The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for our local stretch.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The first few days are a write-off, with poor surf conditions and weak energy. The first real sniff of a wave comes on Monday the 7th, but it’s marginal. We’re looking at a 7ft SSW swell with a moderate 13-second period, which is a solid groundswell size, but the wind is onshore from the WNW at 9 mph. That’s going to chop it up, and the combined energy is strong (1336). It’s really only for the experienced crew who don’t mind a bit of a battle.

The standouts in this 16-day window are not massive, but there are a couple of windows where the stars align. The best bet looks to be on Sunday the 13th morning. We’ve got a 5ft W swell with a short period of 8 seconds – so it’s a bit lumpy and windswell – but the wind is offshore from the SSW at 9 mph, creating clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate (479). This is the pick of the bunch for a fun, clean session if you’re not a beginner; it’s right on the edge of being too big for the less experienced.

After that, it’s a slow decline. We get a few more mornings with light winds and knee-to-waist high swell from the SW, but the energy is weak (in the 300-600 range) and the wind often swings cross-shore or onshore. The period on the 18th and 20th does get long (19 seconds), which would be a beautiful groundswell at a point break, but here at Scripps Pier, with the wind being cross-on, it’s just not going to shape up. You’ll get long waits between sets.

Overall, it’s a patchy outlook. There’s nothing that’s going to blow your hair back, but if you’re keen for a paddle, the early morning of Sunday the 13th is the only time I’d be waxing up.

Rusty.
