The Lowdown
Hey, it’s Rusty. Lookin’ at this 16-day stretch for Jacks Hole, I gotta level with you—it’s a grind. Don’t get stoked too early. Most of it is flat or nearly flat, with a long stretch of nothing worthwhile. The first couple weeks are tiny, weak swells and windy, messy conditions. Swell energy’s mostly between 4 and 71 (weak to moderate), with heaps of days at just 0.3ft to 2ft. Wind’s cross or onshore most times, so it’s choppy. Late in the run, there’s a little tease.
The one real highlight? Saturday morning, August 5th. After weeks of flatness and zero surf, we finally see a 4ft SSE swell with a 5-second period, and it’s glassy. Combined energy’s at 83 (moderate). That’s the standout, and pretty much the only one. It’s clean and small, but that short period and southerly direction might make the reef a bit tricky. Still, if you’re itching to get wet, that’s your time—think longboard or funboard. Before that, from August 21st right through September 4th, it’s a brutal dry spell: tiny waves, poor conditions, and scores that are basically zero. It’s a tough slog.
For Jacks Hole itself, it’s a reef break for advanced surfers, and crowds can show up sometimes. That glassy morning on the 5th is clean, but the swell’s small—exposed to the south, so it’s one for the locals who know the spot. Given the lack of size and some longer period swells (16 seconds) earlier that just didn’t deliver, this reef is your best bet.
Bottom line: Save your energy for early September. The rest is a washout. Water temp’s about average for this time of year—nothing special. This kind of blank run is pretty normal for the area in this season. Rusty out.
