The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough run ahead. ADs/Doubles is going to see a lot of messy, wind-affected conditions. The water’s sitting at about 80°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so that’s one thing that’s not working against us.
We kick off with Sunday, July 19th. Swell is a weak 5 ft from the ENE, with a short, weak period of just 8 seconds. The wind is hammering out of the ENE at 22 mph, making for lumpy, cross-chop. This is poor. Monday the 20th drops in size but gets a long-period S swell at 16 seconds, though the cross-wind is still ruining any chance of a clean wave. The energy is moderate (592).
Through the middle of the week, things don't let up. Wednesday the 22nd has a tiny 2 ft S swell but with a very long period of 24 seconds. That’s a lot of energy (823) but it’ll be breaking straight on a beach setup, and the cross-wind will make it a frustrating mess. Not our kind of surf.
Then from Thursday the 23rd through Saturday the 25th, the swell jumps up but gets ugly. We see 7 ft to 8 ft from the ENE with a short period (7-8 seconds). The wind is strong cross-shore at 22-25 mph. The combined energy is rocketing up into the thousands (strong to very strong), but the surface will be a total washout. Unless you’re on a kite, this is a no-go.
Now, there’s a flicker of hope at the very end of the first week and into the second. Sunday, July 26th, the swell drops to 5 ft but swings east with a very long period of 16 seconds. The energy is huge (1882), but it’s still cross-shore. It’s only marginal, but the quality is a touch better than what came before.
The best chance of getting something decent comes on Tuesday, July 28th. The swell is a solid 6 ft from the east with a period of 13 seconds (groundswell). The wind backs off to 16 mph from the NE, turning cross-offshore. The commentary even calls it “clean.” This is the standout of the whole outlook. The energy is still very strong (1318), and the cleaner conditions should make for some fun lines at ADs/Doubles. Crowds are possible here.
After that, we drift back into weaker, wind-affected surf through to the end of the period. The last two days of July and into August see smaller east swells, but the wind stays on it, chopping things up. There's a brief moment on Thursday, July 30th, with light breezes and a tiny 3 ft swell, but it’s cross-shore and weak. Not worth getting excited about.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly a write-off. Your one true shot at something half-decent is Tuesday, July 28th. Lock it in if you can. Everything else is a salvage job.
Rusty.
