The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next week or so is pretty quiet, but we’ve got some real promise brewing for the end of July if you can hold on.
The water’s sitting at 70°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so the spring suits can stay at home.
We kick off Wednesday the 15th with tiny 1ft swell out of the SW at Haggerty's (reef and point). It’s a very consistent break and the morning’s got a light cross-off S breeze, so the surface is clean – you could get a few knee-high noodles if you’re desperate, but it’s ordinary. The combined energy is only 153, so it’s weak. That afternoon the wind swings cross-on and picks up, so forget it.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are more of the same: 1ft SW swell, clean enough in the mornings with cross-off breezes, but the energy is low (163 down to 137) and the waves are just limp. Saturday the 18th sees a tiny bump to 2ft SW swell, still clean in the morning, but the energy is only 198 – nothing to get excited about.
Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 22nd stay small, 2ft to 3ft, mostly cross or cross-on winds, so it’s choppy and poor. The energy climbs a bit (up to 353 on Tuesday afternoon) but the quality is missing. Wednesday the 22nd morning has a cross-off breeze and 2ft SW swell with 241 energy – surfable but still very ordinary.
Then we hit a real low point Thursday the 23rd: the swell drops to 1ft SSW, and the combined energy plummets to 89 – that’s weak. The afternoon goes glassy with a 1ft WSW swell and a period of just 6 seconds, energy down to 12. That’s barely a ripple.
Friday the 24th stays small and messy with a cross-on breeze.
Now here’s where it gets interesting. Saturday the 25th, a standout: the morning brings 2ft SSW groundswell with a period of 21 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell, real push. The wind is glassy (SW, 3 mph), so it’s dead calm. The combined energy is 481, which is moderate, and the conditions are clean. Because of that long period, Haggerty's reef and point setup should handle it well – good shape, longer gaps between sets. This is the pick of the whole run, but it’s more than a week away, so don’t lock it in just yet.
Sunday the 26th morning is also promising: 2ft SW swell, period 19 seconds, a light cross-off SSW breeze at 6 mph, and clean surf. Energy is strong at 642. The afternoon goes cross-on again.
Monday the 27th morning: 3ft SW swell, 18-second period, light cross-off S breeze, clean, and energy at 573 – another solid morning.
Tuesday the 28th morning: 3ft SW swell, 16-second period, cross-off SSE breeze, clean, energy 430.
Wednesday the 29th: both morning and afternoon are clean with cross-off breezes, 2ft SW swell, 16-second period, and energy around 280 – consistent and surfable.
Thursday the 30th tails off again with 2ft SSW swell and light cross-off wind, but the energy drops to 159.
So the real standouts are Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th mornings. The 25th is the best on offer – glassy, clean, long-period groundswell hitting that reef and point perfectly. Get it while it’s good, but keep an eye on the forecast as it gets closer.
Rusty.
