The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Polihale.
The first few days are actually looking pretty sweet. We’ve got a little window of clean, glassy surf kicking off on Thursday the 16th of July. Nothing huge, but a steady 3ft west swell rolling in with a solid 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the water temp is sitting about average for the time of year. The combined swell energy is solid at 422, so there’s some real push behind it. With the wind dead calm and glassy, this is your go-to. The waves will be clean and lined up, perfect for a long session.
That quality holds through Friday morning too, though the swell drops a touch to 2ft. Still that lovely long-period west swell, and the wind is light and cross-offshore. It’s surfable and clean, but the energy is easing. By Friday afternoon, it’s back to glassy conditions.
Now, here’s the kicker. From Saturday the 18th, things go flat real quick. The swell direction swings around, the period drops, and we’re looking at weak, poor conditions for days. There’s a long stretch here – basically from Saturday all the way through to the end of the month – where there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. The energy levels are mostly in the weak range, under 100, and a lot of days have zero swell.
There is a little blip on Tuesday the 28th of July with a 5ft northeast swell showing up, but the period is short at 8 seconds and the wind is cross-shore. It’s messy, not the kind of quality you want to chase. On Thursday the 30th, though, we get a proper spike: 5ft from the northeast, 10-second period, and clean, glassy conditions. Combined energy jumps to 447, which is moderate-to-strong. That’s the standout of the second week. The swell direction is northeast, but the optimum for Polihale is from the northwest, so it’s not a perfect match – still, the wind and the energy make it worth a look for the handful of sets that wrap in.
Overall, the first couple of days are the clear winners. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are your best bets. After that, it’s a long wait until the 30th, and even then, it’s not the ideal swell direction. Keep your expectations in check for that one.
Rusty.
