The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s going on for this stretch of coast.
The good news is, there is surf on the way, but it’s gonna be a bit of a patient game. We’ve got a small, clean combo swell rolling in for the first few days, but the real standout is going to be that Monday, July 27th push. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. There’s a big gap in the middle of the outlook, though, with next to nothing happening from the 23rd through the 26th, so be ready for a flat spell right in the middle of the month.
Let’s start with the here and now. Polihale (sandbar) is where it’s at. This Thursday afternoon, July 16th, we’ve got a glassy 3 ft wave coming from the west, with a lovely long period of 14 seconds. The water is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, and the combined energy is moderate (359). It’s a small, clean wave, ideal for a longboard or a funboard. The wind is dead calm, so expect mirror-like conditions. Great for a sunset session.
Moving into Friday, July 17th, the morning holds similar form. Still a glassy 2 ft wave from the west (271 energy), with a touch of breeze from the ENE. It’s clean and glassy. The afternoon stays clean but the wind swings a little cross-off, so still very surfable but just a touch less perfect.
Saturday, July 18th, offers a small, glassy 2 ft wave from the west in the morning, but the period drops to 7 seconds, so it’s gonna be a bit weak and disorganised. The afternoon picks up a little energy (121) but it’s still small. Nothing to get excited about.
Sunday, July 19th, is a write-off in the morning with a weak, short-period 2 ft NNE swell. The afternoon sees a slight bump in energy (103) but still very ordinary. Crowds are noted as *sometimes* here, but with this lack of quality, you probably won’t have to worry about it.
Monday, July 20th, is flat. Forget it. 1.0 ft and no energy. Tuesday, July 21st, sees a slight uptick with a 3 ft, but it’s a short-period 7-second NE swell. It’s rideable but nothing special. Wednesday, July 22nd, is back to small and weak.
Now, here’s the big gap. From Thursday, July 23rd, all the way through Sunday, July 26th, the forecast shows zero surf. Total flatness. It’s a blank run. Don’t bother checking the beach.
The Standout: Monday, July 27th morning.
This is the one. A clean 5 ft swell from the NE, with a period of 9 seconds, and combined energy of 370. The wind is glassy from the NE at just 3 mph. This is going to be a proper, punchy wave. It’s a bit of a step up in size, so it’s more for the intermediate to advanced crew. Catching it early will be key because the afternoon looks like it’s going to drop off and get messy. This is definitely the best session in the entire 16-day window.
After that, Tuesday, July 28th, drops back to 4 ft from the NE, still with some energy (133), but it’s ordinary. The rest of the week fades out to small, short-period mush.
And then, as a little bonus for the very end of the month, we’ve got a solid-looking morning on Friday, July 31st. A 3 ft NE groundswell with a 10-second period and 221 energy, glassy conditions. That’s a nice, clean, long-period wave to wrap things up. It’s a promise, but it’s a week and a half out, so keep your fingers crossed.
So, the plan? If you can, wait for Monday, July 27th morning. That’s the pick of the crop. The rest is a waiting game with a few glassy little waves in between.
Rusty.
