The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a lengthy stretch ahead, but I’ll be honest with you – the first week or so is gonna be a real struggle. The swell is small and the wind is mostly rubbish, so we’re looking at a long wait for anything decent.
The outlook starts off on Friday the 21st of August, but don’t get excited. The swell is tiny at 1ft from the SSW, with a long period of 13 seconds. The wind is a cross-on 9 mph, and the combined energy is weak (125). It’s just poor surf conditions. That same story basically runs through the next several days. We’ve got a gap of almost no good surf right through until Wednesday the 26th of August. Through Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd, the swell stays around 1.0ft to 1ft, and the wind is always cross-on, messing things up. The combined energy does bump up to 206 on Sunday morning, but it's still small and choppy.
Even on Wednesday the 26th of August, things are only just surfable. The swell is still only 2ft from the SW, but the wind finally shifts to a light cross-off breeze from the SSE at 6 mph. That cleans it up nicely. The combined energy is moderate (162). It’s not pumping, but it’s the first time the conditions are actually clean. That sets the pattern for the mornings – Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of August also have light cross-off winds and clean conditions, but the swell is still only 1ft to 2ft. The period is long, 14 to 19 seconds, so there’s some energy in the water, but it’s just not big enough to get excited about.
Now, the real standout is going to be Friday the 4th of September. That’s the one to mark on the calendar. The morning of Friday the 4th of September we finally get a clean forecast with a light cross-off breeze from the SSE at 6 mph, and the swell is 2ft from the SW with a period of 17 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (316), which is the best we’ve seen in this whole run. The wind is clean, the swell is a decent size for this spot, and the direction is a solid match for the optimum at Haggerty's (WNW). This is the best on offer by a long shot.
The spot is Haggerty's, a reef and point break that’s very consistent. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but it can get crowded – it says “often”, so expect to share the lineup. The water temperature is about 69°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
The Saturday the 5th of September morning is also worth a look, with a clean 2ft swell and light offshore wind, but the energy drops a bit (231) and it’s not quite as good as the Friday.
So, the long and short of it: you’ve got a long, frustrating start with tiny, choppy surf for the first week. The best window is Friday the 4th of September morning. That’s your pick. If you can wait it out, it’ll be worth it.
Stay salty.
