The Lowdown

Alright folks, it's Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this is one of those outlooks where patience is the name of the game. We’re looking at a long dry spell before anything worthwhile shows up.

For Bantham, the first ten days are basically a write-off. From Sunday the 16th right through to Wednesday the 27th of August, we’ve got next to nothing. Tiny dribbles of swell, mostly under 3 feet, and the wind is just horrible – cross-on, onshore, and fresh. You’ll be staring at choppy, lumpy, poor surf conditions. There is a brief moment on Friday the 21st afternoon where it goes glassy, but with only 1 foot of swell, it’s barely a ripple. The combined wave energy is feeble, reading 28 (weak energy). You’d be better off checking the kite setup if you’re desperate.

Then, on Friday the 28th of August, things finally get interesting. We see a real pulse of energy arrive. The morning brings a 4-foot swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, and by the afternoon it jumps to 6 feet from the W with a 9-second period. The combined energy hits a solid 314 in the morning and 745 in the afternoon (moderate to strong wave energy). This is the standout of the entire 16-day window. It’s a bit too big for beginners, but for everyone else, it’s game on. The only catch? The wind is onshore from the SW, so it’s going to be a bit bumpy. But when you’ve been waiting that long, a little chop is a small price to pay for some actual waves.

Given the length of the flat spell, I’d be marking that Friday the 28th in your calendar now. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only proper surf we’re going to see.

Rusty.
