Alright, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been looking hard at what’s coming for ADs/Doubles. To be straight with you, it’s a rough outlook for the first half. We’re looking at a whole 16-day window, but from Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, all the way through to Sunday, July 19th, it’s just no good for paddle surfing. That’s an 11-day stretch where every session is rated as poor. The problem is a relentless cross-shore breeze out of the ENE, blowing 22 to 25 mph, just tearing the surface up into a lumpy, messy cross-chop. The water temp is about average for the time of year at 79°, so it’s at least comfortable.
Even though there’s swell, it’s useless. Wave heights run from 6 ft up to 8 ft, but with a short period of only 7 seconds and that strong cross-wind, it’s a total mess. The wave energy is moderate to strong, hitting values over 900 at times, but it doesn’t matter because of the wind. On July 18th (Saturday), the swell jumps to a solid 10 ft with energy over 1700, but it’s cross-onshore and messy. That kind of setup is more for a kite surfer than a surfer.
Now, the light at the end of the tunnel. On Tuesday, July 21st, things start to change. The afternoon looks promising. The wind drops to a moderate 16 mph from the NE, and the swell swings to the east with a very long 17-second period. The wave height drops to 3 ft, but that’s pure groundswell. The energy is still strong at 1266. For the best of the run, check Wednesday, July 22nd: a 4 ft east swell at 15 seconds, with a fresh 22 mph cross-shore wind. It won’t be glassy, but the wave shape will be miles better. The energy is strong at 1091. Remember, that’s over two weeks out, so it’s a promising but not a certain call.
The standout session? I’d say Tuesday afternoon, July 21st, for that long-period groundswell finally showing up. For the best shape, Wednesday the 22nd is your call, even with the cross-breeze. Crowds are often around here, so expect company.
It’s been a rough run, but it won’t stay this way forever.
