Morro Rock Surf Guide

Morro Rock in San Luis Obispo is a fairly exposed beach break that has dependable surf. Autumn and winter are the optimum times of year for waves. Works best in offshore winds from the east. Tends to receive distant groundswells and the ideal swell angle is from the northwest. The beach break provides left and right handers. Good surf at all stages of the tide. When the surf is up, it can get quite busy in the water. Take care of rips and sharks.

“Surfed Morro for years, great rights and lefts. On bigger days stay clear of the lineups which are crowded. There are competent surfers along the spot, Morro can hold a crowded lineup. 40 yards right of the rock is good to start, further left about 60 yards is another takeoff usually crowded with shorter thruster boards. Big, cold water, sharks in the area, use discretion out there...dont surf alone stay within 20 feet of other surfers. Birds flying around a specific spot circling indicate a feeding so beware.”
