The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, giving you the lowdown for Halawa (reef/river) in feet and degrees.
Water temp’s about 80°, right on average for this time of year, so no surprises there. But the surf? Man, it’s a rough stretch.
We kick off Friday the 21st. A 5ft swell from the east, but with a short 7-second period and a 19 mph cross-wind, it’s lumpy and ugly. Combined energy is moderate at 247. It’s just not surfable. That pretty much sets the tone for the rest of August—little bumps of 1ft to 2ft, all blown out by fresh cross-breezes.
The first real bump in energy happens Monday the 31st of August. The swell climbs to 8ft from the east-northeast with a 10-second period, and strong energy at 1177. The wind is still fresh and cross-shore, so it’ll be lumpy. Only for experienced surfers willing to deal with the chop.
Tuesday the 1st of September is the biggest—8ft from the northeast—but the wind is cross-on and choppy. Energy is massive at 1836, but the quality’s poor.
Now, the one to watch: Thursday the 3rd of September. The swell drops to 3ft from the east-northeast, but the wind turns light offshore from the south-southeast at just 6 mph. Conditions are clean. The combined energy is a light 160, so it’s small, but it’s going to be glassy. For the reef/river setup, this is your window for a fun session on a longboard.
After that, it’s flat again. Friday the 4th drops to 1ft with onshore wind, and Saturday the 5th pushes back up to 5ft from the east-northeast, but with a terrible 5-second period and fresh cross-breeze.
Bottom line: a long, dry spell, one clean day on September 3rd for small-wave fans, and a couple of bigger, choppy days for the hardcore crew. Don’t book your trip around the long-range stuff.
Rusty.
