Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with ya – the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one for ADs/Doubles. We’ve got a long, frustrating stretch ahead with nothing but cross-shore winds mucking things up. The entire run from now through to Monday the 20th of July is a write-off, with every single session marked as poor surf conditions. That’s a solid 16-day gap with no decent waves on offer, so don’t bother waxing up just yet.
Let’s break it down. Starting Sunday afternoon the 5th of July, we’ve got a 7ft swell thumping in from the ENE, but it’s paired with a fresh cross-shore breeze at 22 mph, making a lumpy cross-chop that’ll have you fighting the wind more than the wave. The combined energy is moderate at 899, but with a short period of 7 seconds, it’s all jumbled and weak. Water temp is sitting at 80°, about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. That ENE direction is the worst for this exposed spot – the optimum swell is from the ESE, so the swell is coming from the wrong angle.
Monday sees the wind pick up to a strong 25 mph, still cross, and the swell jumps to 7ft to 8ft on Monday afternoon – that’s getting into expert territory at 8ft, but with messy cross-chop, even the crew will be staying on the beach. Tuesday keeps the same wind hell with 8ft to 8ft ENE swell. Wednesday through Friday are all fresh to strong cross-shore winds, with swell hanging around 6ft to 7ft. The energy drops from 726 down to 294 by Tuesday the 14th, so it’s losing steam too.
The second week doesn’t get any better. Saturday the 11th has a risk of thunderstorms and 8ft swell, but the wind is still hammering at 25 mph. From Sunday the 12th right through to Monday the 20th, it’s the same story: cross-shore winds every single day, with swell sizes from 5ft to 7ft and periods all under 8 seconds. The ENE wind direction just won’t let up, and the combined energy stays weak to moderate, maxing out at 705 on Saturday the 18th afternoon.
Look, this area is fairly consistent, so a blank run like this is unusual, but the forecast is locked in – no standouts, no windows. If you’re still keen to get wet, this setup with the strong cross-shore chop and steady ENE swell is actually more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now. Hope it turns, but for now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
