The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for us.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is gonna be a real test of patience. The surf is tiny, the winds are messy, and conditions are just plain flat or poor. We’re looking at a dry spell from now through the end of August, with only small, weak- energy swells and mostly cross or cross-onshore breezes. It’s not until we get into the first week of September that things start to show a bit of life.
Our first real chance to get wet comes on Wednesday 4th September. Malibu (Malibu) wakes up to a clean morning with light offshore winds from the SSW at 6 mph. The swell is 4 ft from the SSW, with a long period of 19 seconds, giving it real groundswell energy. The combined energy is a solid 1086 (moderate-to-strong energy), so there’s some push behind it. That long period will make the waves wall up nicely down the point, but it can also make the sets a bit lazy and spaced out – good for picking off the right ones. The water is sitting at 70°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit. Crowds are the only downside here – this spot is always packed, so expect company.
Then on Saturday 5th September, we get another early morning shot. The swell is a touch bigger at 4 ft, still from the SSW, with a period of 18 seconds. The combined energy is 1256 (strong wave energy). Winds are cross-on from the SSW at 6 mph, which is still workable. The water is still warm. It’s not the cleanest glass, but it’s a damn sight better than anything we’ve had all week. The surf is right on the edge of being too big for beginners, but for anyone who’s been waiting, it’s the best on offer.
If you’re looking for the standout, I’d say the Thursday 4th September morning is the pick. The offshore wind, the long-period groundswell, and the first real pulse of energy make it the one to circle. After that, the Saturday 5th September morning is a solid backup.
Alright, that’s the long and short of it. Hang in there, and be ready for that first week of September.
Rusty.
