The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break this down in feet and miles per hour for those who think in those numbers.
Look, I’ll level with you – it’s a tough forecast for Silver Strand. The next week and a half is basically a write-off. The swell and wind just don’t want to get along.
Starting on Wednesday the 15th of July, we’re looking at a 1ft swell from the SW with a long period of 18 seconds, but the cross-on wind at 6 mph and combined energy of 92 means the surf is poor. The water temp is running about 66°, a touch warmer than average.
Thursday the 16th gives us a little bump to 3ft from the W with a 9 second period, but it’s onshore wind at 3 mph – still no good. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday… it’s all the same. Even when the combined energy gets up there, like 284 on Tuesday the 21st, the onshore wind kills it.
We finally get a bit of a pulse on Sunday the 26th of July. The morning shows 3ft from the SSW, a 12 second period, and combined energy hitting 344. The wind is cross-on from the WSW at 6 mph, so it’s not glassy, but it’s the first time we see “marginal” conditions instead of “poor.” Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th mornings also show up as marginal, with similar 2ft to 2ft SSW swell.
There’s no true standout in this forecast. If you are aching for a paddle, the morning of Sunday the 26th of July is your best bet purely because the energy is highest and it’s not rated as outright poor. But don’t expect much – it’s a long gap of nothing until then, and then it’s just barely surfable. Crowds might show up if the word gets out, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
The end of the month fizzles back out to small, weak swell and onshore winds. A long dry spell for this stretch of coast.
Rusty.
