The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up, looking at the 16-day window for D and W, it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is basically a flat spell with a few weak pulses that just don’t line up right. The first real chance for a wave doesn’t show up until Thursday the 3rd of September, and even then, it’s a real gamble.
For the first two weeks, from Thursday the 20th of August right through to Wednesday the 3rd of September, the surf is practically non-existent. We’re talking days of tiny, weak swells, mostly under 2ft, and almost always with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The water is a warm 70°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. The combined energy is weak, rarely breaking 100 (getting as low as 14 on the 21st), so you’re looking at flat, choppy conditions. It’s a real bummer.
Now, the one tiny glimmer in this whole forecast is on the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. A swell from the WNW pushes in at 5ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 517 (moderate wave energy), which is the biggest pulse we’ll see. It’s a cross-shore wind from the SSE, which is rare and could offer a clean-ish window. But this is a beach/jetty setup, and with that short period, it’s going to be a bit wonky and close out. It’s marginal at best, and honestly, the conditions are still questionable. With the swell size, it’s starting to get a bit much for beginners, but it’s not a proper groundswell for the experts to get excited about either.
Honestly, there’s no standout day here. The Thursday morning of the 3rd is the only thing even worth a look, but I’d keep your expectations on the floor. It’s the kind of setup that might be more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle guys. For the rest of the window, you’re better off doing something else. The long-range hope for Tuesday the 25th of August shows a bit of energy (308), but it’s still small and onshore. It’s a rough run.
Rusty.
