The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Port Hueneme Beach Park over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it's a tough stretch. The surf is looking pretty small and messy for most of the period. There's a bit of swell in the water, but the wind is just not playing ball. For the first week, from Tuesday the 21st through to the end of July, we're looking at mainly onshore winds and tiny, weak waves. The combined energy is mostly in the low hundreds (244 to 464), which is just weak, and the swell heights are mostly 2ft from the SSW. It's a beach and jetty setup, so with the wind coming onshore, it's just gonna be bumpy and a bit of a chore. You might see a few more marginal windows on the 27th and 28th, but don't get your hopes up. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

The first real glimmer of something halfway decent pops up on the morning of Thursday, July 24th. We get a super long period swell of 24 seconds from the SSW. That's a proper groundswell, but it's tiny at 1ft. The energy is moderate (283), and the wind is a light onshore breeze, so it's still not clean. A long period like that on a beach break can be a bit shifty and close out, but it's the best-looking window in the first week. For a small wave, knowledgeable surfer, it might just be worth a paddle.

The second week from the 25th onward is more of the same. A few days in early August, the 1st through the 5th, the swell drops right off. It's 1ft to 3ft, mostly from the west, with periods dropping to 5 to 7 seconds. The energy is in the double digits (11 to 191), which is weak. The winds are still either onshore or cross-onshore. It's a real flat spell.

It's a tough call, but if I had to pick the best of a bad bunch, it would be that Thursday morning, July 24th. The 24-second period is the only bit of proper energy in the mix, even if it's small. For the rest of it, the conditions are just too poor for a good session. The setup looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle board for most of this run.

Rusty.
