The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks at D and W are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, messy conditions with nothing worth paddling out for – at least for the first week and a half. The good news is, there’s a tiny flicker of hope right at the end of the outlook, but it’s a long way off.
The problem is we’re stuck in a pattern of tiny, wind-affected SW swells with poor cross-onshore or onshore winds. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing to complain about there, but you wouldn’t know it from the surf. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate at best, often with readings like 129 or 114 – just not enough juice to get anything going.
From Wednesday 15 July right through to Sunday 26 July, it’s a total write-off. Every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. The swell heights barely creep above 2ft, and when they do, the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, chopping it up. The period is all over the place – sometimes a long 16-18 seconds, but that doesn’t help when the swell is that small. It’s just a waste of a deepwater groundswell. Honestly, for most of this period, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you’re into that.
Then, after a solid 12 days of nothing, we get a glimmer. On Monday 27 July morning, the forecast shows a pulse of 4ft SW swell with a 18-second period. That’s a proper long-period groundswell, and the combined energy jumps right up to 1029 (moderate-to-strong). The wind is light and onshore from the SW, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but it’s far from the worst we’ve seen. The rating is still only a 2/10, so it’s marginal, but for this break, that’s about as good as it gets in this window. The size is okay for intermediates, but beginners might find it a little much. It’s a beach/jetty setup, so that long period might make it a bit straight and fast, but it’s the only half-decent chance we’ll get.
If you’re desperate, keep an eye on that Monday morning session. Otherwise, you’re waiting for a long time.
Rusty.
