The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down for Jacks Hole over the next couple of weeks. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – it’s a real bummer of a forecast. The whole stretch is full of flat, weak conditions, and nothing is coming together to give us a proper session. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least the dip won’t be a shock.
The first recommendation doesn’t show up at all. The entire 16-day window is a total write-off, with every single slot marked as poor surf. There are no standout days, no quality windows, nothing worth paddling out for. The swell energy is weak throughout, with most readings below 100 (e.g. 5, 49, 5, 7), and the few times the swell height gets near 3 ft, like on the 25th of August afternoon with a 4 ft easterly swell, the period is a short 5 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore. That’s just messy, choppy slop. For a reef break that’s fairly exposed to a southerly swell, the optimum direction is from the south, but the swells are just too small and weak to do anything with.
Between the 19th and 24th of August, it’s a flat spell with barely a ripple. From the 25th to the 30th, there’s a slight uptick in energy, but still nothing rideable. The 31st of August through to the 3rd of September is back to tiny, clean but gutless. The strongest wind we see is a 25 mph southerly on the 3rd of September afternoon, which just brings a strong cross-shore chop.
The only glimmer, if you can call it that, is the 28th of August afternoon – glassy conditions with a south swell of 0.7 ft, period 6 seconds. That’s flat calm, but it’s also flat surf. For a more advanced reef break like Jacks Hole, you need something with a bit of push. This just isn’t it.
Honestly, lads, this is a classic dead spell for the area. A few breaks are fairly consistent here, so it won’t stay this way forever, but for now, the best advice is to leave the board in the car and go for a swim. The water’s warm, but the waves are not.
Rusty.
