The Lowdown
Right, listen up. Rusty here. This is a tough one to call. We're looking at the 16-day window for Kohala Lighthouse, and I gotta be straight with you – the truth is, there are no good surf options on offer in this entire period. The whole outlook is a blank run of "poor surf conditions" with a couple of "marginal" days that don't make the cut. This is a solid 16-day gap with no recommendations, so don't be holding your breath.
The problem is the wind. For the entire forecast, from the 14th of July all the way through to the 29th, it's relentless cross-shore from the east-northeast, often a fresh breeze of 19 mph or more. It's not just the wind, it's the swell period. For the first two weeks, the period is stuck at 6 to 8 seconds – short-period, wind-affected slop. The combined swell energy is moderate, hitting three-digit values like 340 on the 14th, but it's all messy. The water temp is around 79°, which is about average for the time of year, but that doesn't mean a thing when the surf is this poor.
There is a tiny flicker of hope right at the end. On the 26th of July, Sunday morning, we see a 3 ft swell from the east with a long period of 14 seconds and a combined energy of 730 – that's a proper groundswell pulse. The wind is still cross-shore at 16 mph, but it's a "moderate breeze" which is a step up from the fresh stuff. Sunday afternoon even gets a score of 1 out of 10 as "marginal." The 27th has a similar 3 ft, 15-second swell, energy at 678. But it's still cross-shore, and the overall quality is poor. This is a long-range promise, worth keeping an eye on, but it's far from certain. The 29th of July also shows a 5 ft swell with an 11-second period and energy at 609, but again, cross-shore winds and a "marginal" call. For a reef break like Kohala Lighthouse, that long-period swell is a positive, but with the wind trash, it's just not worth paddling out for.
So, that's the story. A month of nothing. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now, with that consistent cross-shore wind. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
