Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at this stretch, but I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough one. We’re looking at the Halawa area, and the next sixteen days are pretty much a write-off for decent surf.
Right from the start, we’ve got a long run of poor conditions. From Friday the 3rd of July right through to Saturday the 18th, it’s a solid block of no-go. The main issue is the wind. It’s hammering in from the ENE and E, sitting at a persistent 18 to 22 mph, which is a fresh breeze. That keeps the surface messy with a nasty cross-chop, and it’s not backing off. The swell from the ENE is short-period stuff, barely hitting 8 seconds, so there’s no real power or shape behind it. The combined wave energy is moderate, but honestly, it’s all noise – numbers like 368 to 534, but it’s not translating into anything rideable.
There is one tiny flicker of hope way out at the end. On the morning of Thursday the 16th of July, we see a spike of very long-period swell rolling in from the west-northwest, with a 14-second period. That's proper groundswell energy. But here’s the kicker – the swell height is only 2 ft. The combined energy on that is 281, which is still moderate but with that long period, it’ll be full and lined up. The trouble is that Halawa is a reef/river setup, and a long-period swell like that from the WNW is the opposite of its optimum direction from the NNW. It’s also inconsistent by nature. The wind is still a fresh cross-shore, so it won't be glassy. It’s a tease more than a recommendation. The rest of the second week follows the same pattern of small, junky windswell.
So, for this entire outlook, there are no standout sessions for a paddle surfer. The combo of strong cross-shore winds and weak, short-period swell keeps everything blown out and poor. This kind of blank run is normal for this spot when the trades are up.
Stay patient, or maybe it's a good week to check your gear. The forecasts can always shift, but right now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
