The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's take a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we've got a bit of a slow start, but there's a decent window of fun, clean surf coming up. The water temperature is sitting at a very comfortable 80.1°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year.
The first real standout is Saturday, the 22nd of August, at Polihale. We've got a clean, glassy morning with a 3.0ft WNW groundswell rolling in with a 12-second period. The energy is moderate at 228, and the wind is a light 3 mph from the ESE, making it glassy. The afternoon cleans up even more with a dead calm 0 mph wind, still glassy, and the swell holding at 2.6ft from the WNW. The energy jumps up to 310, which is a solid moderate pulse. This is the pick of the first week – clean, lined-up waves with that nice WNW direction. Just a heads up, Polihale can get a few people around sometimes, but mid-week it shouldn't be too bad.
The rest of the first week, from Sunday the 23rd through to Wednesday the 26th, drops off a bit. The swell hangs around 1.6ft to 3.0ft, and while the winds are mostly cross-offshore and clean, the energy is low and the waves are pretty ordinary. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are a write-off with hardly any swell at all.
There's a bit of a flat spell from the 27th of August right through to the 30th, with no real surf to speak of.
Then, on Sunday the 30th of August, we get a pulse of 4.3ft NE windswell, but it's a short 7-second period and the wind is cross-shore. The energy is moderate at 140, but it's not going to be pretty. The conditions are poor, so I'd give it a miss.
The next promising window opens up on Thursday, September the 3rd. The afternoon glass-off looks good with a 2.3ft W groundswell and a long 14-second period. The energy is strong at 266, and with a 3 mph easterly glassy wind, it's going to be clean. The morning of the 3rd has a bit of cross-shore wind, but the afternoon is the go.
The real long-range standout is Friday, September the 4th. We have a consistent 2.6ft W groundswell with a 14-second period, and the energy is solid at 329. The wind is a light 6 mph from the south, blowing cross-offshore, so the waves will be clean and well-shaped. This is a promising one, but it's a fair way out, so keep your fingers crossed.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 28°C on Sat morning, min 25°C on Thu morning). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummaryLight rain (total 2mm), mostly falling on Tue afternoon. Warm (max 28°C on Sun afternoon, min 25°C on Sun night).
