The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for Halawa. This is a reef and river setup that needs a solid window to come alive, and unfortunately, the next two weeks are a mixed bag. The water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off on the 22nd of August with barely a ripple – 1ft of weak, short-period swell from the west, and a fresh cross-breeze blowing 22 mph. The combined energy is weak (27), and conditions are lumpy and poor. Honestly, it’s a write-off for days. Saturday the 22nd through to the 29th of August is a real struggle. The swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is a constant cross or cross-onshore, never letting the surface clean up. There’s a moment on the 27th of August where the swell bumps up to 5ft from the east, but the period drops to a short 6 seconds and the cross-wind ruins it. The combined energy climbs to moderate (167), but it’s still a messy affair. No recommendations here, folks – the breaks are just not cooperating. It’s a tough stretch, but keep the faith; it tends not to stay poor forever.
The first real standout arrives on the 2nd of September. Wednesday afternoon shapes up with 6ft of swell from the east-northeast, a period of 8 seconds, and combined energy hitting moderate (358). The wind drops to just 3 mph from the east, turning glassy. That’s a major positive – clean, glassy surf at Halawa. The swell direction is a bit off the optimum NNW, but for a reef break, the size is manageable for intermediates. Just a heads up, the break is “sometimes” crowded, so expect some company. This is the best window in the entire outlook.
From the 3rd of September onwards, it’s back to frustration. The swell holds around 7ft to 7ft from the east-northeast, but those cross-winds kick back in at 12 to 18 mph, making it choppy and poor. By the 5th of September, the energy drops to weak (63) with tiny 1ft swell, and then on the 6th of September, it jumps back to 7ft with a short period and a fresh cross-breeze. None of this is worth paddling out for.
So, to wrap it up: the only day that really shines is the 2nd of September, Wednesday afternoon, with glassy conditions and clean 6ft surf. Before that, it’s a long gap of poor, cross-wind slop. For the rest of the run, keep the board in the bag and check back. Rusty.
