Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – we’ve got a real dry spell on our hands for Halawa (reef/river). Looking at the whole 16-day window, there’s nothing that ticks the boxes for a decent paddle. The whole first week and a half is written off.
Things kick off Thursday afternoon July 2nd with a 5ft NE windswell, but the wind is a fresh 19 mi/h cross-shore from the ENE, and it’s directly opposed to the optimum NNW direction for this break. The water temp is sitting at 79°, about average for the time of year. The combined swell energy is only moderate at 320, and with a short 8-second period it’s just lumpy cross-chop – poor surf all the way. That same story repeats day after day: Friday July 3rd through to Monday July 13th you’re looking at 5ft to 7ft of mostly 7 to 8-second ENE windswell, with a fresh 19 to 22 mi/h cross-shore wind ruining any chance of clean faces. The energy climbs a bit (387 up to 536 in the middle there), but the quality is zero – it’s messy, no shape, no joy.
Late in the piece, from Tuesday July 14th, the swell direction shifts to the W and the period jumps to 14-16 seconds – that’s proper long-period groundswell. But the heights drop right off to just 2ft to 2ft, and the wind stays cross-shore from the E at 16 to 19 mi/h. Energy craters to 77 or 135 – weak stuff. It’s nearly flat for a point and reef setup like this.
Honestly, there is no standout here. A few days in the middle have swell around the 7ft mark, but with that short period and constant cross-wind it’s a total write-off. If you’re desperate for a splash, maybe the morning of July 7th has the biggest size (7ft), but the cross-chop makes it more of a battle than a session. For beginners, anything over 5ft with this wind is too rough anyway; experts wouldn’t touch it with that period and wind combo.
A blank run like this is pretty normal for Halawa when the trade winds are hammering from the ENE – the break is exposed but the direction is all wrong. It won’t stay poor forever, but for this 16-day stretch, leave the boards at home.
– Rusty
