Table - best surf conditions forecast for Waimea Rivermouth over the next 16 days.

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer down at Waimea Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.

Right, the first few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got a solid run of surf coming through from Saturday onwards that’s looking pretty good. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.

Thursday is a write-off, to be honest. We’ve got rain showers and a moderate breeze blowing cross-off, but the wave energy is weak (585) and the report says it’s marginal. Not worth paddling out.

Friday morning sees an improvement. The wind eases to a gentle breeze, still cross-off, and the swell sits at 1.6m from the East with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy (354) is weak, but it’s clean. It’s a start, but it’s not the pick.

Saturday is where it begins to warm up. Swell holds at 2-1.7m from the East, period still short, but the energy climbs to moderate (526) and the conditions are clean. This is a solid, fun day for a beginner-friendly wave. The wind stays light cross-off all weekend.

Sunday and Monday look very similar – clean, cross-off winds, 2-1.7m East swell, moderate energy in the 540-571 range. Great consistency for a mellow session. Monday afternoon sees a brief shift to a tiny 0.7m SSW groundswell with a long 14-second period, but the energy is still weak (338).

Tuesday is a standout. Clear skies, a light breeze, and the swell bumps up to 1.7m from the East in the afternoon. The energy jumps to 675, which is solid moderate. This is the best of the first week – clean, punchy little waves for the Rivermouth.

Wednesday is interesting. The morning brings a tiny 0.8m West swell with a very long 15-second period, energy moderate (608). That’s a groundswell, and at a river mouth it could groom up nicely with the light offshore wind. The afternoon, however, sees a 2.1m East swell with a short 6-second period. That’s getting up there in size for a beginner spot, but the energy is strong (652). If you’re an experienced surfer, the afternoon session could have some grunt, but it’s short-period stuff.

Thursday and Friday continue the theme: 2-1.9m East swell, clean, cross-off winds. Energy levels stay moderate (495-610). It’s a reliable run of surf, but nothing massive.

Saturday the 18th drops off. A tiny 0.6m SSW groundswell with a long 14-second period, energy weak (208). The report calls it ordinary. Not worth chasing.

Sunday the 19th is the big one. We’ve got a 2.3m East swell rolling in with a 9-second period, and the combined energy hits a very strong 942. That’s a powerful swell. The morning is clean with a gentle cross-off breeze, but the afternoon goes cross-shore, which could mess things up. For a river mouth, this size is pushing into expert territory. If you’re good, the Sunday morning session is the absolute standout of the whole forecast. The energy is serious.

After that, the swell drops away. The 20th and 21st see a shift to a small, long-period S/SW groundswell (0.6-0.9m, 15-17 seconds). Energy is moderate (295-540). The longer period means cleaner waves, but it’s small. Definitely a step down from the weekend.

The last few days from the 22nd to the 24th are pretty weak. Swell drops to 0.7-0.9m, the period shortens, and the energy fades. Thursday the 24th is a write-off with poor conditions.

So, the pick of the entire period is Sunday the 19th morning for the big 2.3m East swell – that’s the one for the experts. For the everyday surfer, Tuesday the 14th is the most consistent and clean day of the first week. And don’t forget, Waimea Rivermouth is a beginner-friendly spot, so anything over 1.5m is getting tasty for the learners, and over 2.5m, it’s for the pros only.

Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so get in early when the swell’s good.

Rusty out.
