The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, we’ve got a pretty grim run ahead. The finder is showing a whole lot of nothing for the first week and a half. From Sunday, the 19th, right through to the end of July, the conditions are just poor—cross-shore winds, lumpy chop, and the swell is all over the place. There’s a big gap there with no real recommendations, so don’t hold your breath for a surf this week.
The only flicker of hope comes right at the end of the period, around Tuesday, the 28th of July, and into Wednesday, the 29th. That’s the one time the energy kicks up. We’re looking at a solid groundswell from the ENE, with a very long period of 12 seconds. That’s proper energy.
Tuesday afternoon sees a powerful 8ft swell from the ENE, with a very long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is massive—1649 (strong, very strong). That’s a lot of water moving. Wednesday morning is still pumping with 7ft from the ENE, period 12 seconds, and energy at 1024 (strong). The wind is still cross-shore, so it won’t be perfect, but it’s a massive step up from what we’ve had.
The standout is Halawa – it’s a reef/river setup, so it’s made for these long-period groundswells. That ENE swell direction is a solid match for the optimum direction. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. For a spot that’s “fairly consistent” and can get crowds sometimes, this is the one to watch. But be warned: with 8ft, that’s getting into expert territory if you’re not comfortable. Beginners, stay out of the water on Tuesday.
Wednesday morning is also a strong option, but the size drops a bit to 7ft. Still a powerful, long-period swell. The cross-shore wind will keep it from being glassy, but it’s a lot better than the rest of the forecast.
The rest of the month after that? Wednesday afternoon and Thursday see the energy drop fast, and by Friday we’re back to poor conditions. The second week is a write-off with weak, short-period swell and strong cross-shore winds.
So, keep your eyes on Tuesday, the 28th, and Wednesday, the 29th. That’s your window. After that, it’s back to the waiting game.
Rusty.
