The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, switching to feet and knots for the imperial crew. Let’s talk Pakalas.

Water temp is 80°F, which is right on the average for the season.

The first couple of days, Sunday 13th and Monday 14th, are tiny. Waves around 1 feet with hardly any energy (combined energy of all swells directed here: 54 to 143). Winds are glassy or light, but there’s nothing to ride.

Tuesday 15th sees a pulse of 2 feet from the SW with a long 20-second period and energy climbing to 445. The morning is clean with a cross-off breeze. It’s small but rideable.

Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th bring 2 to 3 feet from the SSW, periods of 16-18 seconds, and energy up to 643. Thursday morning is the pick: 2 feet, 16-second period, clean, and solid energy. Quality small wave surfing.

Friday 18th: the morning jumps to a short-period 7 feet from the east at 9 seconds, with energy hitting 1250. That’s a lot of water moving, but it’s short-period and from the wrong direction. More for experts if they want a challenge. The afternoon drops to 3 feet from the SSW but with wind at 15 knots.

Saturday 19th through Monday 21st: waves around 3 feet from the SSW, energy between 565 and 941. Winds are cross-off, light to moderate. Clean and consistent, but still small. The afternoon sessions on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st are noted as very good conditions.

Tuesday 22nd: morning has 3 feet from the south at 13 seconds. The afternoon shifts to 4 feet from the east at a short 8 seconds. The energy is moderate (470), but that east swell is a bit awkward.

Now the big one: Wednesday 23rd September afternoon. 6 feet from the east with an 11-second period and huge energy (1472). Light cross-off wind, clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers only. Not the ideal south swell direction, but the size and energy are the best of the run.

Thursday 24th and Friday 25th hold similar size (6 to 7 feet), but the period drops to 8-10 seconds and energy fades. Friday afternoon gets rain and 15 knot winds.

The weekend of 26th and 27th drops to 5 feet from the east with short periods (7-8 seconds) and moderate energy (396 to 629). Still cross-off, but junky.

Monday 28th finishes clean: 3 feet from the SSW with a long 17-second period and good energy (816). Light winds, clean. A nice little session for those who waited.

Best bet? Wednesday 23rd afternoon. Big swell, clean, but only for the experienced. Crowds are possible at Pakalas, so get there early.

Rusty out.
