The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way for Point Loma over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temp is sitting at a comfortable 69°F, which is about average for this time of year. Now, don't get too excited for the immediate days ahead because the start of the run is pretty weak. From Friday the 21st right through to Tuesday the 25th of August, we're looking at tiny, thigh-high dribblers at best. We're talking swell heights between 1ft and 2ft, mostly from the SW or SSW, with combined wave energy readings in the low hundreds (209 to 369). The winds are light and mostly cross-off or offshore, so it’ll be clean, but there's just no push. It's surfable if you're desperate for a float, but it's very ordinary.
Then we hit a real downer on Wednesday the 26th of August. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the SSW, and the combined energy jumps to a punchy 1600, but the wind swings onshore from the south at 12 mph. That's a solid cross-onshore and it's going to chop the hell out of the bay. Thursday the 27th isn't much better with moderate cross-onshore winds and dropping energy. Honestly, for a beach and reef setup like Point Loma, this is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. A real waste of a push.
Things start to look up a bit on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning kicks off with clean 3ft SW groundswell (16-second period) and gentle offshore winds from the WNW at 9 mph. Combined energy is a moderate 672. Sunday the 30th holds similar with clean 4ft SW swell and light winds. It's not pumping, but it's clean and rideable for the advanced crew who know the reef.
Now, here's the real highlight. Mark your calendars for Saturday the 5th of September. We’ve got a proper SSW groundswell rolling in at 7ft, with a combined energy reading of 1771 – that's a strong, solid push. The wind is light from the WSW, keeping it clean with that cross-off look. This is the best window of the whole forecast. It's getting up there in size though; over 5ft means it’s a bit much for beginners, and at over 7ft, it's solidly in the advanced and expert territory. The period is 14 seconds, which is a nice long groundswell that should wrap into the point well.
Don't get too hyped on the period around Tuesday the 1st of September. That WNW swell has a short, weak period of just 8 seconds, so it’s going to be crumbly and lack the punch we really want at this break.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is mostly small or blown out. The standouts are Saturday the 29th of August for a clean little session, but the real target is Saturday the 5th of September for the biggest, cleanest swell of the period.
Stay salty,
Rusty
