The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, we’ve only got the one spot on the radar for this stretch, Haggerty’s, and it’s a reef and point setup that’s beginner-friendly and very consistent. The water temp’s about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The first real blip of decent surf shows up on Saturday morning, July 18th. It’s small, only 2ft of swell from the SW, but the period is a juicy 18 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The wind’s a light cross-off from the S at 6 mph, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy’s moderate at 256. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Sunday morning, July 19th, is a carbon copy – same 2ft SW swell, 17-second period, light S cross-off. Clean again, but still small.
We hit a bit of a lull from Monday morning through to Thursday morning, July 23rd. The surf’s small, winds are messy, and the conditions are poor. Expect a few days of flat, choppy nonsense.
Then Thursday afternoon, July 23rd, throws a curveball – the swell drops to 1ft, but the period jumps to 26 seconds. That’s ridiculously long. The energy’s moderate at 262, but the wind is a moderate cross-on from the W at 16 mph. It’s going to be a choppy, bumpy mess, and that kind of period tends to race past beach breaks. For a reef point like Haggerty’s, it might just wrap in, but the wind kills it.
Friday morning, July 24th, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell is still 2ft from the SSW, period 24 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-off from the S at 6 mph. The combined energy is 400 – solid moderate. It’s clean. That’s a proper dawny on the cards.
Saturday morning, July 25th, is another good one. Same 2ft SSW swell, 21-second period, light S cross-off. Clean with 327 energy. Sunday morning, July 26th, is a bit marginal – 3ft SSW swell, 19-second period, but the wind is light cross-shore. The energy jumps to 876, which is getting strong, but the cross-shore wind will put a ripple on it.
Now, the real standout. Monday morning, July 27th. The swell is a solid 3ft from the SW, period 18 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-off from the S at 6 mph. The combined energy is 842 – strong. The conditions are clean. This is the best session of the whole forecast. The swell’s big enough to have some push, but not so big it’s out of control. That reef will handle the long-period groundswell beautifully.
Tuesday morning, July 28th, is another cracker. The swell is 4ft from the SW, period 16 seconds, and again a light S cross-off. The energy is 1023 – that’s proper strong. Clean conditions. That’s a close second to Monday, but the swell is a touch bigger and the period is slightly shorter. Still, if you’re an intermediate or above, you’ll be smiling.
Wednesday morning, July 29th, is still good – 3ft SSW swell, 16 seconds, light cross-off from the SSE. Energy is 565, clean. After that, the surf tapers off through the end of the month and into the start of August, with smaller swell and onshore winds taking over. The last few days are poor, with small, weak waves and cross-shore wind.
So, bottom line: If you’ve got a board, your best bet is Monday morning, July 27th at Haggerty’s. That 3ft SW groundswell with light cross-off wind is as good as it gets in this window. Tuesday morning, July 28th, is the runner-up. Get out there before the crowds roll in – it’s a spot that’s often busy, so you’ll want to be early.
Rusty.
