The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m looking at the forecast for Jacks Hole, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s a bleak stretch ahead. This is a reef break, advanced only, and it’s fairly consistent, but the next 16 days are pretty much a write-off for any kind of decent surf. We’re looking at a long gap with practically nothing on offer.
Starting now, through the end of July and into early August, it’s all tiny, weak, and messy. The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s something, but it won’t help the waves.
The first real blip of interest doesn’t show up until Friday, July 31st. The morning has a tiny 3 ft swell from the southeast, with a period of just 5 seconds—that’s short period, weak, windswell stuff. The combined energy is only 52, so it’s weak. But the wind is glassy, dead calm. That’s a major positive because it’ll be clean as a whistle. Still, the swell is so small and weak, it’s barely worth paddling out for. The afternoon stays glassy with 2 ft from the northeast, but again, period is short and energy is low (37). If you’re desperate for a lake-like session, this is the only window.
After that, Saturday, August 1st, drops back to tiny, weak, and cross-shore or cross-onshore breezes. Nothing to get excited about.
Honestly, this is one of those stretches where the reef just isn’t working. The swell is too small, the periods are too short, and the energy is barely there. For a spot that needs a decent south swell and some offshore wind, it’s a total dud. If you’re a kite surfer, the better breezes and cleaner conditions later in the second week might be more interesting, but for paddle surfing? There’s nothing here.
