The Lowdown

Alright, I tell you what, looking out over the next couple of weeks, it's a bit of a slow roll for Kapukahehu. We got a bit of energy right now, but it’s messy with the wind. The best bet is going to be waiting it out for a good window.

Starting off from now, Saturday the 25th, we got some waist-high swell coming in around 3 ft from the SSW with a very long 19-second period. That’s that deep ocean groundswell. But that easterly wind is pumping at 22 mph, gusty cross-off. It’s making it hard to enjoy. The water temp is sitting at a nice 80°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there. (Moderate wave energy at 786).

Sunday and Monday, the swell drops a touch, still around 3 ft to 3 ft, but that wind stays fresh from the ENE, just chopping things up. Nothing really worth paddling out for in those conditions.

We hit a bit of a flat spell from Tuesday through to the middle of the following week. The swell sinks to barely 1 ft to 2 ft. The energy just drains away. For a few days there, it’s a real lull. If you’re desperate, Wednesday morning the 29th might give you a tiny thigh-high wave, but it’s weak and the conditions are just ordinary. No standouts in there.

Now, here’s the little glimmer. Thursday morning, the 30th, we see a slight bump. Swell at 3 ft from the S, period 14 seconds, and the wind drops to a gentle 9 mph from the ENE. That’s the best it’s gonna look for a while. It’ll be clean, but still small. After that, the wind cranks right back up.

The whole first week of August looks pretty grim. It’s small, it’s windy, and there’s just no push. The energy readings drop into double digits, like 90 on the 2nd, just weak.

Now, if you are patient, there is some promise at the very end. On the 9th of August, a Sunday, we got something brewing. A nice 2 ft swell from the SSW with a very long 17-second period, and the wind goes glassy in the morning with a light easterly. (Moderate energy at 314). That is our standout. It’s clean, it’s a reef break that likes that SW direction, and with that period, it should line up nicely. But it’s a long ways out, so keep a loose eye on it. The afternoon of the 8th also looks pretty good with a light offshore.

So, in a nutshell: the next week is mostly a write-off unless you’re a kiter with the cross-shore winds. The real hope is that glassy Sunday morning on the 9th. That’s the one to circle.
