The Lowdown
Righto folks, Rusty here. We’re looking at one main break for this stretch, ADs/Doubles. The pattern is grim for a long stretch, but there’s a flicker of something promising right at the very end.
For the next week or so, it’s pretty much a write-off. The first decent window I can see is Thursday afternoon, August 20th. The water’s sitting at about 80°F, which is bang on average for this time of year. That Thursday arvo shows a small 2ft swell from the SSW with a very long 17-second period, and a cross-off breeze cleaning it up a treat. The combined energy is low (344), so it’s not powerful, but the conditions will be tidy. That’s the standout for this first week or so.
After that, we’re looking at a serious dry spell. From Friday the 21st right through to Wednesday the 26th of August, the onshore wind is relentless and messy, with the swell getting bigger but completely blown out. Things get a little bigger on the 22nd with 5ft to 6ft from the ENE, but the ENE wind is ripping at 22 mph, making it a total mess. The energy climbs (257-327) but it’s useless for a paddle. Frankly, for most of that week, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The gap in good surf lasts for days. We see a tiny chance on the 26th afternoon with another long-period S swell, but still cross-shore breeze and marginal conditions.
Now, for the second week, there’s a glimmer. A big shift happens around September 1st. The morning of Tuesday, September 1st shows a whopping 10ft groundswell from the E with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is enormous (1821). The wind looks manageable with a cross-shore breeze. But here’s the thing – this is a lot of water. At over 8ft, this is strictly for experts only. Plus, with a long period swell like that coming from the east, it can break a bit straight at a beach break, so you’d want a reef or point to get the best line. The forecast is promising but at this range, it’s less certain. The following days up to the 3rd of September still show solid 7ft to 8ft swell, but the conditions look a bit messier again.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re desperate for a clean wave in the near term, that Thursday afternoon the 20th is your best shot. For the brave and the expert crew, keep an eye on September 1st for the real power, but don’t count your chickens.
Rusty.
