Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this stretch is a tough one. We’ve got a solid run of days ahead, but the surf quality is just not playing ball. We’re looking at ADs/Doubles as the only show in town, and honestly, it’s a mess for the foreseeable future. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.
The issue is that from Monday, 6th July right through to Tuesday, 21st July, it’s a continuous run of poor conditions. We’re looking at a solid 16-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The dominant wind is a strong ENE breeze, blowing 18 to 25 mph, and it’s stuck in a cross or cross-on direction the whole time. That’s creating a lumpy, messy cross-chop that just won’t clean up.
Swell-wise, we’ve got some size on offer. From Monday the 6th through to about Saturday the 11th, there’s consistent 7ft to 8ft of swell from the ENE, with combined wave energy sitting in the moderate range (e.g., 937, 985, 974). The period is a short 7 to 8 seconds, so it’s messy windswell, not proper groundswell. This size is actually gettable for intermediate surfers, but the wind and chop ruin it. By the time we hit the second week, the swell drops off to 5ft and below, and we even see a brief pulse from the SSW with a 17-second period on the 16th, but that’s just a flash in the pan with still poor winds.
There are no standouts here. Nothing is clean, no offshore winds, no glassy mornings. The best we can say is that if you absolutely have to get wet, the mornings will be slightly less choppy than the afternoons, but it’s still lumpy. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We’ll have to wait and see if the forecast changes, because this blank run is pretty normal for the area when the trades set in.
Rusty.
