Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's headed our way for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real chance of any surf won’t show up until around Tuesday, July 14th, and even then, it’s barely a whisper. For over a week before that, from July 3rd right through to July 13th, the conditions are just plain ugly. We’ve got a solid ENE breeze, 18 to 22 mph, blowing straight across the water, just mushing up any hope of a clean wave. The swell is coming in from the ENE too, short-period stuff around 7 to 8 seconds, and the energy readings (between 255 and 568) are moderate, but with that wind, it’s all lumpy, choppy, and hopeless.
Halawa is our only spot on the map here, a reef/river mouth setup that usually needs a solid NW swell to work its magic. But this wind and swell combo is just a mess. It’s a real shame because the water temp is a beautiful 79°F, right on par for this time of year.
So, here’s the only tiny window we get. On Tuesday, July 14th, things look slightly less grim. The wind drops a notch to a moderate 12–16 mph breeze from the E. The swell holds in at about 6 ft to 7 ft from the ENE, still short period at 7 seconds, but the energy is actually peaking at a strong 541–598. The call is for “marginal” conditions. It won’t be pretty, and the cross-shore breeze will still put a chop on it, but there might be a few lumpy, short lines to chase if you’re absolutely desperate. This height (over 5 ft) is getting a bit too much for beginners, but at that period it won't hold much power.
After that brief tease, it’s back to the same old story of onshore wind and crummy surf through to the end of the forecast on July 18th, with energy dropping right down (74 to 135) and swell sizes fading to under 3 ft.
Honestly, if you’re not married to the idea of surfing, this setup looks a lot more interesting for the kite surfers who can handle the lumpy cross-shore. For the rest of us, it’s a two-week blank. Hang in there, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
