The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Rincon - The Cove, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The water is sitting at a warm 66°, which is considerably warmer than you’d expect for this time of year – feels like summer has already arrived.
The overall pattern for the next couple of weeks is pretty mellow through the first week. Swell is small and the wind is mostly cross or cross-off, which is okay but not lighting up the point. The energy is weak, with the combined swell energy mostly in the low hundreds, like 157, nothing to get excited about.
Things start to become more interesting heading into the second week. The standout period is really the final weekend of July and that first week of August. Sunday the 25th and Monday the 27th are looking like the pick of the bunch. On Sunday afternoon, the 25th, we’ve got a clean 3 ft of SSW swell with a gentle cross-off breeze, and the energy is ramping up to 471. Then Monday the 27th, both morning and afternoon, are rated as good. The morning shows a 2 ft SW groundswell at 18 seconds, with light cross-off winds and clean conditions (energy 407). The afternoon is even better, with 2 ft of SW groundswell at 19 seconds and the same clean, light wind, with energy jumping to 463. That long period stuff will be lining up nicely at the point. These are the times to be in the water.
One thing to keep in mind: Rincon is fairly exposed to the swell, so it can handle these smaller pulses well. The early part of the outlook, from the 16th to the 24th, is mostly considered poor or very ordinary. There’s a gap of about a week where the surf is just not worth paddling out for. From the 25th onward, it gets more promising. After Monday the 27th, things stay consistent through the 28th, with a 3 ft SSW swell and clean conditions in the morning, but the wind turns a little more cross, so it’s still surfable.
The last few days of the month, from the 29th through the 31st, drop off again into the poor category, so don’t plan on a late-month session unless you’re desperate.
Rusty.
