The Lowdown
Right, let me have a look at what's on offer for Silver Strand over the next couple of weeks, mate.
Honestly, it’s looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long, dry spell of poor surf conditions stretching from Saturday the 18th of July right through to the end of the month. The only real glimmer of hope comes way down the line, at the end of the month and into early August, but even that is marginal at best.
Starting off, from Saturday the 18th through to Friday the 24th of July, we’ve got tiny, weak swell. We're talking 1 ft to 2 ft from the SW and SSW, with periods swinging around. The wind is a constant issue, being onshore or cross-onshore from the W or SW at 6-9 mph, just chopping everything up. The combined swell energy is in the weak range (most readings under 200), so there is just no push. It’s a total write-off for the whole first week. They aren't even worth a paddle out.
Now, moving into the second week, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th see a little more energy in the water, with swell bumping up to 3 ft from the SSW, and the combined energy finally hitting the moderate zone (492 and 742). But the wind is still onshore, straight out of the W at 9-12 mph, so it will be bumpy and messy. Not what you want.
The only thing that even gets a one-out-of-ten score is on the 28th and 29th of July. The swell holds around 3 ft from the SSW, and the combined energy stays in the moderate zone (354 to 546). The wind is lighter, mostly a light breeze from the WSW at 6 mph, but it is still onshore. The forecast just calls it "marginal." It’s not great, but if you were desperate for a surf, that’s the window to look at. The period is around 16-17 seconds, which is a nice long groundswell, but at a beach break like Silver Strand, that long period can make it bend a bit straight. Still, if the wind eases off, there might be a workable wave.
Then from the 30th into early August, it drops right off again, back to tiny, weak surf. A few days with combined energy under 100.
So, the standout? It’s not a standout, honestly. It's a "least worst" option. If you are a wave-starved surfer, the mornings of the 28th and 29th of July at Silver Strand offer the best chance. You’ve got some waist-to-chest high swell (3 ft) from the SSW, with a decent long period and light onshore winds. But keep expectations low. This setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer for most of this run.
It’s a tough run, but it tends not to stay this poor forever. Forecasts can change.
