Table - best surf conditions forecast for Point Loma over the next 16 days.
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s size up what’s coming for Point Loma.
Right off the bat, the first few days are flat and forgettable. Sunday afternoon (12 July) we’ve got 3ft SSW swell, but the wind’s cross-off and it’s just average. That’s the story for the next few days – small surf, nothing to get excited about. The water’s sitting at 70°, a little warmer than usual for this time of year. Not a classic start.
The first real standout is Saturday 18 July. The morning sees 4ft S swell with a gentle offshore wind out of the NW, keeping things glassy. The energy is strong (861). By the afternoon it steps up to 5ft S swell, still with that offshore breeze, and the energy jumps to 1069 (very strong). The period is 13 seconds, so it’s got punch – ideal for the reefs. This is the pick of the week. Crowds are a possibility on a Saturday, so be ready.
Sunday 19 July keeps it clean with 3ft SW swell, a long 17-second period, and light cross-off winds (energy 673). Monday 20 July and Tuesday 21 July hold onto 3ft to 4ft SW swell, with offshore or cross-off winds. The direction lines up with the optimum SW for the spot. Good, clean, fun waves.
The next big one is Thursday 23 July. The morning delivers 5ft SSW swell with light offshore wind out of the WNW (energy 935). The afternoon gets even better – 6ft SSW swell, still offshore, with energy at 1088 (very strong). That’s a legit wave for experienced surfers only – too big for beginners. The period is 14 seconds, plenty of power.
Friday 24 July and Saturday 25 July back down to 5ft and 5ft SSW swell, with clean offshore winds. Energy stays solid (787 to 745). The last days, Sunday 26 July and Monday 27 July, have smaller 2ft to 3ft SW swell but with very long 18- to 19-second periods. Light winds, clean, but not as much size.
The best windows are Saturday 18 July afternoon (5ft S, offshore, very strong energy) and Thursday 23 July afternoon (6ft SSW, offshore, very strong energy). Everything else is clean but smaller. The water’s a touch warmer than normal at 70°. No huge gaps, but the first few days are poor. It fires up around the 18th.
Rusty.
