The Lowdown

Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Bomboras.

Honestly, the first week or so is pretty flat and frustrating. You’ve got a tiny bit of swell, but the wind is a constant problem. The mornings are mostly cross-offshore, and the afternoons are often fresh offshore, but the wave heights are barely a ripple. There’s a bit of a pulse building from the 11th, but it’s not until the 12th of August that things start to get interesting.

The standout session is shaping up to be Tuesday, the 12th of August. The swell is set to jump to 3ft, coming from the S with a lovely long period of 18 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy reading is a solid 861 (strong). The wind is offshore from the ENE at 18-22 mph, which will keep the faces clean. This is a classic Bomboras day – a reef break that loves a long-period S swell. The 3ft might not sound huge, but with that period and direction, it’ll be a proper, powerful wave. It’s a bit much for beginners, but for intermediates and up, it’s the best on offer.

The water is a toasty 81°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no wetsuit needed.

The day after, on the 13th, the swell hangs in around 3-4ft with a slightly shorter period, but the wind gets stronger, hitting 25 mph, which makes paddling a real mission. It’s still clean, but it’s a battle.

After that, the swell fades and the wind stays strong for the rest of the window. The 15th and 16th see a drop to 1-3ft, and the offshore wind is so strong (28 mph) that it’s blowin’ the tops off the waves. It’s surfable but only for the hardcore. The second week is pretty grim – the swell is small, and the wind is relentless. There’s a tiny window on the 18th with a bit more energy, but it’s still marginal.

Overall, if you’ve got a flexible schedule, hold out for the 12th of August. That’s your day. The rest of the time, it’s a lot of wind and not much to ride.

Rusty.
