The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here. We’re lookin’ at a long, dry spell to kick things off. Don’t even think about draggin’ your board down until the 22nd of August. That’s a solid five days of flat, lifeless water.
Polihale (sandbar) – The water’s warm, right around normal for this time of year, 81°F. No surprises there. The first real chance comes on Saturday, the 22nd of August. The morning is glassy, flat calm wind, with a 3ft swell from the WNW. The energy is weak though, at 183. The afternoon is where it’s at. The same WNW swell picks up to 3ft, the period is a solid 11 seconds, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the east. The combined energy jumps to 387. It’s clean, it’s rideable, but you gotta be patient. It’s not a day to call in sick for, but it’s a window.
Sunday the 23rd is similar, but the energy drops off through the day. Monday the 24th is back to the slow lane. The 25th and 26th are a total loss with a risk of thunderstorms.
Now for the one real highlight. Mark your calendar for the 31st of August – Monday morning. The wind is a light cross-off from the ENE at 6 mph, and the swell is a solid 4ft from the NE. The period is a short 8 seconds, more of a windswell, but the energy is punchin’ in at 364. This is the biggest, most energetic swell of the whole forecast. The waves will be there, and the conditions are “good surf conditions.” The afternoon is okay, but the morning is the session to be on.
The first few days of September are a dud. A long-period groundswell from the WNW (14 seconds) shows up on the 1st, but it’s only 2ft and the energy is drainin’ fast. It’ll be gutless.
So here’s the plan: the 22nd of August gets you clean, small waves, but the 31st of August is the main event. It’s the biggest push, and the wind is right. After that, it’s back to the waitin’ game.
Rusty.
