The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a pretty grim stretch at Halawa for a while. There’s no real surf worth paddling out for until the very end of the period, and even then it’s not looking great.
The water at Halawa is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing wild there.
For the first week and a half, from Thursday 20th August right through to Tuesday 1st September, it’s a real write-off. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, often fresh and lumpy, and the swell is tiny – mostly under 3 ft, with periods all over the place but mostly short. The energy is weak, often well under 100 (36, 62, 27, 40 etc). The wave comment is “poor surf conditions” across the board, so there’s just nothing to get excited about. There’s a brief blip on Sunday 30th August where the swell picks up to 7-7 ft from ENE with a 13-second period, and the energy jumps to 1393-1528 (moderate-strong), but the wind is still fresh cross-onshore and lumpy. It’s too messy.
The only window that might be worth a look is around Tuesday 1st September. The swell builds to 12 ft from ENE, with a 10-second period, and the energy is a massive 2270 (strong-very strong). The wind is light cross-onshore (6 mph), so it’s not completely blown out. But with that size and a short period, it’s going to be wild and only for experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. The wave comment is “marginal” at best, so keep expectations low.
Bottom line: the first 11 days are a total bust. Then around Tuesday 1st September there’s a chance of some big, messy, and tricky conditions. If you’re an expert and don’t mind a bit of cross-onshore chop, that’s your best bet. Otherwise, I’d sit this one out.
