The Lowdown
Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at a stretch that’s gonna test your patience. Honestly, the whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality surfing at Halawa. The ocean’s just not cooperating.
Right from the start, Monday 13 July, we’ve got some swell but it’s a messy one. The wind is a consistent cross-shore breeze, never letting the waves clean up. The water is sitting at 79°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. The swell is coming from the ENE, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (434). But it’s all for nothing with that wind state. The word "poor surf conditions" is on every single record, and I’m not here to argue with that.
The pattern just keeps going. Tuesday 14 July is more of the same: cross-shore winds, short period swell, and combined energy dropping a bit (330). We’re looking at a decent chunk of time where the swell size is small and the wind is just ruining any chance of a clean face.
Then, Wednesday 15 July through to Saturday 18 July, the swell drops right off to tiny 2 ft to 1 ft. The period gets long, up to 15 seconds on Wednesday, but the energy is weak (134 to 63). With a fresh cross-shore wind, it’s a total no-go. This is a solid gap of about four days with nothing to recommend.
Sunday 19 July brings a bit of a spike in the afternoon with 5 ft from the ENE, but the period is only 8 seconds, and the wind is still cross-shore. Combined energy jumps back to 373, but again, the conditions are poor. It’s a tease.
From Monday 20 July right through to Tuesday 28 July, it’s a long, drawn-out period of small to medium ENE swell, with periods mostly between 6 and 8 seconds. The wind is a constant cross-shore or cross-onshore breeze, and every single record calls it poor surf conditions. The combined energy sits in the moderate range (150 to 289), but it doesn’t matter when the wind is chewing it up.
The best I can say is that if you’re absolutely desperate for a paddle, the 5 ft to 6 ft days from 22 July onward might have a little bit of push, but the wave shape will be bumpy and weak. It’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing through this whole stretch.
There’s no standout. There’s no hidden gem. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not uncommon. The forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the boards in the car and go find something else to do.
Rusty.
