The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next 16 days.
Right off the bat, we’ve got some surf on offer, but it’s a mixed bag. The opening of the window, Monday the 13th, sees a clean 5ft swell from the east, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is a gentle cross-off, so the surface will be clean. The combined energy is moderate (523). Water temps are sitting at a normal 79°, so nothing unusual there. Not a huge day, but it’s a solid start.
Monday afternoon holds the same vibe, a little smaller at 5ft, still clean. The real change comes Tuesday the 14th. The swell drops right down to 2ft, but the period jumps to a very long 16 seconds. This is a proper groundswell from the west. That long period means it’s going to be better for a point or reef setup, not a straight beach break. At Waimea Rivermouth, a river mouth, this could line up nicely. Still light cross-off winds, clean conditions. The energy is moderate (507). This is the standout of the first week—small but full of potential.
Wednesday the 15th gets messy. The swell stays tiny at 3ft but the wind goes cross-shore, creating small ripples. The forecast turns marginal. We’ve got a gap of poor quality from Wednesday through to Friday morning, with winds staying cross or cross-off and the swell dropping to 2ft. The energy is weak (282). Not worth paddling out for.
Then on Friday the 17th afternoon, something flips. A 6ft swell from the east rolls in with a short 6-second period. The wind is light cross-off, so it’s clean, but that short period means it’s going to be a peaky, maybe a bit lumpy, close-out. Energy is moderate (489). Saturday the 18th looks similar, 6ft from the east with a 6-second period, still clean. This is a little more size, but it’s a short-period windswell. It’s surfable, but not a classic.
From Sunday the 19th onward, the swell drops again to 2ft and the period goes long (12-13 seconds) from the south. The energy is very weak (103). The conditions are described as “surfable but very ordinary.” This kind of small, long-period groundswell is tricky for a beach break.
The second week is a long, slow grind. From Monday the 20th to Friday the 24th, we’re mostly seeing 2ft to 3ft swell, with periods swinging from 7 seconds to 16 seconds. Winds are light and generally cross-off or even glassy on the morning of Friday the 24th. That’s a nice window of clean conditions, but the wave size is just very small. The energy is weak, mostly in the 100-300 range. You’ll be on a longboard, if anything.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th bring a little more life. A 2ft, 16-second SSW swell picks up, with moderate energy (346). The wind is still light cross-off. It’s clean, but tiny. By Sunday afternoon, we get a 5ft east swell with a 7-second period, which will be a little more punchy but still short-period.
The final days, Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th, fade back to 2ft-2ft, ordinary conditions, weak energy (100-173). The run is basically over.
Bottom line: The best window is right at the start. Tuesday the 14th with that 2ft, 16-second west swell and clean conditions is the pick of the bunch. It’s small, but it’s quality. The other flash of size is Friday 17th and Saturday 18th, but it’s short-period windswell. For the rest, it’s a longboard or a paddle. Expect crowds at Waimea Rivermouth (United States) as it’s a known spot, and it can get busy.
Rusty.
