The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be honest—this run of swell at Point Loma is a bit of a flat, ordinary stretch. It’s a sheltered beach-and-reef setup that really needs a solid SW groundswell to fire, and for the next few days, we’re barely getting a pulse. The water’s sitting at 69°F which is about average for the time of year, so at least the wetsuit isn’t a debate.
Right now, from Thursday the 20th through the weekend, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves. Swell heights are stuck around 1 ft to 2 ft from the SW, with periods that are all over the place—some short 13-second stuff, then a jump to 19 seconds on Sunday which is long period but it’s just too small to do anything with. Combined energy is weak, hovering between 208 and 349, so there’s barely any push. Winds are light and mostly cross-off or offshore, which would usually be a dream, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a glassy lake. Honestly, not worth paddling out for.
We get a slight lift from Monday the 24th into Tuesday the 25th. Swell inches up to 2 ft to 3 ft from the SW, still with that long period (16-17 seconds) which is a groundswell, but it’s super weak energy (314 to 481). Winds stay light and cross-off, so conditions are clean, but the waves are just barely surfable. It’s what I’d call a “get the legs wet” session, not a standout.
Then Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th, the swell bumps up a bit more—4 ft to 5 ft from the SSW with periods around 13 seconds. This is where the energy finally climbs into the moderate range (672 to 951), but the wind turns onshore or cross-shore, making it choppy and messy. The setup is a beach-and-reef, so with that size and cross-onshore wind, it honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Conditions are poor to marginal.
There’s a big gap of nothing special after that until Sunday the 30th of August. That morning and afternoon we finally see a return to clean, light cross-off winds and a consistent 3 ft SW swell at 15 seconds. Energy is moderate (536) and the conditions are rated as good. This is the best of the whole run—small but clean, with that long period helping the shape. If you’re keen, this is the window to aim for.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September drop back to 2 ft to 3 ft, with offshore winds keeping things tidy, but it’s back to ordinary, low-energy surf (245 to 297). After that, it’s a mix of poor and marginal right through to the 4th of September, with some WNW windswell appearing but with short 10-second periods and onshore wind, so nothing to get excited about.
Bottom line: this is a long, flat run with only one real standout—Sunday the 30th of August. That’s your window for clean, small but fun waves at Point Loma. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath before then.
Rusty.
