The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what's cookin' for the Cardiff Reef stretch.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a tough spell. We've got a long stretch of mornings with tiny little cross-on slop and afternoons that are mostly unsurfable. The watch starts around Saturday the 22nd, but you'll be fightin' for anything rideable. There's a consistent run of these SSW groundswells, some with really solid period pushing 16 to 20 seconds, which would be killer at a proper point or reef, but here at Cardiff they tend to flatten out and run straight. The silver lining is the wind is often light, even offshore at times, so the surface could be smooth even if the bumps are small.
For the first week, it's mostly stuff in the 2ft to 4ft range. The energy readings are all over the shop, from a weak 200 up to a moderate 642. Thursday the 28th has a 3ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and light cross-on wind – mediocre, but the best you'll see for a few days. The water is sitting at 71°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezin' while you're waitin' for a set.
Your best option in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. We see the SSW swell bumpin' up to 5ft with a decent 17-second period and clean, light offshore wind from the WNW. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1227. The wind will be perfect; the wave faces should be lined up. The only thing holdin' it back from a full-blown classic is the crowd factor – Cardiff Reef can get packed when it's glassy and has a little push.
Later that same afternoon, the wind drops to near nothing and the swell hangs in at 4ft with a 16-second period and a combined energy of 873. Dead calm conditions are a major win for those later sessions, but you'll be sharing the peak with everyone else.
On the 4th of September, there's a pulse that looks serious: a 5ft SSW groundswell with a 19-second period (extra long period) and a massive combined energy of 2062. That's a lot of water movin'. For a beginner, that's a stay-on-the-beach day. For an expert, it could be going off, but a 19-second period at a beachbreak like Cardiff is gonna be fat, straight, and likely closing out. It's more of a show than a surf session. I'd save your energy for that Saturday morning the 5th.
So, to sum it up: the next week is a waiting game with tiny, inconsistent waves. Circle the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. That 5ft SSW groundswell with the offshore wind and clean faces is the standout. Expect the lineup to be busy.
