The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you. The next 16 days look bleak for Halawa. This is a reef and river setup that’s exposed to the swell, but we’re just not getting the goods. The whole outlook is a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with a real gap of nothing worth paddling out for running from now all the way through the end of the month. It’s a tough run.
The only hint of something happening is way out in the distance. On Monday the 31st of August, we start to see some size, with the swell climbing to 8 ft from the ENE. That’s solid, but it’s pushing into expert-only territory. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell, meaning it’ll be a bit lumpy. The combined wave energy is strong at 714 (strong), but the wind is a cross-shore breeze at 12 mph, so it’s not going to be clean. It’s a marginal call, and honestly, for a setup like this, that much size with cross-shore wind is going to be a messy, challenging session. The water temperature is 80°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re getting worked.
The rest of the period is a write-off. We’ve got tiny swells, cross-shore winds, and a lot of chop. On the 2nd of September, we get a glassy morning with a tiny 0.3 ft swell from the NW, but that’s a lake, not surf. There’s nothing here to get excited about.
So, if you’re desperate, keep an eye on that Monday the 31st of August, but don’t hold your breath. It’s a long, dry spell ahead.
Rusty.
