Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty.
Alright folks, let’s look at what we’ve got. The next week or so at Point Loma is a bit of a mixed bag, with the real highlight waiting for you in the second week. The water is sitting at a warm 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so a spring suit might be all you need.
We kick things off on Tuesday, July 7th. The morning is showing clean, cross-offshore wind with a 4ft southwest swell. The period is a very long 18 seconds, which gives those waves some real grunt and shape. The combined energy is moderate at 782. It’s not huge, but it’s clean. The afternoon cleans up even more with the wind turning offshore and the swell dropping to 3ft, still with that long 18-second period and energy up to 848. This is a solid, if small, start.
Wednesday the 8th keeps the trend going. Morning and afternoon both offer clean conditions with a 3ft southwest swell and a 16-second period. The energy is high on Wednesday morning at 882, easing to 639 in the afternoon. It’s small but those long-period swells from the southwest are just what this reef setup likes.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. From Thursday the 9th through to the middle of the following week, it’s mostly small, onshore, and choppy. Winds swing to the south and southwest, making for messy conditions on the surface. There are a few windows of cleaner cross-offshore wind on Sunday afternoon the 12th and into Monday the 13th, but the swell is tiny – just 2ft to 3ft – and the energy drops off a fair bit.
Now, here’s the standout moment. You want to be in the water on Sunday, July 19th. This is the one. Both the morning and afternoon are looking mint – offshore wind from the northwest with a clean 3ft to 3ft southwest swell. The period is a long 17 seconds, and the energy numbers are solid, hitting 500 in the morning and 565 in the afternoon. It’s not a massive swell, but clean, glassy conditions on a long-period groundswell at Point Loma are hard to beat. The crowd can show up here sometimes, so get there early.
The Monday after, July 20th, also looks worth a paddle with continued offshore wind and a similar size swell, though the energy dips a bit. After that, it looks like the winds get messy again.
So, the call: The start of the period is small but ridable, with the very best chance for a clean session falling on that Sunday, July 19th. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but that’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Rusty.
