Table - best surf conditions forecast for Publics over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for Publics over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’m calling it how it is: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for this stretch. The first week and a half is a write-off with strong cross-off winds from the ENE and a messy, short-period swell that just won’t clean up. The sea is kicking up a moderate wave energy, but the quality is completely missing. For a beginner-friendly spot like Publics, this is a tough stretch. The water temp is sitting at about 79°, which is about average for the time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re getting skunked.
From Friday 10th July right through to the following weekend, we’ve got a gap of about 10 days where the surf is either poor or just marginal. The wind is a constant cross-off from the ENE, anywhere from 19 to 25 mph, which is ruining any chance of a clean face. The swell is nearly all short-period ENE windswell, around 5 ft to 7 ft, beating straight into the beach and reef setup. It’s a real mess. On Friday 17th July, we see a 7 ft ENE swell, but again, the wind is howling. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We finally get a glimmer of hope in the second week. On Thursday 24th July, the wind drops to a moderate breeze from the ENE at 12 mph, and the swell goes tiny. Then on Friday 25th July, we see a small 2 ft S swell arriving with a very long period of 17 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which is a promising sign, but it’s small. It’s a marginal forecast, but it’s the best we’ve got. The direction is coming from the south, which is way off the optimum for Publics (SSE), but with glassy conditions and a potential for a clean, small wave, it might be worth a paddle for the die-hards.
So, if you’re hanging out for a wave, the only real standout, and I use that term loosely, is the morning of Saturday 25th July. It’s the 25th, two weeks out, so keep an eye on the forecast. The S swell at 2 ft with a 17-second period will be slow and clean, but it’s a long-range call and not something to get excited about. For the rest of the time, save your energy.
Rusty.
