The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. It’s gonna be a frustrating one.
Right now, the surf is flat. I’m talking flatter than a pancake. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing until we get a few days of very small, very poor waves that just aren't worth paddling for. The water temp at Halawa is sitting right on 80°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real pulse of energy we see is on Sunday, the 23rd of August. Halawa (Big Island) sees a chunky 7 ft swell from the ENE, but the wind is howling from the ENE at 22 mph, making it a lumpy, cross-shore mess. The wave energy is moderate (554), but honestly, it's blown out. That’s a no-go for paddle surfing, that setup is more interesting for kite surfing.
After that, the cross-shore winds just don’t let up. We’ve got a serious gap with no good surf. The next flash of something is on Wednesday, the 26th of August, with another 7 ft pulse from the ENE and moderate energy (369), but again, the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore. It’s just choppy, lumpy, and messy.
The standout here, if you can call it that, is the morning of Wednesday, the 2nd of September. The swell is tiny, just 0.3 ft from the NW, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, giving us a clean surface. The period is a long 13 seconds, which is a groundswell, but there’s next to no energy (6). It’s a clean, flat, and glassy morning. That’s the best we get, but it’s a session for the longboard, not for power.
