Alright, Rusty again. Let’s break down Halawa (reef/river) in feet and knots, ‘cause I know some of you think that way.
We’re lookin’ at a tough 16-day window, no two ways about it. There’s a huge, frustrating gap right at the start. The first surf that’s even worth a mention doesn't show up until Tuesday the 14th of July, and it’s only a marginal call. That’s a solid 10-day dry spell of nothing but poor, lumpy conditions.
From Saturday the 4th all the way through Monday the 13th, it’s a total bust. The trades are crankin’ at 16-22 knots from the ENE and E, blastin’ straight across the swell. Constant cross-shore chop, messy sea, unrideable. The swell hangs around 6ft to 8ft, but it’s short-period junk at 7-8 seconds – all windswell – and it’s comin’ from the wrong way. Halawa wants a NW-N wind, not this ENE slop. Water temp is 79°, dead average for the season. The combined wave energy hits moderate to strong (numbers like 438 to 624), but with that wind and direction, it’s all a waste. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing – too much wind, too much chop.
Now, on Tuesday the 14th of July, we get a tiny flicker. The morning’s still a zero, but the afternoon shows a marginal surf forecast with questionable tide. This is your only real standout for the whole stretch. The swell is 6ft from the ENE, still short at 8 seconds, but the wind backs off a bit to 16 knots from the E. The combined energy is strong at 646. Still cross-shore, but a moderate breeze means it might be a little less choppy. It’s not clean, it’s not glassy, and it’s the wrong direction, so it’s a gamble. If you’re desperate, that Tuesday afternoon is your best shot. After that, Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th drop back to poor with similar wind, and the last few days into Sunday the 19th see the energy fade to weak levels (80-142) with tiny 2ft to 3ft waves. No dice.
So, a massive 10-day gap of junk, one marginal afternoon on the 14th, then back to poor. Grim, but it happens. Forecasts can shift, but for now, leave the stick at home.
Rusty.
