Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kohala Lighthouse over the next 16 days.
Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s not sugarcoat it: this stretch of coast is looking bleak for a decent surf during this run. For the next couple of weeks, the wind is the villain. It’s a long wait for anything that might look ridable.
Right now, and through to the morning of Monday the 14th of July, it's all slop. We’ve got a consistent swell out of the ENE, running 5ft to 7ft. But a constant cross-shore breeze at 19 to 22 mph is just tearing it to bits. It’s lumpy, messy, and just poor. Don’t even think about it at Kohala Lighthouse.
Then on the morning of Tuesday the 15th of July, the swell bottoms out to just 2ft, swinging to the west with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and on a reef, that kind of energy doesn't always link up properly, especially with that cross-shore wind. Still a no-go.
From the 16th through the 23rd, it’s the same sad song. The ENE swell stays between 4ft and 8ft, but the wind stays cross-shore or turns cross-onshore. The wave energy is moderate most days, reading between 338 and 727.
There is one day that tries to get a pulse. On the afternoon of Saturday the 18th of July, the swell jumps to 10ft from the ENE with a strong energy reading of 1099. But the wind is still a messy cross-shore at 22 mph. That size with that chop is just a washing machine. The following Sunday afternoon, the 19th, has similar size – 10ft (strong energy at 1036) – but again, that lumpy cross-shore wind. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s going to be a fight.
Bottom line: there isn’t a standout session in this whole outlook. When the swell gets some power, the wind just kills it. This spot needs that glassy N offshore to be at its best, and we aren't getting it. With the constant cross-shore breeze on a beach and reef setup, this honestly looks better for the kite surfers than for us paddle guys.
Hang tight. It won’t stay this way forever.
