The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Haggerty's.
Alright, overall we're looking at a pretty quiet run of small, clean waves. The big story is the long period groundswell that rolls in from time to time, but it's coming in small and gets pretty easily messed up by the afternoon winds. The energy is moderate at best, and the best windows are going to be the mornings when that offshore breeze cleans things up. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
We kick off Friday the 17th with a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW, but it's got a crazy long 19 second period. The SSE breeze is a nice cross-off, so it's clean. The combined energy is only 189, so it's weak, but it's surfable. Saturday the 18th morning is a touch better, with the swell bumping up to 2ft from the SW, still with a solid 18 second period. The energy climbs to 281, and the same cross-off wind keeps it clean. Sunday the 19th morning is similar, 2ft, 17 second period, energy at 235, clean again.
Now, Monday the 20th morning sees a jump in size to 3ft from the SSW, with a 15 second period. The energy is solid at 482, but it's a bit of a mixed bag with the conditions. Tuesday the 21st morning is a real standout for the first week. The swell drops a touch to 3ft from the SSW, with a 13 second period, but the cross-off wind from the S at 6 mph is light, and the energy is still a healthy 489 – it's a good, clean session.
The afternoons are pretty much a write-off all week as the wind swings onshore and chops things up. But the mornings are the golden ticket.
Looking further out, there's a real beauty on the horizon. On Saturday the 25th of July, the morning session is looking like the best of the whole run. We've got a 2ft swell from the SSW, but with a very long 21 second period, and the energy is pumping at 714. The wind is a light cross-off from the SSW at 6 mph. It's going to be glassy and clean. That long period groundswell will be a treat for the point and reef.
Sunday the 26th morning is also worth a look with a 4ft swell from the SSW, but the wind is a bit tricky – it's a light cross-shore, so the surface won't be as perfect as the Saturday before. The remaining mornings through the end of the month and into the start of August are all small, clean, and rideable, but nothing that's going to blow your mind. The period is still long, but the size is lacking.
So, to wrap it up: the absolute best bet is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. That's your standout. Friday the 17th through Tuesday the 22nd mornings are also worth a paddle for the clean conditions and that long period texture. A 1ft swell with a 19 second period will be long, clean lines peeling down the point. After that, it's a waiting game for the next pulse.
Stay frothy,
Rusty.
