The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Point Loma. We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, and honestly, it starts out pretty flat and uninspiring. The first few days—Friday the 21st through Monday the 24th—are all ankle-biters. Swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, with some light breezes keeping things clean, but there’s just not enough push to get excited about. You’re looking at surfable waves with very ordinary conditions.
Then things start to perk up. Tuesday the 25th is where it gets interesting. The swell builds a bit—3ft to 4ft coming from the SSW, with a period around 13 seconds. The combined energy is solid and building, hitting 569 in the morning and jumping to 731 by the afternoon. That’s moderate energy starting to show up. Winds stay light, mostly cross-off from the west, so the surface stays clean. This is the best on offer early in the run—clean, building swell, and not too crowded if you pick your moment.
Wednesday the 26th takes a turn. Swell pushes up to 5ft, but the wind shifts to a cross-on from the south, and the combined energy surges to 1045. That’s strong wave energy, but the quality drops fast. The onshore wind chops it up. It’s going to be messy, poor surf conditions. That run of poor conditions stretches through Thursday the 27th and into Friday the 28th morning. It’s a bit of a rough patch.
Friday afternoon the 28th has a flicker of hope—cross-off wind returns, 4ft SSW swell at 13 seconds, and the energy is 616. That’s clean and surfable again, but it’s a short window before Saturday the 29th gets messy again with cross-on wind. Sunday the 30th then turns it right back around: morning session with 3ft swell from the SW, 15-second period, light cross-off breeze, 522 energy—clean conditions. The afternoon is even better with a gentle offshore from the WNW. That Sunday is a real standout for a weekend session.
Monday the 31st morning holds clean surf with a gentle breeze, but the afternoon gets a cross-chop. Then we move into September with a mixed bag. Tuesday the 1st is marginal, Wednesday the 2nd morning offers a clean wave with a gentle offshore and 3ft SW swell, and Thursday the 3rd afternoon has a 2ft SW swell but with a long 18-second period and a clean offshore breeze. That long period swell will peel nicely at Point Loma’s reef, so you’ll get good shape, but the size is small.
Then on Saturday the 5th of September, we hit another standout. Morning has 4ft SW swell at 16 seconds, a strong 743 energy reading, and a clean offshore from the NW. The afternoon pushes that energy to 787 with a moderate offshore—wind is up a bit but still favorable. That’s going to be the best long-range session, offering clean, long-period groundswell with decent size. A bit far out, but it’s looking promising.
Water temperature is about 69°F, which is normal for this time of year—nothing unusual there.
Point Loma is a sheltered spot, so it doesn't handle big SW swells as well, but when the wind behaves, it’s a fun little wave. This forecast has a few solid windows: Tuesday the 25th, Sunday the 30th, and Saturday the 5th of September are your best bets to get a clean one. The rest is small or choppy. If you're patient, you’ll score.
