The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on what’s on the menu at Latigo Point over the next couple of weeks.
It’s been a bit slow out there, but there’s a little pulse of energy starting to stir. The first real chance to get wet that’s worth talking about is on Saturday, July 18th. We’ve got a tiny 2ft south-west groundswell rolling in with a very long 18-second period. This is proper long-period energy, the kind that loves a point break like Latigo. The water is way warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 70°F, with an anomaly of 7°F – that’s very unusual, a real treat. The winds are a light cross-offshore from the west, so the face should be clean. Combined swell energy is moderate at 297. It’s small, but with that period, you’ll feel the push. The thing is, this wave is known to be inconsistent and rarely breaks, so you’ll need to be patient. Also, crowds are often a factor here, so get in early.
Moving into Sunday, July 19th, the morning is a write-off with onshore winds and poor conditions. The afternoon picks up a bit with 3ft south-west swell and clean cross-off winds, but it’s still a marginal call. The real energy starts to build through the week. Monday, July 20th sees a jump in the swell to 4ft, but the wind is cross-onshore in the morning, and the period has dropped to 11 seconds. It’s still a bit messy.
You’ll want to keep your eye on Friday, July 24th. The afternoon shows a solid 4ft south swell with a very light cross-shore breeze and a combined energy of 706. The period is a moderate 13 seconds. This is the start of a better run. Saturday, July 25th afternoon is a standout. The swell is only 2ft, but it’s from the south-west with a very long 21-second period and clean cross-offshore winds. The combined energy is strong at 650. That’s a clean, lined-up wave for the patient surfer.
The consistency picks up through the last week of July. Monday, July 27th afternoon offers 3ft south-west swell, a 19-second period, and clean cross-off winds. Energy is strong at 765. Thursday, July 30th afternoon is the best of the lot. The swell jumps to 5ft from the south, with a 15-second period, light cross-shore breeze, and a combined energy of 962 – that’s strong. This is your best bet for some size and form.
As we roll into August, the energy holds. Friday, August 1st morning has 5ft south swell, but the wind is onshore. The afternoon is better with 4ft south-west swell and gentle cross-shore winds. The energy is still solid at 684. After that, it starts to fade. Sunday, August 2nd is a write-off with poor conditions. Overall, the standout is definitely Thursday, July 30th afternoon for the best combination of size and conditions. The second week is a bit of a gamble, but the energy is there.
Rusty.
