The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this stretch is a tough one for us at Cliffs. It’s a beach and reef setup, exposed to the south swell, but the whole 16-day window is a real battle to find anything worth paddling out for. The water temp’s sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days, starting Wednesday the 15th, are a write-off. You’ve got a tiny 2ft of west swell, but it’s crossed up with an easterly breeze and the combined energy is only moderate (383). The surf quality is poor, the wind’s on it, and it’s just not a goer. That pattern sticks right through to the end of the first week—Friday the 19th and the weekend are all marginal at best, with swell dropping to 2ft and a fresh cross-off easterly wind keeping things clean but too weak. The energy gets as low as 141, so it’s a glassy but gutless ocean.
We’ve got a long gap of nothing worthwhile here. Honestly, there’s no standout day in the first 10 days. The swell never really gets above 3ft, and even when it does, the wind is always a cross-off easterly, which keeps it clean but doesn’t build any real power. The best of a bad lot might be Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, where the swell lifts to 3ft–3ft from the SSW, with a moderate energy around 700. The winds are still cross-off, so it’s rideable, but it’s only marginal. Nothing to write home about.
If you’re desperate, the 25th and 26th mornings offer the cleanest chances with that moderate breeze, but the surf is still tiny. No true standout waves here—this is a quiet spell where the ocean’s just not delivering. For the crowd profile, it’s sometimes busy, but with conditions this poor, I doubt many will be out.
So, mate, if you’re hanging for a wave, you’ll have to wait. The second week is more of the same—small, clean, but weak. The 30th of July sees the energy drop to 150, and it’s a flat end. For now, the setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the steady cross-off wind and small waves. Hang tight.
Rusty.
