The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let’s talk Point Loma. We’ve got a nice, long stretch of surf coming, starting right now and running all the way through the next couple of weeks. The water temp is 71°F at the start, which is about 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s well above average, so you can ditch the wetsuit.
The first standout is this Sunday the 19th. We’ve got clean 3 to 3ft swell running out of the SW with a very long 17-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and it’s carrying moderate energy (662). With a gentle cross-offshore breeze, it’ll be glassy and lined up. It’s on the smaller side, but for a point-reef setup like this, that long period will wrap in nicely. Expect a few others out there.
That chest-high, clean SW groundswell sticks around through Monday and Tuesday (3 to 4ft, periods 15-16 secs), with light cross-off breezes keeping things tidy. Good fun, nothing huge.
Now jump ahead to Friday the 24th – the swell drops a bit in height to 2ft, but the period jumps to a massive 24 seconds. That’s as long as it gets. The combined energy is strong (943), so even though the face is small, there’s serious push. Perfect for a reef set-up. Light cross-off winds again. Very clean but sneaky.
In the second week, things get interesting. From Sunday the 26th through Monday the 27th, we’re still looking at clean 3 to 4ft SW groundswell with periods of 18-19 seconds, and light breezes. Consistent and clean.
The real standout is Friday the 31st of July. The swell jumps to 6ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon out of the SSW, with a 15-second period. The combined energy hits 1680 and then 2157 – that’s strong to very strong. Morning has a light offshore breeze, afternoon stays cross-off with a light breeze. This is expert territory at that size on a reef, and the forecast says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. That’s the one to circle.
That runs into Saturday the 1st of August with similar 6 to 6ft SSW swell, light breezes, and offshore wind in the afternoon. Still very good but dropping off. By Sunday the 2nd, it settles back to 5 to 5ft, still clean.
After that, we get a few small days to wind things down. A solid run of surf for the area.
Rusty.
