The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cooking out at Halawa.
First off, I gotta be straight with you: this stretch of the next 16 days is a bit of a tough pill to swallow. Looking at the whole picture, the surf is just not playing nice for us paddle surfers. We're looking at a long, quiet run with the wind messing things up pretty much the whole time. The water temp is running about average for this time of year, which is the only thing that feels normal.
We start off the forecast on Tuesday, the 18th of August. It's a no-go. Swell is a weak 4ft from the ENE, but with a short period of only 7 seconds and a stiff cross-breeze, it's all chop and no shape. The wave energy is a moderate 195. It's just not worth paddling out for.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are flat and poor. We're talking tiny 2ft waves, with that ENE wind keeping things ugly. We then roll into Friday the 21st with a bit more size—5ft—but the period is still short at 7 seconds, and the cross-shore wind is a buzzkill. Combined energy bumps up to 182, but it's messy.
Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd are a real head-scratcher. We get a tiny change in swell direction from the NW, with a longer period of 10 to 14 seconds, but the swell heights are pathetic—0.9ft to 2ft. On top of that, we've got a Fresh breeze howling from the ENE (19 to 22 mph) making it lumpy. Forget it.
The end of the first week and into the second week is where it gets interesting, but not for us. On Monday the 24th, the swell pumps up to 8ft from the ENE with a moderate period of 8 seconds. That's a strong wave energy of 864, but the wind is a strong cross-shore at 25 mph. That big, messy swell with that wind is a recipe for a washing machine. For a reef/river break like Halawa, this is looking way more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle session.
The same goes for Tuesday the 25th through Wednesday the 26th. We've got consistent 7ft to 8ft swell from the ENE, but again, the wind is just too strong (19 to 25 mph) and cross. The wave energy is in the 500 to 700 range, but it's going to be blown out. This is expert-only territory at best, and honestly, not very appealing.
Then from Thursday the 27th of August all the way to Monday the 1st of September, the plug is pulled. We're looking at flat, weak swell (0.3ft to 1ft) with days of nothing but wind. There's a small pulse late on Sunday the 30th with a 4ft swell from the ENE and a 10-second period (energy 366), but the wind is onshore. A similar pulse comes through on Monday the 31st, but it's just not clean.
In the final days, we see a flicker of life on Wednesday the 2nd of September. A 0.9ft WNW groundswell with a very long 14-second period shows up. This is the kind of long-period energy that could wrap nicely into a river mouth like Halawa, giving you some of that clean, lined-up potential. But it's small, and the wind is onshore.
Bottom line: There are no good days for traditional surfing in this entire 16-day window. The swell either has no shape, the wind is wrecking it, or it's flat. If you're a kiter, maybe the strong wind days from the 24th to the 26th are your jam. For the rest of us, it's a hard pass. We'll have to wait for the next system.
Rusty.
