Table - best surf conditions forecast for Point Loma over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again, with the straight-up imperial version.
So, the next 16 days at Point Loma are a slow-burn, mellow kind of forecast. First week has some decent bump, but the wind plays games with you. The second week cleans up nicely, but the wave height drops off. There's one day that punches through as the absolute best.
First surf is on Wednesday, July 8th. Point Loma (San Diego) is getting a long-period SW groundswell (16 seconds) running about 3ft. It's a sheltered spot here, and the combined swell energy is moderate (882). The wind is a light WSW, so it's cross-off and clean. Not big, but you can get wet on a fun board. Water temp is about normal for the season.
Thursday and Friday, July 9th and 10th, are trash. Wind swings around to the SSW, blowing cross-onshore, making a choppy mess. The swell holds around 3ft, but you can't surf that kind of chop.
We get a little break on Sunday afternoon, July 12th. The wind turns cross-off from the W again. Swell is still around 3ft with a 14-second period, and the energy is moderate (403). Clean, but nothing special.
Monday, July 13th through Friday morning, July 17th is a long, boring stretch of "ordinary" surf. Waves are 2 to 2ft with periods from 13 to 19 seconds. Conditions are generally clean with light cross-off or offshore winds, especially Friday morning with a light NW offshore. But all the power is gone, energy is down in the 200-300 range. These are strictly longboard days.
Now, here is the one. Sunday, July 19th is the standout. The morning is glassy, wind is only 5 km/h from the W. Absolute flat calm. The swell is 3ft from the SW at 17 seconds, a proper groundswell. Combined swell energy is solidly moderate-to-strong (611). The ocean is going to be clean, smooth, and lined up. The afternoon is even better – wind goes NW and cross-off, and the energy jumps to 933 – nearly double the power. This is the session you do not miss.
Monday and Tuesday, July 20th and 21st, keep the clean theme going with morning NW offshore winds at around 15 km/h and consistent 3ft SW swell. The energy stays decent (500+), so the quality is there, just not the size. Good but not the peak.
Wednesday, July 22nd, is the last decent day. A small 3ft SW swell, 14 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze. Clean, but it's fading out.
The 23rd of July is a hard no. A nasty south wind at 25 km/h blowing onshore. Don't even bother looking at the water.
For a break that's fairly consistent, this is a pretty flat and quiet run with only a few clean windows. But that Sunday, July 19th, is an absolute gem. Circle it.
