The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Halawa.
Right off the bat, it’s a bit of a quiet start. The first week or so is pretty much a write-off, with nothing surfable until the end of August. The wind is a constant problem – mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore breezes, nothing clean. The swell is small and weak, with the combined energy staying under 203 (moderate at best) and the periods are short, around 6 to 7 seconds on the early stuff, which gives you no push.
We’ve got a real drought here until around Thursday, 31st August. That’s a solid 11-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. Then the picture shifts. A bigger, longer-period groundswell shows up on the afternoon of Sunday, 30th August. The swell bumps up to 7ft from the ENE, with a very long 13-second period and the combined energy jumps to 1554 (strong wave energy). The problem is the wind is still cross-onshore and the surf conditions are poor.
But, Monday, 31st August afternoon shows a glimmer. The swell hits 8ft from the ENE, period holds at 13 seconds, and the energy is a whopping 2078 (very strong). The wind goes cross-shore. This is big, powerful swell – only for experienced surfers. It’s still a bit lumpy with the cross-chop, but the energy is real. Then into the first week of September, we see two days – Tuesday, 1st September and Wednesday, 2nd September – with solid 8ft to 8ft ENE swells, long periods between 10 and 12 seconds, and strong wave energy (1458 to 2317). The wind stays cross-shore, still not perfect, but it's the best we’ve got in this whole forecast. For Halawa, a reef/river break, that long-period groundswell can line up well, but the cross wind will keep it from being a true standout.
Honestly, there are no absolute standouts here. The closest we get to a session is Tuesday, 1st September and Wednesday, 2nd September, where the swell is solid, the energy is pumping, and the wind is at least manageable. If you’re an expert and hungry, those two days are your window. For everyone else, this is a two-week stretch where you’d be better off doing something else.
Rusty.
