The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about Jacks Hole – and I mean real. Over the next 16 days, there’s not a single session I’d recommend. Every forecast window comes up with a big fat zero on the quality scale, and the comments say it all: “poor surf conditions” from start to finish.
The water’s sitting at 62° – about 3° warmer than normal for this time of year, so no wetsuit issues if you’re just floating around. But floating is about all you’ll be doing. Tuesday the 14th kicks off with a tiny 2ft NE windswell, cross‑onshore NNE breeze at 12 mph, and combined energy a measly 30 – weak and choppy. The next few days barely improve: Wednesday the 15th offers 2ft, same cross‑onshore annoyance; Thursday the 16th drops to 1ft then a weird 0.3ft S groundswell with a long 14‑second period but total energy only 10 – clean maybe, but too small to bother. Friday and Saturday stay in the 1–2ft range, always cross‑shore or cross‑onshore winds, and energy barely cracking 15.
Sunday the 19th sees a flat morning (zero energy) and only a whisper of S swell later – 0.3ft at 19 seconds, energy 11 – again, not rideable. The whole second week is more of the same: Monday 20th has a brief moment of clean cross‑offshore winds with 1.0ft NE windswell, but energy a pathetic 2. Not worth the paddle. Tuesday 21st through Thursday 23rd see tiny 1–3ft NE windswells – the biggest of the whole period is 3ft on Thursday 23rd, with energy 39 – still only gentle cross‑onshore chop. Friday 24th has a 19 mph NNW cross‑offshore but only 0.3ft S swell – clean but microscopic. The final weekend (25th–26th) offers clean cross‑offshore winds but again only 0.3–1ft of S or SSE swell. Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th are clean but tiny. Wednesday 29th bumps up to 3ft NE with moderate cross‑offshore wind and energy 49 – the best of a bad bunch, but still poor surf, small and weak.
This reef break is fairly consistent by nature, and it’s advanced‑only anyway, but when the swell doesn’t show and the wind is always cross or onshore, there’s simply nothing to get excited about. Jacks Hole needs a proper S groundswell to fire – we get a few hints of long‑period S energy but it’s too small to use. A blank run like this, while frustrating, isn’t unusual for the area during a quiet winter pattern. Hang in there – forecasts can change, but right now, stay home or find a lake.
Rusty.
