The Lowdown
Alright, let's talk about this in feet and miles per hour.
It's a grim outlook, folks. We're staring down a long stretch of junky surf with a cross-shore breeze that won't leave us alone. The first real chance of a wave you'd want to paddle for isn't until the last few days of the month. For a reef like Halawa, you need the wind to be your friend, and it's just been a total stranger.
The first few days are a total bust. Friday the 17th through the weekend, it's tiny and bumpy. The energy is weak, with the combined swell energy down around 136, even dropping to 34 by Saturday morning. Don't even bother.
We get a little bump on Sunday the 19th with a 5-foot swell from the ENE, but the period is short, only 8 seconds, and the wind is still cross-shore. The energy jumps to 373, but it's a messy, lumpy surface. That same story of moderate to fresh cross-shore wind keeps on going through the next week.
The first glimmer of hope shows up right at the end of the month. Tuesday the 28th of July into Wednesday the 29th, we've got a solid 8-foot swell from the ENE, but it's coming from a cross-onshore angle and the period is all over the place. It's still a choppy mess. The combined energy is massive, hitting 2564, but it's not clean. The wind is just too strong and in the wrong spot.
By Thursday the 30th of July, things start to look a little better. The wind finally drops to a moderate cross-shore, and we have a 7.5-foot swell from the ENE with a longer period of 12 seconds. The energy is still strong at 1496. It's not glassy, but it's the best we get. This is a big wave for a reef, so it's experts only. The water temperature is about average for the season.
The only real standout is Thursday the 30th of July. The swell is a solid 7.5 feet from the ENE, and the wind is cross-shore instead of cross-on, which is a massive upgrade. The longer period of 12 seconds will give it some punch, but at a reef, that long period can make it a bit sectiony. Still, it's the cleanest window we have. The crowds are *sometimes* a factor here, so you might have some company.
So yeah, there's a gap of almost two weeks of nothing but poor, unrideable surf before we get to that marginal window at the end of July. The rest is either too small, too windy, or both. It's a tough watch, but it looks like it might finally turn by the end of the month.
