The Lowdown
Alright team, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks. The only break on the menu is Halawa (Reef/River), and it’s a frustrating forecast.
Starting Thursday, the 20th of August, the water is 80°, which is normal for the season. But the wind is a killer. We’ve got a cross-shore breeze from the East, building to 22 mph by the weekend, making the ocean lumpy and choppy. The swell is mostly short-period windswell, under 8 seconds, with weak to moderate energy (93-309). It’s all poor surf conditions. Nothing to paddle out for.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a bust. Swell drops to 1.0 ft, and the fresh breeze is just ruining it. Through the 24th, we see a spike to 6 ft on Monday morning, but it’s short period (6 seconds) and cross-shore, so it’s a messy, blown-out situation.
From the 25th of August through the morning of the 4th of September, it’s a total drought. The swell is tiny and confused, and the wind never really lets up. It’s a long, blank stretch.
Now, Friday, the 4th of September is the only flicker of hope. The morning shows a 2 ft swell from the West with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s real groundswell, and the energy is moderate (242). The wind turns light and offshore from the North, so it’ll be glassy clean. That’s a huge positive. The afternoon bumps up to 6 ft from the ENE, still with a light offshore breeze, but the period drops to 9 seconds. The energy is strong (674). This is a promising window, but it’s a long way out, so keep your expectations in check. For a reef setup like Halawa, that long-period west swell and glassy morning could be a treat, but it’s a gamble.
The standout is the morning of Friday, 4th September. The 2 ft West swell with that 16-second period and light offshore wind is the only real chance at clean waves. The afternoon also has a shot with the bigger 6 ft swell. The rest of the forecast? It’s a better scene for kite surfing than paddle surfing, truth be told.
Rusty.
