The Lowdown
Right folks, let’s talk about what we’ve got on the cards for Polihale. Look, I won’t beat around the bush—this forecast is a bit of a slow burner. We’ve got a long stretch of small, unexciting surf coming up, but the tail end of the window has a solid pulse that’s worth keeping an eye on.
The next week and a half is pretty grim. Starting from Saturday the 18th of July, we’re looking at tiny waves, mostly around 1ft to 3ft, and the energy is weak with the combined swell readings sitting between 24 and 123—just not enough grunt. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, but there’s a tease on Saturday afternoon with glassy conditions, though the waves are still tiny. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no worries there. This poor run carries on right through until around the 25th, with a lot of days showing zero swell and “poor surf conditions.” It’s a proper gap in action.
Now, things start looking up on Sunday the 26th of July. That’s our standout. The swell bumps up to a clean 6ft coming from the NE with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy hits 371 (moderate), and the wind is a light cross-off from the ENE. That’s going to produce clean, surfable waves. It’s a solid size for strong intermediates upwards, but at 6ft it’s getting a bit much for total beginners. The NE swell is what this break is after, so it should line up nicely on the sandbar.
The action holds through Monday the 27th with similar conditions—5ft to 5ft NE swell, still clean with light winds and energy around 284 to 229. This is the best run of the whole outlook. The crowd factor at Polihale can be “sometimes” busy, so expect company if it’s pumping.
It fades off after that. Tuesday the 28th drops to 4ft and the energy falls, and by Wednesday the 29th we’re back to small junk. There is a brief flicker on Saturday the 1st of August with some long-period 16-second WSW groundswell, but it’s only 2ft to 2ft. The period is long, so it’ll have shape but little push, better on a point or reef than a beach setup.
So, bottom line: if you’ve got patience, pencil in Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th of July for the best chance of a proper session. The rest is mostly a waiting game.
