The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about the waves coming up for Waimea Rivermouth. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is right on the money for this time of year, so nothing unusual going on there.
We're looking at a bit of a slow start, but don't write it off. Thursday the 20th is tiny, with thigh-high 0.5 ft swell from the SW, but the wind is glassy as a mirror. It's a beginner-friendly wave anyway, so if you're learning, that's your window. The combined energy is weak (191), but it's clean.
Friday the 21st is a write-off. The wind swings cross-on and the conditions get choppy. Save your energy.
Saturday the 22nd morning cleans up with a cross-off breeze, but it's still small at 0.6 ft. Not worth getting excited about.
Now, Sunday the 23rd morning is where things start to get interesting. Swell flips to the E and jumps up to 2 ft, but the period is a short 7 seconds. That's windswell, not groundswell, so it'll be a bit bumpy and on the dumpy side at the beach. The combined energy is moderate (414). The wind is clean, cross-off, so it's surfable, but not a standout.
The real highlight kicks off on Monday the 24th. The swell holds at 1 ft from the E, period drops to 6 seconds, but the energy is building (343). The wind stays clean and cross-off all through the day. Good, fun waves for the competent surfer. Tuesday the 25th is the real standout. The swell builds to 2 ft from the E, combined energy hits 505 (moderate to strong), and you've got light cross-off winds and a clean surface. That's the best session of the first week. It's still fine for most.
Wednesday the 26th drops back in size to 0.7 ft, but the period jumps to 14 seconds from the SSW. That's a proper groundswell, with very good energy (561). The wind is light and cross-off, so it'll be clean. The long period means it'll have some push, but it's small. Thursday the 27th is even better for the long-period groundswell lovers. Swell is 1.0 ft from the S, period 17 seconds, and combined energy is pumping at 803 (strong). The wind goes glassy in the afternoon. That's a special day for a Rivermouth wave – the long period will make it line up nicely.
The second week sees a return to smaller, cleaner conditions. Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th have waist-high 0.7 ft to 0.8 ft SSW swell, with long periods and clean cross-off winds. Consistent, easy, fun waves. The combined energy stays moderate (247-363).
Then we get a spike on Monday the 31st with a bigger 1 ft E swell in the afternoon, but it's short period (7 seconds). Tuesday the 1st of September is clean and small again with 0.6 ft from the S at 19 seconds – very long period, but tiny.
The real grand finale is the first few days of September. On Wednesday the 2nd, the swell picks up to 2 ft from the E with a better 8-second period, and it's offshore from the NE with light winds. Combined energy is very strong (669). Thursday the 3rd morning is glassy, with 1 ft E swell and huge energy (839). That's the standout of the whole outlook. Friday the 4th is glassy all day, with a 2 ft E swell and 9-second period, and energy is off the charts (874). This is the best bet – a long-range standout that looks promising. It's still small enough for most.
All in all, the best on offer is the Tuesday the 25th and the first few days of September, especially Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th. The crowds here can be "sometimes" an issue, so on those days, get there early.
Rusty.
