The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Exiles over the next couple of weeks.
We’re starting off with a bit of a slow patch. The first waves are rideable from Friday the 17th, but they’re tiny and the energy is weak. The water is sitting at 71°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual, so you’ll be in for a surprise bath. The early sessions are clean with a light offshore breeze, but the swell is only 1ft from the SW. The energy is low (168) and the period is pushing 19 seconds, which is a long one. That long period will make the waves a bit drawn out and straight at a place like this, so it’s not the best for a beach setup. Stick to the point if you’re paddling out.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a bit of a mixed bag. The mornings are clean and the swell picks up to 2ft from the SW. The energy is moderate now (252 and 235), and the period is still long (17-18 seconds). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Sunday afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-shore wind, so call it early.
Now, the good stuff starts Monday the 20th. The morning brings a jump in swell to 4ft from the SSW, with a period of 15 seconds. The energy is up to 567, which is solid. The wind is light and cross-offshore, making for clean conditions. This is a real standout. The swell is still a bit long, but it’s a proper groundswell and the direction is spot on for Exiles. It’s a bit small for a classic, but for the size, it’ll be punchy. The afternoon goes cross-onshore and choppy, so get out early.
Tuesday the 21st is similar – 4ft from the SSW in the morning, clean with a light wind and energy at 599. Another cracking morning session. The afternoon blows out again.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are a write-off – onshore winds and messy conditions. The swell drops right back.
Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th bring a new pulse. The mornings are clean again, with 2ft from the SSW, but the period is very long, pushing 24 seconds on Friday and 21 seconds on Saturday. The energy is strong (495 and 619). This is a classic long-period groundswell. It’s a bit small but the energy is there, and with the light offshore wind, the point will be glassy. The long period means you’ll have to wait for the sets, but the waves will be lined up nicely.
Sunday the 26th is another good morning with 3ft from the SSW, 19-second period, and energy at 646. Very clean. The pattern holds: mornings are the go, afternoons are blown out.
The rest of the first week of August is a repeat of the same story. The trend is for small, clean morning waves with moderate energy, but the wind is your enemy in the afternoons. From Monday the 27th through to Thursday the 30th, the mornings are all looking good, with swell ranging from 3ft to 3ft from the SSW. The energy stays strong (625 to 625). The best of the bunch is Monday the 27th with a light offshore breeze, so the waves will be as clean as a whistle.
Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August look pretty poor. The winds are cross-shore or cross-onshore, and the swell is small and weak. Not worth paddling out.
So, the standout is any morning from Monday the 20th through to Thursday the 30th, especially the 20th, 21st, and 27th. The swell is small but consistent, the energy is good, and the wind is offshore or light cross-offshore, giving you clean, glassy waves. The long period makes it best for the point, where you’ll get those long, waiting walls. It’s a bit inconsistent, so you’ll be sitting and waiting, but when the sets come through, it’ll be worth it. Crowds are possible at Exiles, so expect a few others out with the same idea.
This is Rusty, signing off.
