The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the outlook for Jacks Hole. I gotta be straight with you – the charts are showing a long, flat spell. There’s basically nothing to get excited about for the next two weeks, and that’s a tough one.
For the first few days, from the 17th right through to the 24th, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. We’re talking about tiny, almost non-existent swell with a combined wave energy of just 6 to 7, which is basically flat. The water temp is sitting at 64.6°, which is 3.8° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s notably warm, so at least a dip in the ocean will feel nice, but you won’t be catching anything.
The wind is mostly offshore or cross-shore, which would be great if there was any swell, but there isn’t. It’s a cruel tease. We get a little bump of energy on Thursday the 20th – a 3ft NNE swell, but it’s a short-period windswell at only 5 seconds, and it’s mixed with a cross-shore wind. The combined energy only hits 39, so it’s not going to produce anything rideable. The rest of the first week is just a desert of 0.3ft waves.
The second week doesn’t offer much hope either. Between the 25th and the 31st, we see a few micro pulses. The most notable is on the afternoon of Thursday the 27th, when a 4.6ft SE swell rolls in, with a combined energy of 109 – that’s the highest we see all period. But the period is only 5 seconds, and it’s coming straight onshore. That’s got “mushy, blown-out mess” written all over it. It’s more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, to be honest.
Even into the first of September, it’s the same story. Tiny 0.3ft to 0.7ft waves with a combined energy of 3 to 7. The wind is often offshore, but without any swell, it’s just a flat, glassy lake.
So, to sum it up: there are no standouts here. Nothing. The forecast is a long, hard 16-day stretch of flatness. For a spot like Jacks Hole that’s fairly consistent, this is a real bummer, but it happens. You can’t force the ocean. The only positive is that it tends not to stay this poor for long, so keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath for this window.
