The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at what’s coming up.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak stretch for Abalone Cove. This sheltered reef is the only spot to think about, but it’s inconsistent, and the forecast is full of poor conditions. The water is sitting at about 69°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – comfortable, but it won’t help the waves.
We don’t see any proper surfable windows until Monday the 24th morning. Even then, it’s tiny – just 1 ft of southwest swell, but with glassy conditions and 5 km/h wind. That’s as clean as it gets here, though the energy is weak (232). It’s a beginner-friendly wave anyway, so if you’re just learning or want a longboard cruise, that Monday morning is your best chance.
After that, it’s flat and messy again. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the swell barely reaches 2 ft to 2 ft for days. The energy stays in the low to mid hundreds – nothing exciting. This poor run carries through the end of August.
Heading toward the first few days of September, there’s a bit more push. Saturday the 5th shows 3 ft from the SSW with wave energy climbing into the 400s and 500s. But the wind is cross or onshore, so quality is still marginal. The reef will get some shape because the swell direction matches the optimum southwest, but the wind will likely spoil it.
The best looking window in the whole 16 days? I’d say Friday the 4th of September morning. We’ve got 3 ft of SSW groundswell with a 18-second period – that’s long period, meaning good energy and clean lines. The combined energy hits 607, the strongest in the forecast, and the wind is barely a whisper at 5 km/h from the SSW (cross-on). It’s still marginal, but that’s the pick of a quiet bunch. Crowds are possible, so stay sharp.
Otherwise, this is a stretch where you might want to leave the board at home. Gaps of several days with nothing worthwhile are normal here when it’s inconsistent like this.
Stay patient. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
