Table - best surf conditions forecast for Latigo Canyon over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s break down what’s in store for Latigo Canyon.
Truth is, the first week or so is pretty sleepy. The earliest any decent surf shows up is Saturday the 18th, so we’ve got a solid week of tiny, weak, and often choppy conditions. Don’t even bother paddling out before then – it’s mostly knee-high slop with messy wind.
The best window hits around Wednesday the 22nd. The swell starts to build that morning, with wave energy climbing (889) and it gets stronger into Thursday the 23rd. That’s when it really turns on. Swell heights reach about 5-5.5 ft from the south, with a 15-second period – proper groundswell energy behind it. The energy numbers are strong (1426 on Thursday morning), so this isn’t a tease. The size puts it in intermediate territory, so leave the foam boards at home. Morning winds are light cross-onshore, so a little bit of texture, but still rideable.
Water temp sits around 68°F, with the anomaly coming in about 4.5°F warmer than the long-term average for the spot, so that’s a notably warm feel for mid-July – a nice little bonus.
If you can time it right, Thursday the 23rd afternoon is your standout. Swell holds at about 5.5 ft from the south, and the wind switches to a moderate westerly that goes cross-offshore, cleaning things right up. It won’t be glass, but it’s the best we’ll see. Keep in mind this spot can get busy, and it’s exposed to that SW swell, so expect company.
Before that, Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have small potential – maybe 3-4 ft – but winds are more onshore or cross and conditions are marginal, so it's a gamble.
After the 23rd, the swell fades through the 25th and 26th, dropping below 3 ft with some long-period leftovers that might not wrap into Latigo Canyon well. Conditions stay light, but the energy is gone.
So here’s the call: if you want waves, target Wednesday the 22nd through Friday the 24th. Thursday afternoon is the best of the bunch – clean, punchy chest-to-head-high surf.
Stay stoked.
