The Lowdown
Yo, it's Rusty here. Let's talk about the next couple of weeks at Rincon. It's a bit of a slow start, but there's some decent stuff building later on.
The first real surfable waves show up on the afternoon of Saturday, August 22nd. We're looking at tiny 1.0ft swell from the SSW, but the period is nice and long at 15 seconds, giving it a bit of push. The energy is moderate. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze, so it'll be clean. It's small, but it's a start.
Sunday the 23rd afternoon sees a slight bump to 1ft and the energy picks up. Still clean with that light cross-off wind. Through Monday and Tuesday it stays in the same small, clean range, with the swell direction shifting to SW. The period stays long, between 14 and 17 seconds, making those little waves feel more solid.
Now, the first real standout window opens up on the morning of Wednesday, August 26th. The swell builds to 3ft from the S, with a period of 13 seconds. The energy jumps to a solid level, and the wind is light and cross-off, making for clean, glassy conditions. This is the best we've seen so far. The surf continues to build through the afternoon to 3ft with more energy. It's small still, but it's clean, has some push, and the direction is right for Rincon, which likes a bit of North in the swell. This is a good call for a paddle.
The energy spikes again on Friday, August 28th, with a 1ft swell from the SSW, but the period is a very long 19 seconds, producing strong energy. The wind is light and cross-off. This is a classic groundswell setup. The waves will have a lot of energy and long lulls between sets, making it easier to get out back. Because it's a point break, that long period will wrap in nicely.
The water temperature is a very unusual 69°F, which is 6°F above the norm for this time of year. That's a warm one for a late August paddle.
From Saturday the 29th through to the end of the month, it stays in the 2ft to 2ft range with decent energy and clean conditions. It's consistent, but not a standout.
The first week of September sees the energy drop off a bit, with smaller swells and some periods of cross-shore or rain bringing in less-than-ideal conditions. The surf is there, but it's nothing special.
Overall, the pick of the period is the stretch from Wednesday, August 26th, through to Friday, August 28th, with the 28th offering the longest period and highest energy. The best call is likely the afternoon of the 26th, where the swell is at its peak for that window, the wind is glassy, and the energy is solid. Give it a go.
Rusty.
