Deadman's Surf Forecast and Surf Report

We're looking at Deadman's. This is a point break that rarely breaks, so when it does, you've got to be on it. The water is a whopping 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual.

We've got a bit of a slow start, but the first real window of opportunity kicks off on Friday afternoon, the 24th of July. We've got a 2ft swell from the southwest, but the period is a massive 24 seconds. That's a very long-period groundswell, and it's packing a moderate energy (520). The wind is a light cross-off from the west, which is going to keep things clean. For a point break, that long period is a beautiful thing. Expect clean, shaped-up waves.

The next couple of days, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, offer similar patterns. The mornings are a bit messy with a cross-on wind, but the afternoons clean up nicely with that cross-off breeze. Swell builds slightly to 3ft, still with a long period and moderate energy. It's a solid run of afternoon sessions.

Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th see the swell nudge up to around 3ft to 4ft, with the energy climbing into the moderate range (720-746). The Tuesday afternoon session on the 28th is a standout. The wind is light cross-off, the swell is 3ft from the SSW, and the forecast is for "very good surf conditions." This is the best on offer in the first week.

After Wednesday the 29th, things get dicey. The wind turns onshore and the quality drops. The swell builds again at the end of the month. On Friday the 31st of July, we see a solid 5ft swell from the south, but the period drops to 14 seconds. The energy is strong (1393), and the afternoon wind is a clean cross-off. This is a bigger swell, but it's still manageable for experienced intermediates.

The 1st of August keeps the 5ft to 6ft range, with the afternoons again cleaning up. But by the 2nd of August, the swell is fading fast, dropping to 3ft and the period is down to 10-11 seconds. The energy drops off.

From the 3rd of August onwards, we're looking at a long gap of poor conditions. The swell is tiny, the wind is often onshore, and the energy is weak. The numbers drop to double digits, and the comment is "poor surf conditions" for days on end. There's nothing to recommend here from the 3rd through the 8th.

So, the two real standouts are the Tuesday afternoon, the 28th of July, for its excellent quality and clean conditions on a 3ft long-period swell, and the Friday afternoon, the 31st of July, for the biggest, most powerful swell of the window, though with a shorter period. Remember, this break rarely breaks, so the crowds are likely. If you can get on it during those windows, you'll be in for a treat.
