The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for the next 16 days. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burn to start, but the second week has some serious potential if you’re willing to wait.
The first recommendation is for Halawa (a reef/river setup) starting on the morning of Thursday, July 16th. The water is sitting at a warm 79°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The outlook kicks off with a long stretch of tough conditions. From Thursday, July 16th, right through to the morning of Monday, July 27th, the surf is just plain poor. It’s a real bummer – we’re looking at a solid 11-day gap with no good waves. The swell is small, winds are cross-shore and fresh, and the energy is weak. For example, the 16th morning has a small 2ft swell from the west with a period of 14 seconds, but the combined energy (301) is moderate, and the wind rips at 19 mph creating lumpy chop. Nothing to get excited about.
Now, the real story starts to shift on the afternoon of Monday, July 27th. That’s when we finally see some life. The swell picks up significantly – 8ft from the ENE with a period of 15 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, meaning it’ll have heaps of push and power, but it can be a bit straight at beach breaks. For a reef/river spot like Halawa, this could be the ticket. The wind eases to 12 mph, but it’s still cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect. The combined energy jumps to 3199 – that’s strong energy. The score is a 2/10, but it’s the first sign of anything decent.
The standout window is Tuesday, July 28th. This is the best of the whole run. The morning brings a solid 12ft swell from the ENE, and the period is a very long 14 seconds. The wind drops to just 9 mph from the ENE, but it’s still cross-onshore, keeping it a little choppy. The combined energy is a massive 6031 – that’s very strong energy. The afternoon is similar, with an 12ft swell from the ENE and a 13-second period, and the wind shifts to the NE at 9 mph. The energy is even higher at 6201. This is big, powerful stuff. Because it’s over 8ft, this is strictly for experts only. The cross-onshore wind is a bit of a drag, but with that kind of juice, the right bank at Halawa could be absolutely firing. This is the day to circle.
Wednesday, July 29th still has massive swell – 13ft from the NE with a period of 12 to 13 seconds. The combined energy is still in the thousands (4963 in the morning, 4659 in the afternoon), and the wind improves to a cross-shore from the east at 9-12 mph. Still big, still for experts only, but cleaner conditions than Tuesday.
After that, things drop off quickly. Thursday, July 30th sees the swell back down to 5ft and the energy down to 618, and by the afternoon it’s poor again. The rest of the run into Friday, July 31st is tiny – just 0.3ft with next to no energy.
So, to wrap it up: the first 11 days are a complete write-off. The only real standout is Tuesday, July 28th, with huge, powerful, groundswell at Halawa. It’s for the experienced crew only, and the wind is a little messy, but the energy is undeniable. If you’re thirsty for a paddle, that’s your day.
Stay wet,
Rusty
