Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get stuck in. If you’re looking for a wave right now at Halawa (Oahu), you’re out of luck. This reef/river setup is the only game in town according to the forecasts, and honestly, it’s a rough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a blank run that starts now and doesn’t offer a single decent recommendation for over a week. The wind is a constant problem – solid 18 to 22 mph cross-shore breezes from the east-northeast, just tearing the surface up and leaving it lumpy and chopped. That’s a fresh breeze day after day, with moderate energy behind the swell (combined energy in the 400-700 range) but the quality is shot. If you’re a kite surfer, this wind might get you going on a beach setup, but for a paddle surfer on a reef, it’s a no-go. Forget it until at least the 14th of July.
There’s a tiny flicker around the middle of July, from the 15th into the weekend of the 17th. Swell picks up again to around 6.9 to 8.2 ft from the east-northeast, but here’s the kicker – the period is short, at 7 to 8 seconds. That’s windswell, and those fresh cross-shore winds are still ruining the surface. The combined energy hits 714 to 819 (moderate to strong energy levels), but the “poor surf conditions” label tells the story. That’s too much bump to be fun.
Then, after all that, a real stand-out window appears on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of July. Swell direction swings around to the west-northwest, and the period stretches to 13 to 14 seconds – proper groundswell. But the size crashes to just 0.7 to 1.0 ft. Combined energy is a weak 16 to 36. Even if the wind stays cross-shore, those waves will barely show. It’s a tease, not a score.
Finally, on the 20th of July (Monday) , a new pulse of east-northeast swell arrives at 5.2 ft and 8 seconds. The wind backs to a moderate cross-shore breeze from the east, easing to 15 mph, which might tidy things up a little and drop the combined energy to 339-381. Still, the period is short, and the quality is consistently rated as poor for the entire run.
Best on offer? Honestly, you’re picking the least messy day. I’d say Monday 20th of July is your only real shot, purely because that moderate breeze from the east might be a little less bumpy than the fresh stuff we’ve had. But don't expect miracles. The break itself is fairly consistent for the area, but with these winds and short-period swell, it’s just not happening. There is nothing close to a standout here in the first week. Stick to the reef at Halawa, keep an eye on the 20th, and hope the forecasts shift. It won’t stay this grim forever.
