The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into what's cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Right now, it's pretty quiet. The water temp is about 80°F, which is right on the money for this time of year, so no need for a wetsuit.
We've got a slow start, but it builds. The first real action kicks off on Wednesday morning the 19th of August. There's a tiny bit of swell, but nothing special. The real story starts Thursday the 20th. We've got a long period SW groundswell with an 18-second period. That's a proper groundswell, meaning better shaped waves and more energy, but with longer waits between sets. The wind is glassy, which is a huge plus for clean conditions.
The pick of the early window is Friday the 21st of August. We've got glassy conditions, light winds, and a clean 2ft of SSW swell. The combined energy is moderate (250), so it's not a monster, but it's clean and fun. The break is Waimea Rivermouth, which is exposed to the south and works best on a south swell. It's a fairly consistent beginner-friendly spot, but crowds can show up sometimes. This is a solid option for a quiet session.
The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd brings a change. The swell direction swings to the east, and the period drops to 7 seconds. That's short-period windswell, so the waves will be a bit lumpier and less organized. The height picks up to 4ft to 5ft. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (400-375). It's clean, but don't expect the same quality as the groundswell earlier. Monday the 24th holds similar, with east swell at 5ft and a 10-second period, which is a bit better.
Then there's a lull mid-week, with the swell dropping right back down on the 26th. But don't sleep on Wednesday the 26th of August afternoon. The combined energy jumps to 518 (moderate), with a long period 18-second S swell. It's a solid, clean punchy groundswell again. A real standout for the second half of the week.
The real fireworks are looking like they could be in the second week. The morning of the 29th of August sees a 6ft east swell, combined energy at 624 (strong), and clean conditions. The afternoon jumps to 7ft, energy at 639. That's a big, powerful east swell, but at 7ft, it's getting into expert territory. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it's a windswell, but with that much energy and clean wind, it could be a wild ride. The 31st of August and the 1st of September also hold solid east swell in the 5ft-6ft range with moderate to strong energy.
Remember, this is a long-range forecast. The second week is promising, but less certain. Keep an eye on it.
So, to sum it up: Friday the 21st of August is your best bet for a clean, fun, glassy session. If you're after size and power, look to the 29th of August, but that's for the experienced crew.
Stay salty, and I'll see you out there.
