Alright, Rusty here again, same outlook, just in feet and miles per hour so it makes sense on the other side of the tape.
Right off the bat, I hate to say it, but this whole 16-day window for Halawa is a total dud. Every single forecast entry is poor surf conditions with a score of zero. Not one session worth getting wet for.
Starting Thursday, 9th July, the trades are howling from the E and ENE at 18 to 22 mph, cross-shore or cross-onshore. The swell is mostly ENE, running 6 to 8 ft, but the period is short — 7 to 8 seconds — so it’s lumpy, weak energy, and blown to bits. The combined wave energy hits 666 (moderate) on Sunday, 12th July, but with those winds, it’s just a washing machine. On Tuesday, 14th July afternoon, we get a tiny 2 ft W swell with a 16-second period and 234 energy (moderate), but the wind is still cross and fresh at 18 mph.
After the 17th of July, it really bottoms out. Friday, 17th July shows a 2 ft W swell with a 15-second period and only 139 energy (weak). Saturday, 18th July, it’s 1 ft WNW at 13 seconds, 59 energy (weak). By Sunday, 19th July and Monday, 20th July, we’re looking at 0.7 ft to 1 ft swells with 12 to 13-second periods and energy as low as 12 (weak). These are groundswell pulses, but there’s just no size and still a fresh cross-shore wind, so it’s a no-go.
There’s a small bump around 20th and 21st July, with 5 to 6 ft ENE swell and 8-second periods, but the winds are cross-shore from the ENE at 15 to 16 mph. The energy sits at 244 to 310 (moderate), but the quality is still poor. From 22nd to 24th July, it fades again into weak, short-period ankle-biters.
Halawa is a reef and river setup, and it’s fairly consistent, but with these conditions, there’s no clean ride. The optimum swell direction here is NNW, and we’re getting ENE and a few W pulses instead. With strong cross-shore winds and short-period chop, the face is just a mess.
If you’re into kite surfing, the constant 15 to 22 mph trades and lumpy 6 to 8 ft surf might look fun for jumping, but for a paddle surfer, there’s nothing here.
Hang in there — the spot is fairly consistent, so this dry spell should pass. Forecasts can always flip.
Rusty.
