The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Rincon - The Cove is serving up for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the next few days are a tough go. We’ve got tiny swell—barely 0.3m to 0.4m—and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or side-shore, so the surface is messy. The wave energy is in the weak range, like 60 to 84, so there’s no push at all. The water is way warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a nice bonus if you’re just floating, but the surf is poor through Thursday and Friday (August 6-7).
Saturday morning (August 8) is still tiny with cross winds, and afternoons get a little cleaner with a cross-off breeze, but the waves are still flat and weak. This same story—poor mornings, so-so afternoons—rolls right through the middle of next week. The period is long—13 to 19 seconds—so it’s groundswell, but without any size, it’s just not wrapping in. At a point break like The Cove, that long period usually means glassy lines, but you need a bit of height for it to work.
Here’s the one bright spot: Saturday, August 15 morning. We finally get a bump to about 0.6m from the SSW, with a 16-second period, and the wind goes cross-off from the SW at 10 km/h. That’s clean. The combined energy hits 194 (moderate). It’s still small, but it’s the cleanest wave in this whole run. The afternoon of the 15th gets a bit bigger—0.7m—but the wind cranks up to 20 km/h, so it gets bumpy. Stick to the morning of the 15th.
After that, Monday August 17 through Wednesday August 20 stays small and mostly cross-windy. A few afternoons clean up, but the swell never tops 0.5m. Nothing to get excited about.
The takeaway: Rincon - The Cove is in a flat spell. The first week is a wash for surfing. The only day that’s worth your time is Saturday, August 15 morning—clean, cross-off wind, and a little bit of long-period groundswell. Bring your longboard or a fish and don’t expect much power. Crowds are possible here, so you won’t be alone.
