The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's run through what's coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Right from the start, we’ve got a solid run of surfable days ahead. The water temperature’s sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, nothing unusual there. The winds are looking clean through a lot of the period, with that cross-off or glassy setup showing up often.
The real standout is Saturday, July 25th. The morning session at Waimea Rivermouth is the one to circle. You’ve got an SSW swell running around 3 ft at a long 19 seconds, with clean cross-off winds from the east. The combined wave energy hits a strong 1032, so there’s real power in the water. That long period will wrap into the river mouth and give you some proper shape. Crowds can show up here, so plan accordingly.
Before that, the week prior stays active. Saturday afternoon July 18th bumps to 7 ft from the east with a short 6-second period—bit wind-affected, but it gets things moving. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th settle to around 4 ft to 4 ft from the east, with 8-second period, and nice cross-off or glassy winds. The energy sits in the 300s, so moderate but clean.
Tuesday the 21st through Thursday the 24th keeps the rhythm: SSW swells around 2 ft to 3 ft, with periods stretching from 14 up to 20 seconds. The winds stay favourable, mostly east or east-northeast at 6-9 mph, cross-off, keeping things clean. The combined energy climbs through the 800s toward the end of the week, so those morning sessions on Wednesday and Thursday are well worth the paddle out.
After Saturday the 25th peaks, Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are still very good. Swell drops to around 3 ft to 3 ft from the SSW, periods 15 to 16 seconds. Winds stay light, with some glassy spells, especially Monday afternoon.
Then we hit a slow patch. Tuesday the 28th drops off—surf down to 2 ft, weak energy in the 100s, and a messy cross-shore wind. That sets up a quiet stretch. There’s a spike on Wednesday July 29th morning—a massive 10 ft east swell with 14-second period and 3754 energy—but that’s too big for this break and only for experts. The afternoon calms down.
From there, Thursday the 30th is tiny but glassy, not much going on. Friday the 31st morning is marginal, but the afternoon brings back a clean 7 ft east swell with glassy conditions and energy at 772—worth a look. Into August, Saturday the 1st holds 6 ft to 7 ft from the east, short period around 7-8 seconds but clean. Sunday the 2nd eases to 4 ft, still clean with east-northeast winds, a decent end to the run.
If you only get one session in, make it Saturday July 25th morning. The week before is a steady build of quality, and the first weekend of August still has some energy, even if the period’s shorter.
Rusty out.
