The Lowdown
Alright, check it out. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve stared at the charts for the next stretch so you don’t have to. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: this is a quiet spell for our stretch of coast. The ocean’s basically taking a nap. We’ve got a solid two-week window where you’re not gonna find anything worth paddling out for, unless you just want to sit on your board and stare at the horizon.
The key spot we’re watching, Jacks Hole, is a proper reef setup that needs a specific south swell to wake up. Over the next four or five days, we’re looking at tiny, weak surf. Swell heights are hovering around the 0.3ft mark, and the energy is just pathetic – we’re talking readings in the single digits. It’s not breaking, and when it’s not breaking, Jacks is just a rocky outcrop. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in around 64°F, so it’s not a reason to stay home, but the surf sure is.
There’s a glimmer of something around the 25th, where the swell bumps up to a mighty 2ft. The period is short and crumbly, only 4-5 seconds, so it’s not going to have any push. The wind is cross-shore and onshore, so it’ll be a choppy mess. I wouldn’t get excited. After that it’s right back to nothing. A couple of mornings late in the month and into September look clean with offshore winds, which is always nice to see, but there’s simply no swell to go with it. It’s like having a perfect glassy lineup with no waves.
Around September 4th, there’s a slight pulse of energy, getting up to 3ft. We see the combined energy jump, which is still pretty weak, but it’s the best we get. However, that first day has a fresh cross-offshore breeze, and by the afternoon it’s cranking at 25 mph from the west-southwest. That’s strong offshore wind – it’ll be clean but blown-out, and a real battle to paddle into. That might be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, to be honest.
After that, it fades back to nothing, with the period stretching way out to 13-18 seconds, but the swell height dropping to 0.3ft. A long-period swell with no height is just a rumor. High winds kick up again around the 6th, with a near gale from the south making things properly messy.
So, bottom line: the next 16 days are a bust for any meaningful surf at Jacks Hole. There’s nothing big on the horizon, and the only day that offers anything at all looks too wind-blown to be any fun. This is one of those stretches where you gotta find something else to do. It’s a dry spell, but it won’t last forever. The ocean always wakes back up.
Stay salty.
