The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk turkey. It’s Rusty, and I’ve been scoping out the local stretch for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, it’s been a frustrating one to watch. Most of the charts are showing a whole lot of nothing special—small waves, funky winds, and low energy. We got a couple of moments that might get your heart rate up, but you gotta know when to pick your battles.

Right now, the surf is pretty pathetic. We’re looking at waves in the 1 to 2-foot range with light but mostly onshore winds. The energy is dead, readings are just over 200. It's not gonna be worth the effort. This pattern holds through Saturday the 8th. You might see a little bump, but the wind is all wrong and it’s going to be a mess.

Then, on Sunday the 9th, we see the swell jump up to a solid 6-foot, but it’s a short-period, wind-driven swell. The energy is strong, over 1100, but the period is a weak 10 seconds. It’s going to be a jumbled, choppy mess with a strong cross-onshore wind. The crowds won’t be an issue because nobody in their right mind will be out there. It’s raw power, but zero finesse. Not what you want for a clean session.

After that, it drops right back down. From Monday the 10th to Wednesday the 12th, we're back to small, weak surf with short, choppy periods. The energy levels are weak, and the swell is just not together. A lot of bump and mush.

Finally, we get our one clear highlight: Thursday, August 13th. The swell drops to a modest 2 feet, but the period is a beautiful 16 seconds. This is proper groundswell, coming from the SW, which is the magic direction for the River Mouth. The winds are light and offshore in the morning, leaving the ocean glassy with clean, peeling lines. The energy is still on the low side, but when it’s clean like this, the quality is off the charts. This is the day to dust off the longboard and enjoy some easy, beautiful waves. This is the standout of the entire forecast.

Friday the 14th is similar, but the wind gets a bit more confused and the swell drops slightly. There will be some rideable waves, but the cleanest conditions will be gone.

The second week is basically a repeat of the first, but without the upswing. We’re looking at small 2 to 3-foot swells from the SW, but the winds are always threatening to turn onshore. Some mornings will be clean, but there’s no period over 15 seconds and not enough energy to make anything truly special. It's a grind.

To sum it up, there’s one real day to get excited about—that Thursday the 13th. It's an old-school, clean, small-wave day for a river mouth. If you can’t make that, you’re better off waiting for the next weather system to shake things up. It’s been a quiet run, but it won’t stay like this forever.

Keep an eye on the charts and be ready to move when it lights up.

- Rusty.
