Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer at D and W. I'll be straight with you – it's a pretty bleak stretch of surf ahead for this spot over the next 16 days. We've got a long, quiet run of small, weak waves, so don't get your hopes up for anything firing.
Things kick off this Sunday afternoon, July 5th, but it's not much to write home about. D and W is a sheltered beach and jetty setup, needing a north-west swell to really work, and what we've got is a tiny 2 ft of weak, short-period windswell from the west. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but that's about the only positive. The onshore breeze will keep things messy. It's a zero out of ten for me.
The first week is pretty much a write-off. We roll through Monday the 6th with a bump to 3 ft, but that cross-on wind makes it look more like a washing machine than a wave. The energy is weak, and the swell direction is all wrong. We see a brief flicker on Wednesday the 8th where the period pushes up to 9 seconds, giving a little more push, and the energy climbs to a moderate 111, but the 3 ft swell from the west, combined with that onshore wind, still means poor surf conditions. By Thursday the 9th, the period hits 10 seconds, and you might see some lines pushing 3 ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore, chopping it all up. The energy reading of 165 tells a story of more water moving, but it's not translating into anything rideable under these winds. From Friday the 10th onwards, the swell collapses. We're dropping into ankle-slashing 1.0 ft to 2 ft stuff for the rest of that week and into the next. It's flat, it's messy, and it's not worth your time.
You're looking at a solid gap of nothing here. The next time anything even registers is about a week and a half later. The second week doesn't offer any clean windows either. Sure, the period gets long again, and we see some energy readings jump into the strong range, like on Tuesday the 14th afternoon with 1 ft at a very long 18 seconds and energy of 212. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th also show some moderate-to-strong energy levels (176, 153), but the swell size is still only 1 ft. A long period swell this small just doesn't have the height to break properly at a beach like this. You'll see a lumpy, bumpy ocean, not a wave you can ride. Later in the period, Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th of July show stronger energy readings, hitting 280 and 330, with swells from the southwest around 2 ft. But again, 2 ft with these onshore winds and the wrong direction for the break won't turn into anything decent. The swell is from the southwest, not the optimum northwest.
Honestly, for this stretch, it's all about the potential for a better day, but it's not here. The spot is sheltered, and when the wind is onshore and the swell is from the west or southwest, it just cannot get good. Don't bother paddling out. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it can't stay flat forever.
Rusty.
