The Lowdown
Alright, it's Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Exiles.
Frankly, it's a pretty grim outlook for the next couple of weeks. The good news is this is a point break that's fairly exposed to the swell, so when it's on, it's on. But right now, we're looking at a long stretch of small, weak surf and tricky winds. The water is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing crazy, but nice if you're in.
The whole period kicks off with a bit of weak energy on Wednesday, August 19th. We've got a long-period groundswell from the SSW at 2 ft, with a period of 15 seconds – that's a proper long-period swell, which for a point break like Exiles is actually a good thing. The combined energy is weak (258). The wind is a light cross-off at 3 mph, so the morning will be clean, but the waves are just too small to get excited about. The afternoon is a write-off with a cross-on westerly at 12 mph.
From Thursday, it just gets smaller. Thursday the 20th morning has 2 ft of SSW swell, still clean, but barely surfable. Then Friday through to the end of the month is a real bummer – we're talking 1.0 ft to 1 ft swells, combined energy dropping into the 100s, and almost every afternoon stuffed by a moderate westerly cross-on at 12 mph. There are a few mornings with a clean look, but the waves are just too small to do anything with. It's a long, flat patch.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday, August 29th. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the SSW, with a 17-second period – that's a very long groundswell, lots of energy. The combined energy jumps to 391 (moderate), so there's some power there. The morning wind is a light cross-shore, so it'll be a bit lumpy, but it's the most promising we've seen in a while.
But the standout? That's gotta be Sunday, August 30th morning. We've got a 3 ft SSW swell, still a long 15-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 365 (moderate). The real magic is the wind: glassy. Dead flat, offshore conditions. For a point break, that's as good as it gets. The waves will be clean, lined up, and the long period will give them some punch. This is a morning for the advanced crew – the swell is solid but not huge, and the consistency should be there. It's not often you get a glassy window on a point like this, so mark that in the calendar.
Monday, August 31st morning is also decent – 3 ft SSW, cross-off wind, clean. But nowhere near as good as Sunday. After that, it tails off again into the first few days of September with tiny, weak swells and onshore winds.
So, the long and short of it: a lot of flat, frustrating days, but one absolute beauty on Sunday, August 30th morning. If you can only paddle out once in the next two weeks, that's your window.
