The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The forecast for Latigo Canyon is a tough one to call for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long stretch of mostly small, sleepy waves, with a few windows that might just get the heart beating a little faster.
First up, Tuesday 18th August through to the end of the week is pretty flat. Swell is tiny, around 1ft to 2ft, and the wind is mostly a bit messy or just not helping. The best you can say is the water is about average for this time of year, but the wave energy is weak (combined energy of all swells directed here is between 119 and 286). You’d be scratching for anything rideable, so it’s a good time to check the wax job or just enjoy the beach.
We hit a bit of a dead zone from about Thursday 27th into the first week of September. The swell is staying under 2ft, and the wave energy is low (between 132 and 244). It’s not looking good for a paddle.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. On Wednesday 26th August, we see a bit of a pulse. The swell picks up to 4ft, coming from the West, but the period is a short 7 seconds. That’s a windswell, not a groundswell, so it’ll be a bit less organised but with the wind going cross-off in the afternoon, it could clean up nicely. The combined energy is moderate (328). Not a world-beater, but after a long drought, it’s the standout option.
Then, look ahead to Saturday 29th August. The morning has a 3ft swell from the SSW, still a long period of 17 seconds, and the wave energy is kicking up (505). The wind is light and blowing onshore, which is a shame, but that long period means there’s genuine grunt. The afternoon stays cross-shore, so it’s wonky. This is the other true standout on the chart, but it’s a bit of a gamble with the direction.
The following week, from 30th August to 2nd September, it’s back to small, weak surf. The swell hangs around 2ft to 3ft, but the energy drops off (between 130 and 457), and the wind is never quite right. The best bet is to keep an eye on that 26th Wednesday and the 29th Saturday morning, but we’re talking about a long period of mostly small stuff.
In short, don’t hold your breath for the next week. The 26th and 29th are your best shots, but they’re a week and a half away, so keep your fingers crossed.
