Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us at Point Loma.
Right off the bat, we’re in a bit of a slow patch. The first couple of days are pretty average, with small, long-period SW groundswell in the 2ft to 3ft range and a persistent cross-off breeze. The wave energy is moderate, sitting around 394 to 414 (combined energy), but the conditions are just "ordinary" at best. Nothing to get too excited about, but you could still get a few if you're keen.
The real standout comes on Sunday the 5th. It’s still small, about 2ft from the SW, but the morning session looks the pick with lighter winds and that cross-off flow keeping things clean. The energy is still moderate (402), but for the size, it’s about as good as it’s going to get this week.
Then we get a nice run from Monday the 6th through Wednesday the 8th. The swell ticks up a touch – around 3ft to 4ft from the SW – and the wind turns truly offshore on Monday morning and stays light or cross-off for a few days. The wave energy climbs steadily from 481 up to 846 (combined energy), so there’s some proper push in the water. These are the best conditions on offer. Expect clean, lined-up waves with that longer period (16-18 seconds). The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no shock to the system there.
From Thursday the 9th onward, things get trickier. The wind swings around to the south and comes cross-shore or even cross-onshore, and the quality drops off. By the weekend of the 10th and 11th, it’s choppy and messy with moderate onshore winds. The surf is still small (3ft) but the conditions are poor. That stretch lasts through the middle of the following week.
The next glimmer of hope shows up on Sunday the 12th – the wind swings back to a light cross-off and the swell hangs in there around 3ft from the SW, with energy around 315 to 345 (combined energy). It’s surfable but nothing special.
The best bet further out is Monday the 13th with a gentle offshore wind and a 3ft SSW swell. It’s on the small side, but clean.
After that, the surf fades into a lull. From Tuesday the 14th through Thursday the 16th, there’s just not enough energy or good wind. Swell drops to 1ft to 2ft, and most sessions are poor or very ordinary. It’s a real flat spell.
The run picks up a little on Friday the 17th with a nice long-period (19 seconds) 2ft SW swell, but the energy is still low (373 combined energy) – more of a glassy longboard day if the wind holds.
The best call in the whole outlook? That Monday to Wednesday block, July 6th to 8th. The swell is small but rideable, the wind is clean, and there’s enough energy (481-846 combined energy) to make it worthwhile. If you can only get out one day, make it one of those.
Now, a quick word on this spot: Point Loma is a sheltered beach and reef setup, so it doesn’t see the biggest swell, but when the wind plays ball, it can be surprisingly fun. Crowds are possible here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself. It’s an advanced wave, so if you’re a beginner, the smaller days around 2ft are your best bet – anything over 5ft will be a handful.
The long-period swell we’re seeing is classic groundswell – it’s got shape and energy, but at a beach-break component it can sometimes break a bit straight. That said, the reef and points here handle it well.
Stay stoked.
