The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf at Deadman’s, a point break that don’t break often and can get a crowd. Water temp’s about 69°F, way warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first few days are a dud. Friday the 17th has a tiny 1ft SW swell with a real long 19-second period, but the onshore wind and poor conditions kill it. Energy’s weak at 175. Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th stay small, around 2ft, with onshore or cross-onshore wind – flat and messy. Energy hits 613 on Sunday arvo but it’s still marginal.
Monday the 20th afternoon shows some life. Wind shifts to a light cross-offshore breeze from the west, swell sits at 3ft from the SSW with a 15-second period. Combined energy’s 704 – moderate. Clean but small.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd stay similar: 3ft SSW swell, west to WNW cross-offshore wind, energy between 385 and 620. Workable for a small-wave session.
Thursday the 24th afternoon is a standout. Light cross-offshore west wind, swell 3ft from the SSW, energy 731. Clean conditions at a spot that rarely breaks – worth a paddle.
The best window is Friday the 31st afternoon. A solid 5ft S swell, 14-second period, combined energy 982, and light cross-offshore wind from the west. Expect very good surf. The southerly swell lines up real nice with the break’s optimum westerly direction. This one’s for the intermediate crew and up.
Saturday the 1st of August drops to 3ft to 4ft S swells, shorter period around 11–12 seconds, energy down to 340–456. Good wind in the arvo but not the standout.
So, mark your calendar for Thursday the 24th arvo and especially Friday the 31st arvo. That’s your best shot at clean waves at Deadman’s.
Rusty.
