The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the water is sitting at 70° – that’s a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s like bathwater out there, very unusual.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a struggle. We’ve got small, weak swell and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, so nothing is really clean. The combined energy is low, around 139 to 297, which is just not enough to get excited about. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are a write-off – tiny 1ft swell, poor conditions. Over the weekend and into the start of the next week, it stays marginal. The swell bumps up a bit to 2ft to 3ft, but the quality is just not there.
The real standout window starts to appear around Wednesday the 23rd of July. We see a noticeable jump in the combined energy, hitting 1018, and the swell picks up to 5ft from the S, with a 15 second period. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is light cross-onshore in the morning, which is acceptable, but it’s still not glassy. Thursday the 24th afternoon sees the swell hit 5ft from the S, with energy climbing to 1274, and light cross-onshore winds again. This is the best on offer in the whole run. It’s still a “marginal” call, but it’s the best we’ve got.
For the second week, the swell hangs around 3ft to 5ft, with that long period (15-19 seconds) sticking around. The energy stays solid, between 900 and 1285. The wind is mostly light cross-on or onshore, so it’s not going to be perfect. Keep an eye on the mornings, especially Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th, when the swell is 4ft from the SW with a 19-second period – that’s a very long period swell, which will be better at the point, but it’s a bit unreliable for a beach break. The crowds at Malibu (Malibu) are always an issue, so don’t expect any peace and quiet.
The short story: The first few days are a bust. The best chance for a decent wave is around Thursday the 24th of July into the weekend, with the biggest swell and the most energy. It’s not a classic, but it’s something to aim for.
Rusty.
