The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the first few days of this outlook are a bit of a letdown. We’ve got a long dry spell before anything really gets going. From now until the morning of Sunday the 19th, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The surf is small, the wind is messy, and the conditions are ordinary. It’s a real flat spell to kick things off.
Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th offer tiny, weak waves around 2ft to 2ft from the SSW with a bit of a longer period, but the energy is low. The wind is offshore or light, so it’s clean, but the swell is just too small to get excited about. Thursday the 16th through Saturday the 18th get worse – cross-onshore winds and choppy, poor conditions. The combined energy picks up a bit, but the quality is shot. Surfable? Barely. Kite surfers might get a look in, but for paddling, it’s a write-off.
Now, finally, things turn around. Sunday the 19th of July is the first real standout. Point Loma (Point Loma, San Diego) wakes up. The morning brings a clean 4ft SSW swell, with a period of 12 seconds and a light cross-offshore breeze. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 70°, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home. The combined energy is moderate to strong, and the conditions are clean. This is your first real window. The afternoon lightens up a bit to 3ft, but still clean and worth a session.
Monday the 20th keeps the run going. Morning sees 3ft from the SSW with a nice 11-second period, light cross-offshore wind, and clean faces. Energy is solid. The afternoon improves with a gentle offshore breeze and 3ft from the SW at 16 seconds. Clean, lined-up waves. This is a good one.
Tuesday the 21st is another solid day. Both the morning and afternoon offer 3ft to 3ft from the SW, periods around 15 to 16 seconds, and light to gentle offshore or cross-offshore winds. Clean, consistent, and the energy is moderate. This is classic Point Loma – a reliable reef-and-beach setup handling the long-period SW groundswell nicely.
The real ripper, though, is the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July. Saturday the 25th is the absolute standout. Morning kicks off with 5ft from the SSW, a period of 13 seconds, light cross-offshore breeze, and very clean conditions. The combined energy is strong. This is the best swell of the whole window. The afternoon holds the same size and quality. It’s getting a bit solid for beginners at over 5ft, but for intermediate and advanced surfers, this is firing. Sunday the 26th follows up with a morning of 3ft but from the SW at 19 seconds – very long period groundswell. The energy is incredibly strong for the size. That long period will make the waves steep and powerful, best handled on a point or reef. The wind stays light and cross-offshore. Afternoon drops to 4ft but still offshore and clean.
The following week, Monday the 27th through Wednesday the 29th, keeps the surf alive with 2ft to 3ft from the SW, moderate to strong offshore winds, and clean conditions. Energy drops off a bit, but it’s still surfable and fun. Crowds are sometimes a thing at Point Loma, but with the quality on offer, it’ll be worth sharing the lineup.
So, bottom line: the first week is a dusty wait. From Sunday the 19th onward, it’s game on. The standout is Saturday the 25th – that 5ft SSW swell with clean, light winds is the one to mark on your calendar. Get out there.
Rusty.
