Alright, Rusty here, breaking it down for you in feet and Fahrenheit.
We’re looking at Waimea Rivermouth – a spot that picks up a fair bit of swell, so even the quieter days have something to offer. Water temp is about 79°, right where it should be for the season.
First few days are a slow roll. Sunday July 5th has small 3ft SSW swell pushing in. Rideable, but with a moderate breeze and moderate energy (518), it’s gutless. Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th morning are similar – clean but small, energy fading a bit (426 to 362). You can get wet, but don’t expect much.
Things kick into gear Tuesday afternoon the 7th, though. Swell jumps to about 6ft from the E, short period of 8 seconds. That’s a choppy period for a beach break, but the energy hits 643, and with light ENE winds, it’ll be clean. Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th keep the consistency: 5 to 6ft E swell, same short period, light breezes, and energy in the strong zone (400-616). For a beginner-friendly spot, that’s super fun, clean conditions.
Friday the 10th holds with 5 to 5ft E swell and the lightest winds – 6 mph from the ENE. Silky surface. Then Saturday the 11th is a weird one: a tiny 2ft SW swell in the morning drops to weak energy (173), but the afternoon snaps right back to 6ft E swell with strong energy (599). That afternoon is the session.
The big standout? No question: Friday morning, July 17th. Swell is 6ft from the E, period 8 seconds, energy solid at 530 – but the wind is listed as *glass*. Dead calm, mirror-flat water. That’s a rare, clean window at a rivermouth that can get bumpy. It’s not too big, the quality will be there, and with light offshores, that’s the morning to circle on your calendar.
The rest of the second week keeps pumping – Saturday the 18th through Monday the 20th – with consistent 5 to 6ft E swell and light to gentle breezes, but nothing matches that glassy perfection of the 17th. A few long-period W groundswell pulses on the 14th and 15th (17-16 seconds) are interesting, but that long period tends to make the rivermouth section straighten out. Better for points than this spot.
All in all, a solid run for Waimea Rivermouth. Take it easy early, then get stoked for that glassy Friday.
Rusty.
