Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. Got to be straight with you—this is a tough stretch. The finder is showing a big fat zero across all days, every session is marked as poor surf conditions, and the combined swell energy runs from moderate to weak, ranging from (584) down to as low as (15). That means the ocean is not cooperating for paddle surfing at all.
For the first week and a half, from Sunday July 5th right through to Wednesday July 15th, we’ve got a constant barrage of cross-shore wind, mostly from the ENE at 15 to 22 mph, with a fresh breeze or moderate breeze. That’s not just a minor annoyance—it’s lumpy cross-chop every day, wrecking any chance of a clean wave face. The swell is hanging around 5 ft to 8 ft but coming from the ENE at a short period of 6 to 8 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell. Short period, messy, bumpy. The only break in the frame is Halawa, a reef/river setup that’s fairly consistent but exposed to this onshore wind. Normally, on a NNW optimal swell direction, this spot would pump, but we’re getting the complete opposite - ENE swell straight into the wind. The water temperature anomaly is listed as “-”, meaning it’s about average for this time of year, no major shift.
There is a little shift around Thursday July 16th into Friday July 17th. The swell drops right off to 1 ft to 2 ft, but the period jumps to 14–15 seconds from the W and WNW. That’s proper long-period groundswell, but the energy is minimal (184 down to 69). Still cross-shore wind, so even that tiny glassy potential is trashed. Halawa is a reef/river, which is actually the kind of setup that can handle long-period swell, but there’s just not enough size or clean wind to make it worth paddling out. By Saturday July 18th, we’re back to the same ENE short-period slop again, and it fades into nothing by Monday morning July 20th with just 0.7 ft and 15 energy.
So, a gap of several days with no real recommendations. Honestly, if you are a paddle surfer, you’re looking at a blank run. This is one of those stretches where the setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The wind is consistent and cross-shore, which is ideal for kites, and there’s enough bumpy swell to ride. For surfers? Save your energy. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
