Alright, let’s see what’s cookin’ over the next couple weeks.
Gotta be straight with you – the first ten days are a real drag. We’re in a dry spell of small, weak, and mostly messy surf. The water’s a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, sittin’ at 66°, which feels nice on the skin, but the waves are just not deliverin’. The only real highlight is way out at the tail end of the period.
Kickin’ off Thursday the 9th through the weekend, it’s tiny. Around 3ft to 3ft of swell from the SSW, with a long 16-second period, so there’s some energy in the water (combined energy 439), but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore almost the whole time. It’s choppy and poor. Friday and Saturday are more of the same – small, wind-affected, and not worth gettin’ the wetsuit for. The swell energy drops through the weekend (294 to 325 range), and the period drops to 14-15 seconds, so those waves are losin’ their push.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are even smaller, down to 2ft-2ft, with energy fallin’ into the 100-200 range. The wind is a bit better on Monday morning (light onshore), but still not clean. Tuesday afternoon gets a moderate cross-shore chop from the west, which is just plain ugly.
Then we hit a real low. From Wednesday the 15th through Saturday the 18th, we’re lookin’ at tiny 1ft to 2ft swell. The only bright spot is Wednesday the 15th morning, where it goes glassy for a bit – but with only 1ft of swell (energy 189), it’s barely surfable. That’s a “maybe grab the longboard if you’re desperate” kind of morning.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sunday the 19th of July is the one to circle. The swell jumps up to 3ft-4ft from the SSE and then S, with a long 19-second period. The combined energy spikes hard – 1173 in the morning, and then a massive 2036 in the afternoon. That’s a serious pulse of energy. The wind on Sunday afternoon goes cross-offshore from the WNW, which means clean, lined-up waves. Latigo Canyon is a point break, so that long-period groundswell (19 seconds) will wrap in beautifully, offerin’ some proper shaped waves. The crowds can be around sometimes, but for a punchy, clean session like that, it’s absolutely worth it.
Monday the 20th keeps the size, with 7ft to 7ft from the south, but that’s gettin’ big. The period backs off to 15 seconds, and the wind is onshore or cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. That’s more for the experienced crew who can handle a bigger, less clean wave.
By Tuesday the 21st, it’s droppin’ back down to 5ft, and then the rest of the week fades back into small, weak conditions. The 19th and 20th are your only real window for anythin’ decent.
For the die-hards, the standout is Latigo Canyon on Sunday the 19th of July, especially the afternoon. Clean cross-offshore wind, a decent 4ft swell from the south with a very long 19-second period, and over 2000 units of combined energy. That’s the best call on the board.
The first week and a half are a write-off, so pick your battles. The big Sunday pulse is the only one worth plannin’ around.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the long-range.
Rusty.
