Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kohala Lighthouse over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead for Kohala Lighthouse. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty average, so don't be expecting any magic.
We kick off on Wednesday, July 8th, and it's a rough start. Kohala Lighthouse (Hawaii) is getting a messy 6 ft of short-period ENE windswell at just 7 seconds, but the wind is howling out of the ENE at 22 mph, making it a lumpy, cross-shore mess. The water's sitting at a warm 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, but you won't be feeling it with the wind in your face. The combined energy is weak (310), and honestly, it's just poor surf conditions. That's the story right through to the morning of Monday, July 20th – every day brings the same deal: 5 ft to 8 ft of short-period, cross-shore chop from the ENE with winds between 16 and 25 mph. It's fresh cross-shore and lumpy, day after day. The combined energy creeps up into the moderate range (hitting 816 on the 20th), but the wind's just ruining it. For a reef break that's exposed and needs clean conditions, this is a write-off. The swell is too short and the wind is never your friend.
Now, there is a glimmer on Tuesday, July 21st. We get a proper long-period groundswell rolling in from the E with a period of 16-17 seconds, but the height is only 4 ft to 4 ft. The combined energy jumps to strong (1215 and 1187) – that's proper energy for a small wave. The wind is still a cross-shore 19 mph though, which will keep things lumpy. The forecast calls it marginal, and with that long period, it'll be breaking straight at this reef, so you need a craft that can handle a wall. It's a tease, but it's the only standout in the whole run. After that, it fades out on Wednesday and Thursday, July 22nd and 23rd, with the wind turning cross-onshore and the swell dropping back to 3 ft.
Honestly, mate, there's not a single day with clean, lined-up waves. It's a blank run for the most part. If you're a kiter, the 7 ft to 8 ft days with the cross-shore wind might look interesting, but for us paddle surfers, it's a waiting game. The long-period energy on the 21st is the only thing worth keeping an eye on, but it's a long shot with that wind.
Rusty.
