Alright, let’s switch over to the imperial system for the same outlook.
Right now, the surf is pretty marginal. We’re looking at a long run of small, mostly ordinary waves with a few windows of clean conditions. The main break in the mix is Point Loma. It’s a sheltered beach-and-reef setup that needs a good SW swell to light up, and the swell direction is spot on for that. The water is sitting at 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Friday morning (July 3rd) kicks things off with a little 3ft SW groundswell, period at 16 seconds – real long, real clean lines. The wind is offshore from the WNW at 9 mph, keeping the surface glassy. Combined wave energy is moderate at 394. It’s surfable, but it’s not going to blow your mind. Conditions are clean, but the size is small. Crowds are possible here, so expect a few others out.
Friday afternoon drops off a bit – 3ft, still that long-period SW, but the wind swings cross-offshore and picks up to 12 mph, and the surf quality takes a hit. That afternoon session is a pass.
Saturday morning (July 4th) is the first real standout. The swell drops a touch to 2ft, still from the SW, period a solid 14 seconds, but the wind is light offshore from the NW at 9 mph. The water is clean, and the wave energy is moderate at 414. This is good surf for the size – clean, peeling lines for the advanced crew. If you can get out early, this is the pick of the first few days.
Saturday afternoon slips back – 2ft, but the period jumps to 19 seconds, which is very long. That long period at a beach-and-reef setup like Point Loma can make the waves a bit too straight, but with offshore wind from the WNW at 9 mph, it’ll still be rideable. Not a standout, but decent.
Sunday (July 5th) is similar – clean in the morning with a 2ft SW groundswell and cross-offshore wind, then moderate offshore in the afternoon. Still small, still clean, but nothing to drive for.
Monday (July 6th) brings a bump in energy – combined energy hits 505 in the morning (moderate) and 596 in the afternoon (still moderate, but building). Swell is 3ft to 2ft, long period, and offshore winds in the afternoon. That Monday afternoon session actually looks clean and fun for the size.
Then we hit a real sweet spot. Tuesday, July 7th through Wednesday, July 8th is the best run of the forecast. Swell builds to 4ft on Tuesday morning, still from the SW at 18 seconds. Wind is light cross-offshore from the W at 9 mph. Wave energy jumps to 764 (moderate to strong) and stays high. Wednesday morning hits 4ft again with 918 energy – that’s some proper juice. Winds are light, cross-offshore, and the conditions are clean. This is the highlight of the whole period – consistent, clean, shoulder-to-head-high waves for advanced surfers. Beginners should stay out of this – it’s over 5ft, so it’s pushing beyond their comfort zone.
Thursday (July 9th) through Saturday (July 11th) turns ugly. The wind swings cross-onshore from the SSW, the chop comes up, and the quality tanks. Swell size hangs around 3ft but with poor wind, it’s a write-off. This stretch is better left for the kites.
Sunday (July 12th) and Monday (July 13th) see the wind back off, but the swell drops to 3ft – 3ft. Conditions are clean again, but it’s ordinary. Energy is dropping into the 300s. Not much to get excited about, but you could get wet.
From Tuesday, July 14th through Friday, July 17th, the swell fades hard. Heights drop to 1ft – 2ft, periods are long but the energy is weak (200-300 range). Winds are offshore or cross-offshore, so it’s clean, but it’s barely surfable. This is a real lull.
Saturday, July 18th shows a late pulse – 3ft SW groundswell at 18 seconds, clean with cross-offshore wind, and energy jumps to 486. That Saturday morning looks like a solid return to form, but the afternoon drops off with stronger wind. It’s a week and a half out, so treat it as promising but not locked in.
Overall, the standout is Tuesday and Wednesday (July 7th–8th) – that’s the best combination of size, clean conditions, and energy. Saturday morning (July 4th) is the runner-up for cleaner, smaller waves. The rest is mostly ordinary or poor, with a few bright spots in between.
