Table - best surf conditions forecast for D and W over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for D and W.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a grim stretch. We’re looking at a solid 9-day dry spell with no worthwhile surf. From Thursday the 9th of July right through to Friday the 17th, it’s all poor surf conditions with tiny, weak swell. The waves barely get above 3 ft, and the energy is pretty weak. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 18th of July. The morning session is where it’s at. The swell is only 2 ft, but it’s coming from the southwest with a long period of 18 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is moderate, and the wind is glassy, which is a major positive. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there. The break is a beach/jetty setup, so that long period could make it a bit straight and sectiony, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and crowds are only sometimes a problem, so you might have it to yourself. This is your one standout. The swell direction (SW) is a good match for the optimum direction (NW) – not perfect, but close enough.
After that morning window, the wind picks up to a moderate breeze from the WSW in the afternoon, so that window is short. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th still have some waist-high swell (2 ft) and decent energy, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’ll be bumpy. Not a total write-off if you’re desperate, but not the clean stuff from Saturday morning.
From Tuesday the 21st onward, the swell drops off again, getting small and weak (2 ft to 3 ft, energy dropping off fast). The period gets short and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore again. The forecast confidence is low for the second week, but honestly, it doesn’t look like it’ll turn around. Just a long, flat run.
So, bottom line: if you want a wave, be at D and W on the morning of Saturday the 18th of July. That’s your one shot.
