The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the table for the next couple of weeks in this part of the world.
Look, I gotta be straight with you – it's a pretty bleak run ahead. The whole 16-day window is a struggle. There's nothing that I'd call a good, classic surf day. Most of the time the wind is howling out of the east, creating a messy cross-chop that just wrecks any chance of a clean face. You'll be paddling your guts out for lousy, bumpy lines. For a stretch there from the 17th through the 23rd, we see small, weak swells with very poor conditions, making it a proper write-off for anyone looking for a wave. Then, the last week of August and into September, the swell drops right off and the wind stays strong. It's just flat and blown out.
Now, if you're desperate, there are a couple of days where the raw power is there, but the quality is still a major issue. On Monday the 24th, the swell pushes up. We get a pulse of 8ft from the ENE with a period of short, dumpy 7 seconds. The energy reading is a chunky 595 (moderate wave energy), but it's arriving with a strong 22 mph cross-shore wind. That's a recipe for a messy, lumpy, and pretty unpleasant session unless you're a masochist. The only real stand-out in terms of size is Wednesday the 26th afternoon, where a 8ft ENE swell rolls in with a powerful 726 (strong wave energy), but again, the same problem – 19 mph cross-shore winds. At 8ft, that's expert territory, and with that chop, it's going to be a battle, not a pleasure.
At the beginning of the run, on Monday the 17th, the water temperature is 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year. That’s one small comfort, but it’s about the only one.
Honestly, for 99% of surfers, this is a two-week skip. With the persistent strong winds and small-to-overpowered lumpy surf, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. So save your energy, take a break, and maybe the next forecast will have something better for us.
Rusty.
