The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. I’ll level with you – the forecast is pretty flat for a good stretch, so we’re going to have to be patient.
Right now, through Wednesday the 19th of August, Point Loma is offering up some small 3ft swell from the southwest with a very long 16-second period. The water temperature is about 70°, which is pretty average for this time of year. The combined swell energy is sitting at 384 (moderate), so there’s a little bit of grunt there, but the waves are just too ordinary to get excited about. Wednesday morning has a nice offshore breeze from the WNW, so it’ll be clean, but the size is just not there.
From Thursday the 20th through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a long, drawn-out run of tiny surf. Swell heights bounce between 1ft and 2ft, all from the southwest or south-southwest. The periods are all over the place – some short, some long – but the combined energy never really gets above 395. There are a few moments with clean conditions and light cross-offshore breezes, but honestly, it’s just not enough to warrant a paddle out. This is a pretty quiet stretch for Point Loma.
Now, the real standout finally shows up on Saturday the 29th of August. The swell builds to 3ft from the southwest, with a 17-second period in the morning. The combined energy pushes up to 677 (strong), and the wind is offshore from the WNW at 15 km/h, keeping things glassy and clean. Sunday the 30th holds similar quality with 4ft southwest swell, 15-second period, and light cross-offshore winds. This is the best window we’ve got – clean, lined-up waves that’ll be fun for intermediate and experienced surfers. The direction is right on the money for Point Loma’s optimum SW exposure.
By Monday the 31st, the swell drops back to 3ft, and the wind goes cross-shore, so it’s back to mediocre conditions. The rest of the first week of September is more of the same – small, ordinary surf with nothing to write home about.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a long flat spell until the weekend of the 29th and 30th of August. That’s your window. Don’t get too hyped too early – long-range forecasts can shift – but right now, that’s the one to circle.
