The Lowdown
Alright, gents, Rusty here. Let’s not sugarcoat it – this outlook is a lean one.
We’ve got a 16-day window starting now, and the first surf recommendation doesn’t show up until the 19th of July. Even then, it’s a real struggle. There’s a gap of over a week with nothing worth paddling out for, and the run continues to be poor right through to the 28th of July.
The only break on the cards is Jacks Hole. It’s a reef break, advanced, and fairly consistent. It’s exposed to the south, and the optimum swell direction is south. Problem is, the swell is tiny and coming from the wrong direction. The combined energy is weak, barely hitting double digits (4 to 12) for the first week, so there’s no power behind the waves.
No water temp data here, but it doesn’t matter. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or cross, the swell is under 2 feet, and the period is short, under 8 seconds. The 22nd of July morning shows a clean window with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW, but the swell is still only 2 feet from the north. Clean, but not worth the effort.
The 28th of July morning is the best we get. A 3-foot swell from the NNE, with a 5-second period, and light offshore wind from the west. The combined energy hits 46 – still weak, but the best in the whole run. The waves will be clean, but it’s short-period, so it’ll be a bit slow and lumpy.
After that, it’s flat or near-flat through to the 3rd of August. The 1st of August morning has a 2-foot swell from the north, with a moderate cross-offshore breeze, so it’ll be clean. Still tiny.
For kite surfers, the wind on the 26th of July is a fresh offshore at 30 km/h, and the 2nd of August afternoon has a fresh offshore at 30 km/h with rain showers. That’s your best bet. For the rest of us, it’s a time to clean the wax off the boards.
Rusty.
