The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. The only spot on the radar for this stretch is Waimea Rivermouth. It’s a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent break, exposed to the swell, and it likes swell from the south. The water temperature is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year.

We’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first decent action kicks off Thursday the 16th. It’s small, around 2ft from the west with a 14-second period, and the wind is light. The morning is cross-off, but the afternoon turns glassy. Expect good surf conditions, but it’s not going to blow your mind.

Friday the 17th stays small, 2ft, but the afternoon brings a shift to a SSW swell at 16 seconds, which is a better direction for this spot. Wind stays light and cross-off, keeping things clean. It’s still a small wave, but the energy is starting to pick up.

Saturday the 18th is more of the same with 2ft SSW swell, not a standout.

Now, Sunday the 19th is where things get interesting. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the east, but the period drops to 8 seconds – shorter period, choppier energy. The wind is still light cross-off, so it’s rideable. There’s a bit more push. Monday the 20th holds similar 4ft east swell, and the afternoon goes glassy with the wind dropping to 3 mph. That’s a nice window.

Tuesday the 21st sees a shift back to a south swell, 2ft to 3ft, with a solid 14-15 second period. The afternoon is glassy. Good, clean little waves.

The standout window is Wednesday the 22nd. The afternoon brings a 5ft east swell with a 13-second period and the energy is strong. The wind is light cross-off, so it’s clean. This is excellent surf, but at 5ft and with that kind of power, it’s definitely one for the experienced surfers. The morning is smaller, but the afternoon is the real deal.

Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th settle back to 2ft to 3ft, but with very long-period SSW groundswell (18-20 seconds). The energy stays high. These are clean, lined-up waves, but that long period might make the Rivermouth a bit straight. Still, good conditions.

Saturday the 25th is another big day. Morning swell at 3ft from the SSW with a 20-second period, and the energy is strong. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The wind is a gentle breeze, cross-off. Very clean.

The run continues through the 26th and 27th with decent, clean 3ft to 3ft SSW and S swells, though the wind picks up a little on the 26th.

After the 28th, things start to drop off. The 28th and 29th are glassy but small (2ft to 2ft), and the energy is low. By the 30th, it’s poor with cross-on wind and tiny 2ft swell. The 31st is a mixed bag: a 4ft easterly with short period and a tricky cross-shore wind in the morning, but the afternoon turns glassy and the swell jumps to 5ft. That last afternoon on the 31st could be a fun, clean surprise if you’re chasing something on the last day.

Overall, the best surf on offer is undeniably the Wednesday the 22nd afternoon and the Saturday the 25th morning. Those are the ones to circle. The 22nd has the bigger, punchier east swell, and the 25th has the long, clean SSW groundswell. Both are for experienced surfers.
