The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Polihale in feet and miles per hour.
The water’s sitting at 79°, which is pretty average for the season, so nothing weird there.
We kick off this afternoon, Tuesday the 14th, with a clean 3ft west swell, long 16-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and with a light easterly cross-off breeze at 10 mph, it’s going to be smooth. The combined energy is a solid 557, so there’s plenty of push. This is a real standout session.
Wednesday the 15th is the pick of the bunch. Glassy, zero wind in the morning, with a 3ft west swell at 15 seconds. Energy is still strong at 408. The morning will be absolute perfection. The afternoon stays clean with a light offshore. If you’re only going to paddle out once, make it Wednesday morning.
Thursday the 16th keeps churning with 3ft west swell, period dropping to 14 seconds, but the cross-off wind keeps it tidy. Energy is moderate at 338. Friday the 17th is similar, with 2ft west swell, glassy periods in the afternoon, and light airs. It’s all good.
Saturday the 18th is where the wheels fall off. Swell drops to 2ft, energy plummets to 129, and the wind goes cross-shore. From Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 22nd, we’re essentially flat. There’s a 4-5 day gap with next to no swell and weak energy readings. Not worth wetting a wetsuit.
There’s a little bump on Wednesday the 22nd, but it’s poor. The next real chance comes on Monday the 28th of July. That morning we get a 5ft NE swell, 8-second period, with a light cross-off breeze. Energy hits 235, so it’s moderate. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and won’t have the same quality as the earlier west swell, but it’s the best looking day in that second week. The afternoon goes messy, so it’s a morning-only deal.
The absolute standout is Wednesday morning the 15th—dead calm, glassy, long-period west swell. Tuesday afternoon the 14th is also a gem. Get on it.
Rusty.
