Table - best surf conditions forecast for ADs/Doubles over the next 16 days.
Right, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for ADs/Doubles.
To be honest, mate, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty rough. We’ve got a solid run of ENE swell hanging around, but the wind is just murdering it. From Tuesday 7 July right through, it’s a constant stream of fresh to strong cross-shore and cross-onshore ENE winds, blowing 18 to 25 mph. That’s creating messy cross-chop and lumpy conditions, and the wave quality is just poor. The swell is there – between 6 ft and 8 ft with moderate energy – but it’s all short-period, 7 to 8 seconds, and with that wind, it’s a washing machine. Not even worth paddling out for.
This is a beach-and-reef setup, but with that much wind and chop, frankly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
That stretch of poor conditions runs all the way through until the morning of Monday 20 July. There’s a gap of about two weeks with no real surf recommendation.
Then, finally, there’s a flicker of hope on Tuesday 21 July. The morning shows a 4 ft swell from the east, but the real story is the period jumps to 16 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy is strong. However, the wind is still a moderate cross-shore from the ENE at 15 mph, and the surf is still only rated as marginal. That long period swell at a beach break can break too straight, so it’s a bit of a caveat.
The real standout, though, is on Wednesday 22 July. The afternoon shows glassy conditions – a light SSE breeze at just 3 mph, and the water will be glassy. The swell is 4 ft from the east, with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is moderate. The wind is offshore for the break (the optimum is ESE, and the swell is from the east, which is close enough), and the wave quality is expected to be very good. This is the one day to pencil in. The water temperature is about 80°F, which is pretty normal for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
So, if you’ve got patience, Wednesday 22 July afternoon is the only true standout. The rest of the window is a write-off.
Rusty.
