The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Haggerty's. It’s a bit of a slow start, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board just yet.
We’ve got a stretch of very small, weak swell coming through. The first few days are pretty flat with a tiny 1ft SSW swell. The water is sitting at 70°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. The combined energy is weak, around 139, and it’s just not doing much. Tuesday the 14th is a write-off with a cross-onshore breeze chopping it up. Wednesday morning the 15th might offer a few clean-ish lines with that light cross-off wind, but we’re still talking about very ordinary waves.
Honestly, you’re looking at a gap of several days where it’s pretty marginal. The swell stays small and the wind is often cross-onshore. It’s not until Saturday the 18th that we see a tiny bump. The morning of the 18th has a 2ft SW swell with a solid 18-second period – that’s some long-period groundswell energy. The combined energy is moderate at 281, and with a light cross-off breeze, it’ll be clean. But for a reef and point break like Haggerty's, those long-period swells can sometimes be a bit too straight, so it might not be as good as the numbers suggest.
The real standout, the one that has me a little more excited, is the morning of Tuesday the 21st. We’ve got a 3ft SSW swell, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 330. The period is 16 seconds, so again, a nice groundswell. The wind is a light cross-off, so the face will be clean. It’s not huge, but it’s the best looking window in the whole forecast. The swell direction is SSW, which is a little off the optimum WNW direction, but for the size, it’ll still work.
Further out, the 25th of July brings a bigger push of energy, but the wind is a problem. The morning has a 2ft swell with a very long 21-second period and combined energy of 403. But it’s onshore and messy. The afternoon jumps to 4ft SSW with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 683. That’s a lot of energy, but again, it’s cross-onshore and choppy. It’s a kite surfer’s day, not a paddle surfer’s.
The 26th of July morning has a clean window with a 2ft SW, 19-second period and a combined energy of 700. The wind is light cross, so it’s rideable, but the long period and small size might make it a bit flat.
The rest of the fortnight is similar – small swell, light winds, but nothing that really jumps out. The crowds at Haggerty's can be an issue, so keep that in mind if you’re chasing the clean windows.
So, to wrap it up: the best bet is the morning of Tuesday the 21st. It’s not massive, but it’s clean and has the most grunt for the conditions. If you’re desperate, the morning of the 18th is okay too. The bigger stuff later in the month is promising but less certain.
Rusty out.
