The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Jacks Hole over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it's looking pretty grim for a paddle. This is a real desert stretch, with hardly anything to get excited about. We're talking a long, dry run of flatness and poor conditions stretching all the way through the end of August and into the first week of September. There's nothing to recommend as a standout session; the scores are all bottom-of-the-barrel stuff. The water temp is sitting at a toasty 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won't be feeling it much on a flat day.
The only time we see any kind of pulse is late on Thursday, the 27th of August, when a southerly swell pushes in. The combined energy hits 272, which is moderate, with a 6 ft swell. But that's about where the good news ends. That swell is short period, just 6 seconds, and it's coming in with a fresh cross-shore breeze from the south at 19 mph. It's gonna be lumpy, choppy, and tough to manage. For the experienced crew, there might be some big, unruly lines, but honestly, with that wind, it's more of a kitesurfing setup than a clean paddle session. It's definitely too big for beginners at 6 ft.
After that brief spike, we're back to near-flat conditions with tiny, weak swells and a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. There's a brief window of clean, offshore wind on the 28th and 29th of August, but the swell drops to nothing – 0.7 ft to 2 ft – so there's just no energy to work with. The rest of the forecast is a snooze-fest of tiny waves and poor wind. If you're hanging out for a wave, keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, I'd say give the board a rest and find something else to do. Rusty out.
