The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll level with you, it’s been a rough stretch for Abalone Cove (reef). The forecast is a long, flat run with barely a whisper of surf for the first nine days or so. From Wednesday 19th August right through to Friday 28th August, every single session is rated as poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny – mostly 1.0 to 2 ft – and the wind is never really on our side. It’s cross or cross-onshore, with a moderate breeze most afternoons, so the surface is chopped up and messy. There’s nothing to get excited about at all.
The water temperature sits at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when there’s nothing to ride.
Then we hit the very end of the run. On Sunday 30th August, the morning session finally shows a glimmer. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the SSW with a 15-second period, and the combined energy of all swells here climbs to 360 (moderate wave energy). But the real headline is the wind: it’s glassy. Clean, smooth, no breeze. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – and honestly, for a place that’s been dead for over a week, that’s like finding a cold beer in the desert. It’s still only 3 ft, and the reef here is sheltered and inconsistent, so don’t expect a big session. But if you’re desperate for a paddle, that Sunday morning is the only time in the whole 16-day window that’s even worth looking at.
After that, it’s back to small, poor conditions with cross-shore winds through to the start of September. This is a long, quiet stretch for Abalone Cove, and the pattern is pretty normal for a sheltered spot that only really works when the swell direction and winds align perfectly.
