The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a flat spell, and a long one at that. Jacks Hole is the only spot in the mix, and the forecast is a tough pill to swallow. We’re staring down a massive gap of no real surf. The first few days are a write-off, and the pattern doesn't really change. From Sunday the 19th right through to Monday the 3rd of August, the energy is just not there. We see a few tiny pulses, but nothing that would even wet the rails of a log. The combined energy of all swells directed here is barely registering, often hitting single-digit values like 4 or 0, and occasionally touching a weak 10 or 12 (moderate wave energy). It’s basically a desert out there.
The only faint glimmer comes on the morning of Friday the 24th of July. That morning, we get a glassy calm (0 mph wind) and a tiny 0.3 ft swell from the south with a nice, long 13-second period. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But with a combined energy of just 3 (weak wave energy), it’s barely a ripple. It’s so small and inconsistent that it’s more of a mirage than a wave. The rest of the time is plagued by poor surf conditions, mostly cross-onshore winds and choppy water, or just flat calm. The 25th and 26th of July show some clean offshore winds, but with zero swell height, it’s just a clean lake.
So, the bottom line? There is no standout. There is no best day. The forecast is a total blank. For a reef break that’s already only for advanced surfers, needing a swell from the south, this is a pretty normal dry run for the area. Sometimes the ocean just takes a nap. We’ll see if the forecasts change, but for now, leave the boards in the car and bring a towel for the beach.
Rusty.
