Alright, this is Rusty. Let's be straight with you – there isn't a single decent wave to be had at Halawa across this entire 16-day stretch. It’s a tough one, but sometimes that's just how it goes on these exposed reefs when the wind and swell don't play ball. We've got a blank run from start to finish with zero quality on offer.
Looking at Halawa (reef/river), the story starts with a moderate swell running, around 6 ft to 8 ft from the ENE through the first week. That sounds alright, but the problem is the wind. It's a relentless fresh breeze out of the same ENE direction, smashing straight across or onshore, so the combined swell energy (429 to 578) is just churning up lumpy, cross-chop. No clean face to be found, just messy, poor surf conditions. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is pretty average for this time of year, but you wouldn't want to be out there anyway.
That pattern holds all the way into the second week. The swell height drops a little, down to around 5 ft to 6 ft, and the wind eases slightly to a moderate breeze, but it's still crossshore and choppy. The energy (399 to 513) stays in that moderate range, but with a short period of only 7 seconds, it's weak, onshore windswell. Not worth paddling out for.
Then, around July 17th and 18th, the swell totally collapses. We're talking tiny 1 ft to 1 ft leftovers from the WNW with a very long period of 13 to 14 seconds. That would be beautiful groundswell at a point break, but at a reef exposed to ENE wind, with 15 to 22 mph cross-breeze? Forget it. The combined energy drops to a pathetic 31 to 101, and it's still marked as poor surf conditions. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, but for us wave hunters, it's a complete washout.
So there you have it, folks. No standouts, no hidden gem days. This is one of those blank runs that happens more than you'd like in this area. Forecasts can and do change, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
