Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hideaways over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Hideaways has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, we’re looking at a long stretch where the surf is just not coming together. The first proper recommendation isn’t until July 14th. That’s a pretty big gap, so don’t hold your breath until then. The early days are plagued by moderate east winds and short-period swell that’s delivering waves around 5 ft to 7 ft, but the energy is all over the place and the quality just isn’t there. For an exposed reef spot like Hideaways, that ENE direction isn’t doing it any favours either.
The first standout comes on Tuesday morning, July 14th. Now, this is a real shift. The swell drops right down to 2 ft, but look at that period – 16 seconds from the west. That’s proper groundswell energy, packing a punch with moderate energy (517). It’ll be clean with a gentle east breeze, and the water temperature is sitting at a normal 79° for this time of year. This is the kind of long-period west swell that Hideaways was built for – a reef break that loves that direction. It won’t be massive, but the shape and the grunt will be there. Just be aware that the crowds are often here, so you won’t have it to yourself.
That west swell holds through the 15th and 16th, with similar 3 ft, 15-second pulses and consistent clean conditions. The energy stays strong, comfortably in the 400–500 range. It’s the best run of the outlook, but it’s not big – ideal for those who love a long, drawn-out line.
Then we get a dip in quality again from the 17th onward. The swell swings back to the ENE, period drops to 7 seconds, and the heights are mostly around 3 ft to 5 ft. The east wind stays on it, keeping it cross-off and clean, but the energy drops right off and the wave quality goes marginal. Not really worth paddling out for.
There is one more flicker of hope right at the end. On Tuesday, July 21st, we see a big jump in energy with a very long-period 20-second swell from the east at 3 ft, pushing moderate-to-strong energy (977). The afternoon picks up to 3 ft and 19 seconds, with energy hitting 1038. That’s a serious amount of grunt for small waves. If there’s a second standout, this is it. It’ll be clean with a light east breeze, but that very long period can make things close out at a beach break – at a reef like Hideaways though, it might just be magic. This is promising but remember, it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best bet is the west swell window mid-week on the 14th. It’s not a one-wave wonder, but for a reef that loves a long period and a clean sky, that’s your pick of the fortnight.
Rusty.
