The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The opening stretch is a bit of a letdown, to be honest. Wednesday and Thursday the 15th and 16th are pretty ordinary with small, weak swell and a cross-off or cross-on breeze that’s just not doing us any favours. The wave energy is weak (233) and the conditions are just messy. Friday the 17th is more of the same – poor surf with a moderate cross-onshore wind. We’re really just waiting for things to clean up.
The first real glimmer comes on Saturday the 18th. The morning is still a bit marginal with a cross breeze and slight chop, but the afternoon cleans right up. We’ve got a 2ft SW swell with a light cross-off breeze and the wave energy is moderate (454). It’s not big, but it’s clean and rideable. That’s the first session worth paddling out for.
Now, Sunday the 19th is a standout. The morning brings a 5ft SSW swell with a period of 13 seconds, clean light offshore winds, and the wave energy jumps to strong (1080). The afternoon holds similar size at 4-5ft. This is the best of the first week – proper groundswell, clean faces, and the water temperature is 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a good sign.
The Point Loma break is a sheltered beach and reef setup, so it handles that SW direction well. It’s an advanced wave, and the crowds can be around sometimes, so keep your eyes peeled for a peak.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st stay solid with 3-4ft swell, light offshore winds, and clean conditions. Wave energy is moderate (635-592). Nothing world-class, but consistent fun.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd get a bit mixed again. The morning of the 23rd is marginal with a 5ft SSW swell and light cross breeze, but the afternoon of the 23rd really cleans up with a 5ft swell and a light cross-off wind. The energy is strong (1009). That afternoon is a good call.
Now, here’s the big one. Friday the 24th of July – the afternoon is a standout. We’ve got a 6-7ft SSW swell, a light cross-off breeze, and the wave energy is very strong (1961). The morning is a bit messy with a cross breeze, but that afternoon session is for the experienced crew. At 6-7ft, it’s getting into the territory where it’s only for the experts, especially with the period at 14 seconds. That’s a powerful, long-period groundswell that will be running hard.
Saturday the 25th of July keeps the goods coming. Both the morning and afternoon have 6ft SSW swell with offshore winds – the morning is a moderate offshore (20 km/h), the afternoon is a gentler offshore. Wave energy is strong (1636-1445). This is a proper run of swell for the confident surfer. The direction is spot on for the optimum SW direction.
After that, we settle back down. Sunday the 26th through Tuesday the 28th of July bring 3-4ft SW swell with light cross-off winds and moderate wave energy. Clean, fun, but nothing to get too excited about.
Then the end of the month, from Wednesday the 29th of July, the wind swings onshore and the conditions turn poor again. The wave energy drops back to moderate (538) and it gets choppy. The last few days of July are a write-off for decent surf.
Best of the pack: Sunday the 19th for a solid, clean session, and the afternoon of Friday the 24th of July for the bigger, more powerful stuff. If you’re experienced, that Friday is the one to circle.
Rusty.
