Table - best surf conditions forecast for Point Loma over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Point Loma over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we've got a quiet start. The first few days are looking pretty flat and messy. Saturday (11th July) is a write-off, with some cross-onshore winds and a weak, choppy 3ft swell. The energy is weak (379) and the conditions are just poor. Sunday and Monday (12th-13th) clean up a bit with light cross-offshore winds, but the waves are still small and ordinary. The water is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit might be a bit thinner.
We’re in a bit of a lull through the middle of the week. Tuesday through Friday (14th-17th) see the swell dropping to 2ft-2ft. The wind does go offshore on Tuesday afternoon (14th) and Friday morning (17th), which is lovely for the surface, but there just isn't enough juice to make it worth paddling out for most. The energy is low, dipping into the 200s.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real standout is the weekend of the 18th and 19th of July. Saturday the 18th looks like the pick of the whole period. We’ve got a solid pulse of S/SE swell coming through, with heights building to 4ft by the afternoon. The real story is the energy, which jumps up to a strong 895-904. The winds are light and cross-offshore, so the surface will be clean and glassy. This is the best chance for a proper session.
Sunday the 19th keeps the fun rolling with 4ft in the morning, and the wind goes offshore (NW) in the afternoon. The energy is still strong (797) and the setup is clean. For a more advanced spot like Point Loma, these conditions are hard to beat.
After that, Monday the 20th is still good, with clean 3ft waves and light winds, but the energy drops back to moderate (422-443). From Tuesday the 21st onward, we slip back into a funk with cross-shore winds and weaker, messier surf. The energy drops back into the 100s, so the windows for good waves are small.
The final weekend of the 25th-26th of July shows a glimmer of hope. Saturday afternoon (25th) sees a clean 3ft SW swell with a very long period of 20 seconds and good energy (654). Sunday the 26th is also clean with offshore winds and 3ft waves. That long period swell will wrap nicely around the point, but it's a long way out, so we’ll keep an eye on it.
Overall, aside from the blockbuster weekend of the 18th-19th, the surf is inconsistent and small. If you're a beginner, the 4ft-4ft days on the 18th-19th are manageable, but the bigger energy and long period makes it more suited to the regulars who know the lineup. This is a spot that can get a bit of a crowd when it's on, so keep that in mind.
Rusty out.
