The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on the cards for ADs/Doubles over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one. We're looking at a long run of poor surf conditions. The first week and a half, from Saturday the 18th right through to Wednesday the 29th of July, is basically a write-off. That’s the truth. Every session is coming in with that "poor surf conditions" tag, and the scores are bottoming out. We've got a constant fresh to strong cross-shore wind messing everything up, and the wave energy, while it fluctuates a bit (values between 463 and 2211), just can't overcome that brutal wind. You'll see some swell around—like that 7ft ENE on Saturday the 18th with a short 7-second period—but it's lumpy, cross-chop, and absolutely no good for a paddle.
There's a little tease around the 20th and 21st, when we get some long-period groundswell from the south at 3ft, but the period is a massive 16 seconds at a beach break setup. That kind of energy just breaks straight and isn't going to offer much shape, especially with the wind still cross. Don't get sucked in.
The real kicker comes later on. From Friday the 24th of July, the combined wave energy starts to climb significantly, hitting four and even five-digit figures like 1417 and 1968. There's some decent-sized swell—8ft ENE swell on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th with 17-second periods. That's a heap of energy. But the problem remains the same: that persistent cross-shore ENE wind. The surf quality is still tagged "marginal" at best, and the description is still lumpy cross-chop. For a spot like this, exposed as it is, that onshore wind just ruins the party. Honestly, with that much wind and messy swell, this setup looks way more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone on a paddle board.
Your best hope—and I use that word loosely—might be the very tail end. Around the 30th of July and into the 1st of August, the winds finally drop to a moderate breeze and the swell comes from the ENE at around 5ft. But the period drops right off, down to 6 or 7 seconds, and we're still dealing with a cross-shore or cross-on wind. It's still "poor surf conditions." There’s just no standout window here. ADs/Doubles is a fairly consistent spot, so this kind of blank run is a bit of a bummer, but when the wind locks in from the east for this long, there’s nothing you can do but wait for the pattern to shift.
So, bottom line: leave the board in the car for a while. There's no day I'd recommend paddling out over these next 16 days.
Stay patient, Rusty.
