The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s run through what’s happening at ADs/Doubles. Honestly, the first week and a half is a total bust. There’s a big gap of poor, messy conditions right from the start until late July. The wind is stuck cross-shore or cross-onshore from the ENE and NE, blowing 15 to 22 mph, keeping the surface lumpy and chopped up. The swell hangs around waist to chest-high but with a short period – 7 to 8 seconds – so it’s weak and junky. A few days have some long-period SSW groundswell, but those are tiny – 2 ft to 3 ft – and get torn apart by the wind. For 9 days or so, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. Even on the 22nd, when we see a "marginal" call, the wind’s still cross-shore and the swell’s only 5 ft from the ENE with a short 7-second period. Not clean, not inviting.
It’s not until Monday the 27th that we get a glimmer. Swell swings around to the east with a 15-second period – that's real groundswell – and the combined energy hits 971 (moderate), building to 1018 (strong) by afternoon. Winds finally drop to a moderate 12 mph cross-shore from the NE. The swell’s only 4 ft to 4 ft, but with that long period, the waves should have some decent shape and power. This spot runs best on an ESE swell, and we’re getting east, so it’s a fair match. Crowds are often around, so don’t expect to surf alone. Water temp is 79°F, about normal for the season.
The real standout is Tuesday the 28th. The morning brings a solid 7 ft swell from the ENE with a 13-second period and energy of 1684 (strong). That’s the biggest and most powerful day of the whole outlook. Winds are still cross-shore from the ENE at 15 mph, moderate breeze, so not perfectly glassy, but at that size the reef will be pumping. This is strictly for experts – 7 ft is well over 8 ft, so only the skilled need apply. Crowds are likely, so be ready for a packed lineup. The afternoon keeps similar size at 7 ft with 12-second period and energy of 1544, still serious waves. That Tuesday is easily the best day on offer, even if the wind isn’t pure offshore. Everything before that is a long, flat, blown-out wait.
Rusty.
