The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next stretch.
Looks like the surf is going to be a bit of a slow starter, with nothing really worth paddling out for until the middle of the coming week. The real standout is shaping up to be a classic, small but clean window, and there’s a longer-range prospect that’s got some potential.
First up, Polihale. This sandbar setup is fairly consistent but it’s going to be a waiting game. The first action worth mentioning kicks off on Wednesday, 15 July morning. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The swell is a modest 3ft from the west, with a long 15-second period. That’s a nice groundswell, and combined with glassy conditions (ESE 5 km/h), it’s going to be clean. The combined wave energy is moderate at 426. This is a good session for a patient surfer who doesn’t mind a bit of a wait between sets.
The morning of Thursday, 16 July is also tidy. The same 3ft west swell, 14-second period, with offshore ESE wind at 5 km/h. Combined energy is 338. This is your best bet for a clean, uncrowded wave. It’s not big, but it’ll be fun.
The Friday, 17 July morning holds similar 2ft west swell, 14-second period, and cross-offshore winds (E 10 km/h). Energy is down to 226, but it’s still surfable.
After that, the swell drops right off. From Saturday, 18 July through to the middle of the next week, you’re looking at tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. There’s a long gap of several days where the forecast is just not worth a trip. The combined energy drops to double and even single digits, with some days showing zero. It’s a real lull.
Now, for the longer-range look. Keep an eye on Monday, 27 July morning. The swell builds back to 4ft from the NE, with a short 7-second period. The combined energy jumps to 189, and conditions are glassy (E 5 km/h). It’s a bit of a mixed bag – the short period means it won’t be as juicy as a groundswell, but the glassy wind will make it clean. This is a promising one, but it’s a week and a half away, so treat it as a hopeful prospect.
Then, Tuesday, 28 July morning looks even better. Swell is 5ft from the NE, 8-second period, combined energy of 229, and glassy winds from the north at 5 km/h. This is the biggest swell of the forecast, and with clean conditions, it could be the pick of the bunch for the later period. It’s a little short-period, but for a sandbar, it should still offer some fun lines.
Overall, the best surf on offer is Wednesday and Thursday mornings (15th and 16th July) for the cleanest, most consistent waves. The later swell on the 28th is a bigger, but less certain, option. There’s not much for beginners here – the bigger swells are only 5ft, so it’s still manageable for intermediates, but the 3ft days are perfect for a longboard.
Keep your eyes on the forecast, but for now, the middle of the first week is your window.
