The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Jacks Hole over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, I’ve gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak run coming up. There’s not a single good surf option in this whole 16-day window. The forecast keeps throwing “poor surf conditions” at us, and the scores are all flat. It’s one of those stretches where the ocean just isn’t playing ball.
We start off on Tuesday 14 July with a tiny 2ft of swell from the NE, but it’s got a short, weak period of 5 seconds and the wind is a cross-on from the NNE at 12 mph. The combined energy is a measly 30 – really weak. It’s choppy and messy. That theme carries right through the week. Wednesday 15 July is even smaller, with 2ft and cross-on wind again. Thursday 16 July drops to a pathetic 0.3ft, though the period jumps to 14 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell, but there’s no height to work with. The energy is down to single digits.
The pattern doesn’t let up. We’re looking at days of 1ft to 2ft, with cross or cross-on winds, and the energy values are mostly below 25. Even when we get a bit of glassy conditions on Tuesday 28 July, there’s literally zero swell – the combined energy is 0. That’s a flat day, plain and simple.
The only glimmer of something slightly bigger comes right at the end of the first week, from Thursday 23 July into Friday 24 July. The swell bumps up to 3ft to 4ft from the NE, with a period of 5-6 seconds. The energy climbs to 48 and then 93, which is still weak-to-moderate at best. The winds are light cross-on or even onshore/offshore, so it’s the cleanest we’ll see, but the waves are still described as poor. For a spot like Jacks Hole, a reef break that’s fairly exposed to the south, this short-period NE swell isn’t going to wrap in well. It’s just not worth the paddle.
After that, it fades back to tiny, inconsistent dribble for the rest of the second week. All the way through to Wednesday 29 July, we’re looking at 0.3ft to 1ft with poor conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only positive – and it’s a small one.
So, what’s the takeaway? There are no standout days. Not one. The best on offer, if you’re desperate, might be those two sessions on the 23rd and 24th of July, with the slightly bigger swell and light winds, but even then, it’s not good. A blank run like this is pretty normal for the area when the swell direction and wind don’t line up. Things can change, but for now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
