The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

First up, we’ve got a rare and special treat. The water is sitting at a toasty 69°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and it’s gonna feel like a bathtub out there.

The overall pattern is all about Rincon - The Cove. It’s a consistent point break that’s fairly exposed to the swell, and it’s looking like the only real game in town. The best of the best is gonna be the first few days. We’re looking at small but clean surf starting Saturday the 5th. Saturday morning has a bit of a cross-on breeze, but by Saturday afternoon the wind switches to a clean cross-off with a light breeze and the waves are a playful 2 ft from the SSW. The real standout is Sunday the 6th. The swell bumps up just a touch to 3 ft from the S, the wind is light and cross-off all afternoon, and the wave energy is moderate (444). That’s the pick of the whole window. The period is a solid 13 seconds, so you’ll get some nice shaped lines wrapping around the point. It’s mellow enough for intermediates, but any surfer will enjoy it. Keep in mind, crowds are possible at this spot.

Monday the 7th holds up nicely too, with similar 3 ft S swell and clean cross-off winds in the afternoon. Tuesday the 8th is still good, but the swell starts to ease a touch. The pattern holds through to about Thursday the 10th, with small clean waves in the 2 ft to 2 ft range, but the energy drops off.

After that, things get pretty flat and ordinary. From Friday the 11th onward, the waves drop below 2 ft and the energy is weak. There’s a long stretch of days with poor surf or barely surfable conditions. The waves pop up a little on the 16th and 18th with small 1 ft to 2 ft swells, but the wind is often cross or cross-on, and the quality is just not there. The second week is a write-off for any decent surfing.

So, bottom line: get it while it’s good. Saturday the 5th afternoon through Tuesday the 8th are your best shots. Sunday the 6th afternoon is the absolute standout. After that, it’s a long gap of flatness until the 18th, but even then, it’s nothing to write home about.

Stay thirsty, and I’ll catch you in the water.

Rusty
