Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s coming up for Waimea Rivermouth.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but once things get going, there’s a real nice window of clean, friendly surf on the way. The water temp is sitting at about 78°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first real action kicks off on Friday morning, July 3rd. We’re looking at a small but punchy 4ft swell from the east, with a short period of 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly but still fun. The wind is a light cross-off breeze at 9 mph, keeping things tidy. Wave energy is moderate (340), so there’s enough push to get you moving. This is a good one for getting your feet wet.
The standout window, though, is Saturday July 4th through Sunday July 5th. Saturday morning serves up a 2ft swell from the south with a very long 21-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy, 585 (moderate energy). The long period means it’ll wrap in cleanly at the rivermouth, and with consistent cross-off winds around 9 mph, it’s going to be glassy and well-shaped. Sunday keeps the good vibes rolling with a 3ft SSW swell, still packing a long 18-second period and wave energy hitting 797 (moderate to strong). The wind stays friendly. This is your best bet for clean, cruisy waves without the crowd stress, though crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get in early.
After that, the surf stays surfable but drops off a little. Monday July 6th still has 3ft SSW swell, but the wind picks up to 12 mph in the afternoon, getting a bit bumpy. Tuesday July 7th sees a jump to 6ft from the east later in the day, but it’s short-period (8 seconds) and windier, so it’ll be messier.
Looking into the second week, Wednesday July 8th offers the biggest swell of the run: 6ft from the east, but with a very short 7-second period. That’s a lot of chop and not much shape – better for the experts if you’re brave, but not a standout. From Thursday July 9th through the weekend, the swell drops back to 2-3ft, mostly from the west with a long period (15-17 seconds), which cleans up nicely at the rivermouth. The wind stays light and cross-off, making for some long, lined-up rides. Monday July 13th and Tuesday July 14th are worth a look, with 2-3ft west swell, long period, and very light winds – that’ll be silky smooth.
Overall, if you’re after the best of the next two weeks, point your board at Saturday July 4th and Sunday July 5th. Clean conditions, long-period groundswell, and enough energy to have a blast without it being a battle. Get on it.
Rusty.
