The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about ADs/Doubles.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. Not much to get excited about. The swell’s small and onshore winds are making a mess of things. There’s a long stretch with nothing worth paddling out for, almost two full weeks of poor conditions. The water temperature is sitting around 79°, which is right where it should be for this time of year, so that’s one thing that feels normal.
Thursday July 16th and Friday July 17th – tiny, weak swell, around 2 ft to 3 ft, from the SSW or ENE, and cross winds from the ENE at 15 to 19 mph. The energy’s low (298 to 351) and the waves are messy. Not worth your time.
Saturday July 18th through Monday July 20th – the swell nudges up to around 5 ft, but the wind stays cross or cross-on from the ENE, 15 to 22 mph. The energy climbs into the 400s and 500s, but it’s still lumpy and chopped up. The period is short, around 6 to 8 seconds, so it’s weak and wonky. No good.
Tuesday July 21st to Friday July 24th – periods get longer, some 14 to 23 seconds, and the energy jumps into the 700 to 1100 range. But the swell height drops back to 2 ft to 3 ft, and the wind stays fresh and cross. Still poor surf conditions. There’s a moment on the morning of Thursday July 23rd where the energy spikes to 1165, but it’s cross-on and messy.
Saturday July 25th – more of the same: 3 ft to 3 ft of SSW swell, long periods up to 20 seconds, but the ENE wind is strong at 22 to 25 mph. Energy is high (1226 to 1404) but the surf is junk.
Now, Sunday July 26th and Monday July 27th – we finally see some size. 5 ft to 5 ft of E swell, period 16 to 17 seconds, and energy is massive, over 2200. But the wind is still cross from the NE at 15 to 22 mph. The forecast calls it “marginal” – it’s not flat, but it’s not clean. Only the most desperate might find something.
Then Tuesday July 28th hits. This is the standout, but it comes with a big caveat. Morning and afternoon, we’re looking at a solid 12 ft of ENE swell, period 13 to 14 seconds, energy over 4200. The wind is lighter, NE at 12 mph, cross. The forecast says the wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That’s expert territory only. If you’re not solid on a big board, stay out. The swell direction is ENE, which matches the optimum direction for ADs/Doubles, so the lines should be good, but that size is a beast.
Wednesday July 29th – even bigger: 13 ft from the NE, period 13 seconds, energy nearly 5000. Again, wind is lighter, but it’s cross-on and the break is getting hammered. Too big for most.
Thursday July 30th – the swell drops to 8 ft from the NNE, period 10 seconds, energy 1112. Still messy, still cross wind. Not great.
Friday July 31st – back to 6 ft of ENE short period, 8 seconds, energy around 500. Wind is cross-on again. Poor.
So to wrap it up: the only window that really has size and direction is Tuesday July 28th and Wednesday July 29th, but that’s massive, expert-only conditions. If you’re a charger, mark those dates. For everyone else, it’s a long wait. The last week of July into early August has some energy, but the winds don’t cooperate. Keep an eye on it – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
