The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of clean, rideable waves lined up at Point Loma, starting Saturday the 18th and rolling through most of the period. The water’s sitting at a warm 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like summer’s really kicked in. The swell’s coming from the southwest, so the break is nicely sheltered, and the winds are mostly light cross-off or gentle offshore, meaning the surface will be clean and inviting.
Saturday morning, the 18th, we’re looking at 3ft of swell from the SW with a very long period of 18 seconds, giving it that nice groundswell push. The combined energy is moderate (459), and with a light breeze it’s going to be smooth. The afternoon holds similar, though the swell drops a touch to 2ft. Sunday the 19th picks up again with 3ft to 3ft, periods still long at 17 seconds, and the energy climbs to 662–778. Monday the 20th is another clean day with 3ft, and the afternoon sees a gentle offshore wind – that’s a real sweet spot.
The standout here is the stretch from the 26th of July through to the 1st of August. On Sunday the 26th we’ve got 3ft to 3ft at 18–19 seconds, energy in the 800–900 range, and clean conditions. Monday the 27th morning bumps up to 4ft, still 18 seconds, and the energy hits a strong 1048 – that’s proper wave energy. Winds are light to gentle, so it’s going to be firing. Then on the 31st of July, Friday morning, we see 6ft of swell from the SSW, period of 14 seconds, and massive energy of 1434. That’s a big, powerful swell, and it’s paired with gentle cross-off winds. It’s a big day, only for the expert crew – 6ft is too much for beginners. The 1st of August keeps the good run going with 6ft and a gentle offshore wind, though the energy drops a bit to 1120.
For the second week, things get a bit more mixed. The 28th of July has 4ft to 4ft but with cross-shore winds, so there’s a little chop. The 29th and 30th are a bit ordinary with onshore or cross-shore flow, but the 30th afternoon cleans up again with a cross-off wind and 4ft. The real gem in the long range is the 31st of July and 1st of August – those are the ones to circle on your calendar. There’s a drop-off on the 2nd of August with smaller swell and cross-shore winds, so that’s the end of the run.
Crowds are possible at Point Loma, so get in early for the best of it. The 27th of July morning and the 31st of July morning are the true standouts – big, clean, and powerful. Don’t sleep on them.
