The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's shaping up.
Honestly, mate, it's a bit of a slow burner. The first week and a half is looking pretty rough at ADs/Doubles. We've got a persistent cross-shore wind from the ENE, mostly in the fresh to strong breeze range, which is just chopping everything up. Swell is there, but it's mostly short-period, wind-driven stuff between 5ft and 8ft, and the energy is sitting in the moderate range. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
From Sunday, August 23rd, right through until the end of August, it's a write-off. The wave comment constantly says "poor surf conditions," and the scores are zeros. There's a hint of a long-period groundswell from the S on Wednesday, August 26th, with a 14-second period, but it's tiny at 2ft, and that cross-shore wind is still ruining any chance of a clean face. Thursday, August 27th morning sees a bit of a jump in energy, but it's still only a 4ft S swell with a 17-second period. That's a long period, which would be great for a point or reef, but with the cross-shore wind, it's just lumpy and messy. It gets a score of 1 out of 10, which is a "marginal" call at best.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn't arrive until Tuesday, September 1st. The wind finally swings around to a cross-offshore from the NNE, and it's only a moderate breeze at 12 mph. The swell is a solid 7ft to 7ft from the ENE, with a 9-second period, which will have some push. The energy is strong, and the description says "clean." This is the standout of the whole forecast period. The wave comment is still "marginal," but with a score of 3, it's the best we'll see. It's an intermediate-level wave, fairly consistent at ADs/Doubles, which is exposed to swell and best with an ESE direction. The ENE swell is a little off that optimum, but the clean conditions will make it work. Keep in mind, crowds are listed as "often" here, so expect some company.
Wednesday, September 2nd, is a step back with risk of thunderstorms and a cross-on wind, making it choppy again. That clean window looks like it only lasts the one day.
From September 3rd through the 7th, we're back into the same old pattern: cross-shore winds, lumpy chop, and poor conditions. The swell sticks around in the 6ft to 8ft range, but the wind is relentless. There's a brief moment on Monday, September 7th morning, with a light E cross-on wind and a 6ft NE swell with a 10-second period, giving moderate energy, but it's only "marginal" at best.
So, the bottom line: if you're looking to paddle out, circle Tuesday, September 1st on your calendar. That's your best bet. The rest of the run is largely a waiting game.
Rusty.
