between sets. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it'll be a little bumpy, but not a write-off. The real fun starts on Saturday afternoon. The wind swings to a cross-offshore, the waves clean right up, and we're in for some tidy little 2ft to 3ft peelers. That's the kind of afternoon where you can just cruise on a log and have a ball.
Sunday and Monday keep the same vibe. The swell ticks up a notch, hitting 3ft to 4ft on Monday morning, with that swell still coming from the SSW. The wind is light and offshore or cross-off, so the surface will be glassy and clean. The combined energy is climbing into the moderate range, around 546 to 872, which is a good sign for punch on a small wave. This is a solid, consistent run of clean, small surf for the intermediate to advanced crew. It's not a beginner's dream, but it's not a washing machine either.
The standout window, and I mean the real standout, is the week starting Friday the 24th through to the 29th of July. The swell picks up, with a beautiful 4ft to 5ft groundswell coming from the SSW and SW. The wind holds offshore or light cross-off, and the wave energy gets seriously strong. We're seeing combined energy readings of 993, 1128, and even 1363. That's proper push. The 24th of July morning especially looks like a gem – a 2ft swell with a 24-second period is a freakish, long-period groundswell that will wrap in with real purpose. Best on offer is likely the 27th of July, Monday morning, with a 4ft, 18-second SW swell, combined energy of 1363, and a light cross-off breeze. That's the kind of morning that makes you call in sick. Just be aware, this is a reef and beach setup, and with a period that long, the waves might break a little too straight on the beach, so the reefs and points will be the place to be.
The 28th of July pulls in a bit of a cross-on wind with some clouds, which drops the quality a little, but it's still surfable. The rest of the month and into August looks like it'll fade back into small, clean, but ordinary conditions. The energy dips back into the 200-300 range, which is weak.
So, bottom line: Don't sleep on this weekend for a clean, fun session. But the real fire is the middle of next week, from the 24th to the 27th. That's your window for the best waves of the forecast.
Rusty.
