Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Point Loma.
Overall, it’s a bit of a slow burn. We’ve got a nice little window early on, then a long stretch of ordinary to poor conditions, before a late pulse of bigger swell shows up in the third week. The water temp feels about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
The pick of the first week is Monday, July 6th. We get a clean 3 ft to 2 ft south-west swell at 15 to 16 seconds, nothing huge but the morning is glassy light offshore wind and the afternoon stays clean with a moderate offshore breeze. Combined swell energy is moderate (490 to 593). For a sheltered spot like Point Loma, that’s as good as it gets for a fun, relaxed session. Tuesday the 7th still has 4 ft of clean south-west swell but the wind turns cross-offshore, so the lines will be a bit more bent out of shape. Wednesday the 8th is similar, clean but slightly smaller. After that, from Thursday the 9th through to July 16th, it’s mostly poor to ordinary. The wind shifts cross-shore and then cross-onshore, the swell hangs around 3 ft but the chop ruins it. Not worth paddling out unless you’re desperate for a float.
Then, around Monday, July 20th, we see a rise in swell, picking up to 4 ft from the south with a short 13-14 second period. Combined energy jumps to moderate-strong (840-1044). But—and this is a big but—the wind is cross-onshore or straight cross, so the waves are going to be choppy and crumbly. The morning of Tuesday, July 21st sees the biggest swell of the whole forecast at 5 ft from the south-south-west, but again, the wind is side-shore with slight chop. For a shallow reef setup like Point Loma, that’s going to be a messy closeout slide, more for the hardcore than anyone looking for a clean ride.
So realistically, the standout is that Monday the 6th. Get it while it’s clean because the rest of the run is a grind.
Rusty.
