The Lowdown
Alright, talkin' surf now. This is Rusty, and we’re looking at the next two weeks for the North Shore. Water temp is sitting at 80°F, which is pretty much right where it should be for July.
The first few days are a bit of a slow cooker. Sunday the 19th through Monday the 20th gives us small, clean lines from the east. We’re talking about 3 to 4 feet, with a light cross-off breeze keeping the surface smooth. The energy is moderate (364), and with a short 8-second period, these are friendly, crumbly waves. Good for a beginner to get wet.
Then the real stuff starts. Tuesday the 21st, the swell turns south, and the period jumps to 15 seconds. The wave height drops to about 2 feet, but the energy is up to 395. That’s a proper groundswell with some grunt. The standout is Wednesday, July 22nd. The swell is tiny at 2 feet, but the period is a massive 24 seconds. The combined energy hits 703. That’s a classic Waimea Rivermouth setup. The wind is a gentle cross-off, so the sets will be glassy. This is the best quality wave of the first week. Thursday the 23rd keeps that 20-second period going, with energy climbing to 891.
Friday the 24th throws a curveball. The swell swings back east, but the period drops to 7 seconds, and the height jumps to 6 to 6 feet. That’s a lot of short-period, lumpy white water. It’s rideable, but it's not the good stuff.
The second week picks up again. Saturday the 25th brings back the long-period SSW groundswell, with energy hitting 1053. That’s strong. Sunday the 26th through Monday the 27th holds steady with clean 3 to 3 foot waves from the SSW, with periods of 15-16 seconds. The wind is light, turning glassy on Monday afternoon.
The big highlight of the whole 16 days is Tuesday, July 28th. The morning shows a 6-foot east swell with a 13-second period, but the combined energy is a massive 1216. The wind is light and glassy. This is a standout, but a 6-foot east swell at the river mouth can break straight and fast, making it a challenge for experts only. It drops off to weak, ordinary conditions right after that.
The final days into August are small and weak, with glassy conditions but no real energy.
So, for the best on offer: Wednesday, July 22nd is the pick for quality, long-period groundswell. And Tuesday, July 28th is the big, powerful one, but it’s for the experienced guys only. The rest is small, clean, and fun for the beginners.
This is Rusty, out.
