The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you. It’s been flat, and it’s gonna stay flat for a while. Looking at the whole 16-day stretch for Halawa, I’ve got to be honest – there’s not a single day in this window that’s worth getting excited about. The finder is giving a big zero across the board, and the guidance backs that up. This is one of those blank runs that just happens. The surf just isn’t showing up, and with the wind we’ve got, we’re in for a pretty frustrating stretch.
Right now, we’re looking at weak, short-period swell out of the ENE. Tuesday morning (18 August) has a modest 4ft at 8 seconds, but the energy is weak (200) and the easterly cross-shore is chopping it all up. Water temp is 80°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. Don’t get your hopes up for the rest of this week – it’s the same story. Small waves, cross-shore wind, and a messy surface. Thursday and Friday have even less on offer, with the swell dropping below 3ft and period under 7 seconds. This is not surfing; it’s just floating.
The weekend gets worse. By Saturday (22 August), the swell direction swings to the west, but the size just falls off a cliff – we’re talking 1ft with a long period. That long period means the waves are just straight lines rolling through, and with the strong easterly breeze, it’s going to be lumpy and horrible. It’s the same through to the middle of next week. Nothing but small, weak west-northwest swell and a persistent cross-shore wind.
Now, there is one blip – Tuesday morning (25 August). The energy jumps up to a strong 595 with a 7ft swell from the ENE, but the period is still short at 8 seconds. But here’s the catch: it’s not going to be any good. The wind is still a fresh cross-shore, and that energy is going to be wasted on a lumpy, onshore mess. For a beach and reef setup like Halawa, this looks way more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing. So while there’s size, the quality is just poor. And right after that, it drops back to nothing.
The rest of the second week is a total desert. Swell heights stay under 3ft, and the period is long but useless. By the end of the month and into September, there’s barely a ripple, and the wind is still cross-shore. There is a chance of a few showers and even a thunderstorm around the 27th, but that won’t bring any surf. The whole second week is just a write-off.
So, there you have it. No standouts, no silver linings. This is a solid two-week-plus period of nothing. The good news is, it can’t stay this bad forever – forecasts change. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, find something else to do.
