The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a proper look at what’s cookin’ at Waimea Rivermouth over the next 16 days.
First thing’s first – we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first few days are looking pretty ordinary, nothing to get too excited about until we hit the back half of the week. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no wild surprises there.
Monday the 17th is a write-off for paddle surfing. We’ve got a 6ft ESE swell pushing in with a short 8 second period and a moderate cross-breeze, creating a real chop fest. Combined wave energy is moderate at 702 but the conditions are just messy. By Monday afternoon it drops to 5ft and still poor. Tuesday’s not much better either, with tiny 2ft S swell and cross winds. You’d be better off staying home.
Now, things start to turn around Wednesday morning the 19th with a 3ft E swell but still poor quality. However, Wednesday afternoon sees a glassy session with a tiny 1ft S swell – not much size, but the wind goes glass. That’s about as clean as it gets but it’s really small.
Thursday the 20th stays glassy but small, with 2ft SW swells. The period jumps to a very long 18 seconds, which is proper groundswell. At a river mouth like this, that long period can actually make the waves a bit straight and tricky, but it’ll be clean. Energy is moderate (194).
Here comes the real standout – Friday morning the 21st. We’ve got glassy conditions, barely a breath of wind, and a clean 2ft SSW groundswell with a 17 second period. Combined energy is 216, which is moderate, but the conditions are spot on. This is the kind of glassy, lined-up morning that makes it all worth it. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is the pick of the early period.
Saturday the 22nd afternoon also looks sweet – glassy again with 2ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, and energy building to 263. Another very clean session on offer.
Now, hold onto your board – from Sunday the 23rd through to Tuesday the 27th, we see a proper pulse of E swell. Sunday morning kicks off with 4ft E swell at a short 7 seconds, but the winds are clean cross-off. By Sunday afternoon we’re looking at 6ft E, still clean. Combined energy jumps to 446 – that’s moderate but punchy for this spot.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th keep the E swell going, with clean conditions. Tuesday afternoon the 25th is an absolute ripper – 6ft E swell, glassy winds, and energy hitting 641. That’s strong wave energy for this break. The swell direction is perfect, matching the optimum S direction for the spot. This is the best session of the whole forecast. The waves will be solid for a beginner break – maybe a bit too much for total beginners, but for anyone with a bit of time in the water, this is going to be fun.
Wednesday the 26th has a shift, with a 4ft SSE groundswell at 12 seconds and clean conditions in the afternoon. Energy is high at 794 – that’s strong. Still a good option.
Thursday the 27th is another absolute standout – glassy, clean, 6ft E swell in the morning dropping to 6ft in the afternoon, both with glassy winds and energy over 900. That is very strong wave energy. This break will be pumping and clean. Crowds are possible here sometimes, so get there early.
After that, the swell drops right off. Friday the 28th and through to the end of the month we’re looking at tiny 2ft to 2ft swells, mostly clean but very small. Energy drops below 100 for a couple of days – that’s weak. There’s a little bump on Monday the 1st of September with a 7ft E swell at 9 seconds and glassy conditions, energy 818 – that’s a promising long-range call but less certain this far out.
Overall, the real highlights are Tuesday the 25th afternoon and Thursday the 27th. Glassy, solid E swell, strong energy. Get on it.
Rusty.
