The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what Polihale has in store for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you—it’s mostly a quiet period, so don’t plan your life around it.
We start on Saturday, July 18th, with tiny waves and a bit of cross-off breeze. The morning has a weak 2ft swell from the west with a 13-second period, but the combined energy is only 87, so it’s barely got any punch. The water is 80°, which is about average for this time of year. It’s surfable but very ordinary, and the afternoon is worse with a messy 2ft from the north-northeast. Not worth the effort.
Through Sunday and Monday, conditions are a mix of cross and glassy, but the swell stays tiny—mostly under 2ft. The combined energy never breaks 100, and the wave comments say it’s poor. Tuesday afternoon sees a slight bump to 3ft from the northeast, but with a short 7-second period and energy at 77, it’s still weak and mushy. Nothing to get excited about.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Wednesday, July 22nd, through Friday, July 25th morning, there’s no swell at all. Combined energy is zero. That’s a solid three and a half days of flatness. The wind is light and cross-off, but with no waves, it doesn’t matter.
The first flicker comes on Saturday, July 25th afternoon, when a 4ft northeast swell shows up with an 8-second period and 140 energy. It’s still just “surfable but very ordinary,” so don’t get your hopes up.
Now, here’s the one to watch. Sunday, July 26th morning is the standout. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the northeast, period of 8 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 329—that’s moderate wave energy and actually feels like real surf. The wind is light and cross-off from the east, so it’ll be clean. For Polihale, a sandbar setup exposed to the northwest, this northeast swell isn’t ideal, but the size and energy make it the best on offer. It’s still OK for intermediates since it’s just over 5ft, but it’s a solid option. Expect some company since it’s “sometimes” crowded.
After that, it fades again. Monday, July 27th afternoon has a 5ft northeast swell with 248 energy and glassy conditions—clean, but not as punchy. Tuesday, July 28th drops back to 4ft and weak energy. By Wednesday, July 29th, it’s back to tiny or flat with onshore winds.
The final days of July and into August show a few more pulses, but nothing special. July 31st morning has a glassy 3ft from the north-northeast, but with just 76 energy, it’s small. August 2nd afternoon brings a 2ft west-northwest swell with a very long 18-second period and 485 energy—that’s a moderate energy groundswell, but it’s long-period and cross-shore wind, so it’s marginal and probably better suited to a reef. Not a standout.
So, the only real standout is Sunday, July 26th morning. If you’re looking to paddle out, that’s your best bet. Everything else is flat or forgettable. Surf’s been quiet, but that’s normal for the area. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
