The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight. The outlook for ADs/Doubles over the next 16 days is a real struggle. It’s a long stretch of strong, messy cross-shore winds that are going to chop up whatever swell is there. The water temp is sitting at 80°F, which is dead average for this time of year, so that’s not the issue.
The whole first week, from Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of August, is a write-off. You’re looking at swell heights between 5 ft and 6 ft, but it’s all coming from the ENE with a short, weak period of 6 to 7 seconds. The wind is a solid 22 to 25 mph, always cross or cross-onshore. The energy is moderate, but it’s all messy. The reports say “poor surf conditions” and “strong cross-shore” – don’t bother paddling out. It’s going to be a lumpy, windblown mess.
There is a glimmer – and I mean a faint one – late on Wednesday the 26th. The afternoon shows a tiny 2 ft swell from the south, but with a very long period of 18 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy. But the wind is still a fresh cross-shore 19 mph, so it’s not clean. The next day, Thursday the 27th, the morning shows a slightly better 4 ft south swell with a 17-second period, and the energy jumps to strong. But again, the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-shore. It’s a tease, rated marginal at best.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th, it’s back to the same ENE windswell mess with strong breezes. Nothing to recommend.
The best window in this whole 16-day span looks like it’s going to be around the 1st and 2nd of September. The swell bumps up to 7 ft to 8 ft from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is strong. The wind drops to a moderate 12-16 mph, still cross-shore, but it’s a cleaner cross-chop. The ratings are still only marginal, but for this spot, that’s as good as it gets in this forecast. It’s still a bit fat and cross, but there’s some power.
Then on Thursday the 3rd of September, the wind finally goes light and onshore from the ESE at 6 mph, with a 7 ft ENE swell. The period is 8 seconds, energy is strong. It’s rated the best score in the whole outlook. This is the standout, but it’s a long way off – over a week away. The light wind will make it cleaner than anything else, but it’s still a bit of a beast at 7 ft to 8 ft, so it’s for the experienced crew.
After that, it’s back to gale-force cross-shore winds and messy conditions right through to the 6th of September. The 6th is a write-off with a risk of thunderstorms and severe gale winds.
So, the honest truth? There’s no classic day here. The best bet is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. The light wind and solid swell make it the only one worth a look, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it. The rest of the time, the wind is going to ruin it. This stretch is mostly for the kite surfers with that strong side wind.
